Listen Charlotte was not a perfect mother (at least as seen through the eyes of humbert) but she wanted Dolores to go to college and have a career and LIFE. Dolores should have rebelled against her parents by spending her college fund to move to LA. She should have been a drama teacher or journalist or dancer. Who knows, maybe she would have developed an interest in marine biology. She had so much potential, seeing it squandered by predatory men destroys me

Im having emotions of an intensity I haven't felt since puberty while reading Lolita. I hate Humbert in a way well adjusted adults rarely hate anything. I keep getting the urge to write self-insert fanfiction about Lolita where I somehow meet them on vacation and find evidence of Humbert's repeated assaults so I carefully explain to Dolores how she will be safe and protected and i will make sure she finds a caring foster family and after Dolores is settled somewhere secure I track down humbert and hit him with my fucking car. And he is terribly injured but lives only to then get beaten to death in prison. Maybe there's also a chapter where Dolores gets to give her testimony at his trial and tells Humbert directly how disgusting and delusional he is.

Dolores Haze is so clever and funny and just likeable I wish she got a better story than the one Humbert forced her into. I want her to be a teen detective like Nancy Drew or a young actress in a coming of age story. In a kinder world she stays at her summer camp and gets cozy but educational slice of life story about peer pressure and early puberty. I love reading about Dolores I just hate the story she's stuck with.
