one thing i find really exciting is that we’re among the first generation of women who never marry or have children, and with that comes a completely new blueprint
in past generations, virtually every woman was relegated to wife (slave) and mother (the most thankless job in the world) by 25
we’re going to be the first generation of women who can genuinely dedicate our lives to hobbies, travel, intellectual pursuits, meaningful careers, skill building, cultural immersion, fitness, volunteering and female friendships
it’s beautiful — imagine just how much women will be able to accomplish now that we can live life for ourselves, unburdened by marriage, motherhood and a patriarch in our homes controlling us or exploiting us domestically/sexually/mentally/emotionally
and, of course, we will keep fighting until all our sisters globally are freed
I wake up in the morning to the sun. It's quiet in the house. I get dressed and take the dog outside. I take pictures of insects on the plants I grow. My nana says thank you - she liked insects and taking photographs and gardening.
I pick some dill, some basil, some mint, some sorrel. I eat it outside. It travels only a couple feet from plant to mouth. My mom says thank you because she loved teaching me edible plants.
I have a university education and my great grandmother says thank you. She was the first woman to teach in a university and in the faculty photo, she is called Mrs Lastname and all the men get first names. I use my education to put words together in a way that makes women think and feel. My female ancestors deprived of literacy say thank you.
No man lives in my house and my ancestor Marie says thank you. She came to our land on a boat - she boarded with her husband, but he died on the journey.
I sit on the floor and groom the dog. I take my time as she is old and very good. My sister says thank you - she loves animals.
I write. I read. I learn the indigenous names of native plants. I lift weights and they thank me. I make a tea and they thank me. I go out at night and stop to look at the fireflies, the moon, the milky way. I bring the women with me because they could not walk alone at night, they could not take as long as they wished, they could not imagine the world they made for me and what use I would make of it.
My ancestors know that the lineage ends with me, and they are pleased. This was all they wanted. They did not ask for much. I sing, and they dance their thanks.

Finding and commiserating with and building up solutions with like-minded women is the best way to alleviate suffering in a woman-hating world, and the only way to sustainably resist despair. You are not alone! Get yourself to a feminist gathering, a bookshop, a weekend out in the woods, or even just a phone call if you can't travel!
I go to a women’s college. We have a walkway where bricks can be purchased by alumnae. Most just say names or class years/mascots. But this one. This one is special. It speaks to me.
I truly believe being able to name the world around you is integral to animism. learn the names of plants and flowers. learn how the rocks and soil you walk over daily form. sit with the streams and rivers, learn where they flow to and from. learn the names others have given, and give them your own as well. animism is interconnectedness, and one simple step is learning the names of your neighbors
What kind of relationship do the species in your local forest have with each other? What type of forest is it and what kind of plants like to grow there? Do the plants whose names you're learning like to grow in moist or dry spots? When do they bloom? Is your local forest in its natural state or has it been handled by humans? How can you tell?
My journey in forest mapping has brought up a lot of these questions. It's not just learning the names of plants, it's also learning about their growth environments and what makes them different. Some plants are indicators of a specific forest type. It's learning about the relationships between species; some of them like to grow together. I have to look at the history of the forest and the structural features of it... etc.
It has been very cool to notice how my appreciation for forests has changed. It's nice that I can tell the difference between a really really beautiful and "valuable" forest and less nicer ones. I KNOW why a forest is valuable. It's all of those fallen trees, the trees with holes in them, it's the specific nature types within the forest, the endangered species, the structure... the biodiversity in all these things I mentioned and more. Species mapping has truly been amazing for my practice. It has opened up whole new layers of love for nature beyond just "oh wow what a pretty flower."
Everything in nature acts in such concord. The way animals and insects et al interact with each other is so much more intelligent and deep than we understand unless we are looking very closely.
It's hard to believe we've forgotten how much we mean to the world around us. If you see a bird almost every day, it knows you.

Anyone who believes men are violent because of socialization needs to spend one spring in a garden. Males rape. I think men pulled women from nature so we could not see it. Men pulled women from nature so we wouldn't remember that we are nearer to a female flower fly, a female red winged blackbird, than we are to males. They pulled us from nature because there, we had relationship with everything - and they couldn't stand not being everything.
Starting to suspect the insects and animals are much, much smarter than humans. No other species could or has killed the world.
