there was a big play of emotions that trin hadn’t been prepared for as she stood in front of claudio. a smiling , enthusiastic and happy claudio. she had to blink away her shock. had he hit his head? did he suffer from some kind of amnesia that she hadn’t heard about? it was only so long ago when he had told her that he had never wanted to speak to her again. she could recount that day clearly … it was one of the worst days of her existence. a complete break and lost of a friendship over a camera with too much sentiment and a grip that was uncaring. though still to this day , if you’d ask her , a camera wasn’t worth breaking an entire friendship over. especially a friendship like the one that they had.
it was entirely way too odd at first. in a lot of ways , perhaps in more ways than she had realized , they were attached at the hip. any moment they had to be together , they took advantage of. even if it was just for a few minutes for walking and talking between classes , claudio had become a big part of her high school career. there was a brief struggle in trying to adjust to the loneliness. if it weren’t for her fellow cheerleaders , she really wouldn’t have had anyone. her need to study having taken a hit at her social life. a hit she hadn’t realized until after claudio left.
but then he had gone ahead and used their photo for some free food. at least she had the decency to use a photo of her and an ex , he had used them. but , really , it wasn’t the stupid photo or food , it was the clear indication that they were really and truly over that had stumped her. and then , of course , it was his snarky attitude and comments. he was lucky all she had done was knock hot wings onto his lap. she had been so angry at the time , she probably would’ve thrown the water at his face too.
well , at least she had gotten the last word in that altercation. ‘ happy fuckin’ valentines day ‘ she believed.
“ oh uh , no yeah. it’s really good to see you too! this is a real surprise. “ she finally answered , eyes momentarily staying on her wallet as she ‘ fished out ‘ her debit card. but she forced herself to look up at him. it really was really good to see him again. but she just couldn’t shake off that confusion. “ i haven’t been up to too much. just college … i’m majorin’ in dance so , it’s a lot of practicin’ and stayin’ on my toes. …. i’m just here for summer vacation. “
“ how about yourself? “ fingers curled around her card , a fight between wanting to shove this in his face so she could leave and wanting to prolong this as much as she could so she could speak to her best friend again.
He smiled as best he could when it came up to discussing the big “C” word. He was a good kid in high school, always walking in pace but almost one step behind when it came to Naomi and her studies. It was nothing he was ever jealous of, he didn’t get every single A but he had a good thing going. “I’m taking online classes, with some University in South Dakota...” Claudio’s shoulders dropped when he took Trinity’s card. “I didn’t get into the college I wanted...” senior year was hard, he felt that he had lost a big ambition in his life, he failed some classes, he was close to not even graduating. “..so i just considered joining the army, or taking the year off to travel but you can see how all that stuff started working out..” he was working full time now and was a student for the rest of it.
He was happier now than he was the same time last year, but even saying it he was embarassed for himself. Granted since he’s started back again he’s been doing so great. “Once it all works out for me i’ll transfer. Work on some sort of filming major, and a minor in business, maybe another one in language..” though that was about as far as he had gotten he wasn’t that good with making plans seeing how all the other ones turned out.
When the purchase went through he blinked at the total, realizing that he was just one step closer to maybe never seeing her again. there was a fear that he would be stuck back in the cycle he was desperately trying to get out of. “Your total is 6.43.” he spoke quietly passing back her debit card with two hands. He didn’t know how long he could make this small talk even with his colleague taking the next register over. Still right behind Trinity was an older woman; her face stern as she stared at the two of them. She could wait a little longer, the earful he would get afterwards would be worth it.
