A tartan is never just cloth. Behind every weave is a story of place, family, allegiance or aspiration. For centuries, tartans have served as badges of clan identity in Scotland, markers of regional pride across both Scotland and Ireland, and symbols of heritage that travelled wherever Scots and Irish diaspora settled—from North America to Australia, from Argentina to South Africa. They evolved from practical distinctions to romantic emblems to contemporary expressions of ancestry and pride.
The history is complex. Many of the tartans we think of as ancient were actually codified or invented in the 19th century, during a period of cultural revival and romantic nationalism. Some are documented back centuries; others are modern creations inspired by family names, places or traditions that matter to people today. That doesn't diminish them—it shows how living traditions actually work. Tartans continue to be created and claimed because they still serve the same purpose: they connect us to something larger than ourselves.
For people with Scottish or Irish heritage, a tartan can be deeply personal. It might represent your family name, your clan affiliation, the region your ancestors came from, or simply a visual anchor to an identity you're exploring or reclaiming. For others, a tartan is purely aesthetic—a love of classic woven patterns and textile design. Both matter. Both are valid.
What fascinates me is how scattered these stories are. Thousands of tartans exist across different registers, books, archives and websites, many of them difficult to find or poorly documented. Some are almost forgotten. Others are actively being researched and reclaimed by families and communities. Over time, my personal obsession with collecting and cataloguing them has become something closer to a preservation project—an attempt to document as many tartans as possible and make them easier for people researching their own surnames, their own heritage or simply their own aesthetic to discover.
