“You’re Marie right? Robby’s been talking about you.” (Jack Abbot; @mxrvelouscreations
@mxrvelouscreations
"Um... yep, that's me," Marie said, smiling awkwardly, suddenly caught off guard. She had a hundred things running through her head on a busy afternoon and Abbot had disrupted her train of thought. But someone in her lower ranking position didn't just blow off an attending because they were busy. If they addressed you, you damn well paid attention if you valued your job.
Adjusting some supplies in her arms and trying not to forget where she was about to bring them, her expression changed from awkward to... even more awkward. "He... he has?" she asked. "Well, I... I hope he's been saying good things about me...?" What if he wasn't, though? What if he had complaints about her performance or something? She hated the way her mind always automatically jumped to negativity the first chance it got.
"You're Dr. Abbot, right? Rob— uh... Dr. Robinavitch talks about you a lot, too." Though, the last thing she wanted to do right now was think about his naked yoga while actually standing in front of the man... Oh my god...
❝ Whoa, hey, you okay there? ❞ / Johnny to Jix angst angst angst angst
@etaernum
@etaernum
Jix really should not have tried to climb up to that window. It was just that it was so much faster to climb in through a window than to go all the way around to the doors, but... he was a terrible climber, and the window had been very high up for such a small leafling.
He'd cried out in fear when he'd fallen, and again in pain once he hit the ground, the cracking sound of a tiny branch accompanying it. Usually when he fell, he landed on his pliable roots or his sturdy, trunk-like body. This time, unfortunately for Jix, he'd landed right on his head, and one of his branches had snapped. It wasn't completely broken off, but it was split and dangling at a wrong angle.
"Ohhhhhh oooooowww...!" Jix wailed. "Owowowowow...! Ohhh Jix fell down and broke self! Please send the helps! Somebody!"
Jix sat up, sniffling as he cried, tiny tears trickling down his thin face. He reached up to feel his broken branch. "Oh nooooo! Owww..." he said, righting the branch again and holding it in place. From the break, a clear, green liquid seeped out, Jix's equivalent of blood. When he heard a voice, he looked up, still holding his branch together.
"No-noooo... Jix is not okay!" he cried. "Fell down and broke branch. Feeling all the pains. Can help Jix? Need to make bandage for branch. Can do for Jix? Or help take Jix to friends who can? Please and thank?" More pitiful sniffling followed as he tried to wipe his tears with his free hand.
{i am the caretaker of souls} *flops and dies* Welp. My summer class is over, but it's also really not. Guys, I'm so irritated right now. I wrote out a whole big loooong thing complaining about my class but you know what? That's not right, I shouldn't do that. I really need to vent, but I guess... my venting will go into the ether, heh, because I shouldn't complain about my students. Suffice it to say, I'm exhausted and a little pissed off. I've been working all day and night, for about 17 hours now, and I feel really taken advantage of with regard to my kindness and flexibility as a professor. Very truncated version of my venting below the cut, for those who wish to know.
Obviously, I'm not getting much done here tonight, but I do have two asks I really wanted to get to, so... I'm going to do those and then I desperately need sleep and to rest my eyes. Tomorrow and Friday (8/13-14) I hope to write for my FFXII blog, but it will depend on work and how much time I have. I'll also work on the open muses here (Ardeth, Jix, the Creature, and Marie) between now and next Tues (8/18), as time allows. <3
*sighs and rubs temples* The upshot is... that I feel my time was not at all respected today and will continue to not be in the next two days, and I don't appreciate having to continue to work past the end of my contract (I'll need to until at least 8/31) because students don't care about being responsible or respectful. That's all I'm going to say. It was not a good day, and I've got a lot of work to do now over the next two days despite that my class officially ended 5 hours ago, which is all time I don't get paid for and is really not fair. I also hurt my neck with all the computer time and stress and now I can't turn my head to the left without being in agony, so that's... that's special, I guess. It's fine, everything's fine.
I'll be okay, I just... *sigh* Please, if you're in college or you have friends or siblings who are, just... respect your professors. They're people too. Don't make your poor time management skills or lack of work ethic or improperly organized priorities your professor's problem at the very last minute of class. It is massively uncool to do that and that behavior will not serve you well in future jobs, that's for sure. Not... that I think any of you would behave that way, but I just needed to say that as a PSA, for my own sanity. This was probably the worst run of this class for me in my 11 years of teaching it. -500/10, would not do again.
{i am the caretaker of souls} Alright, that's going to have to be enough for tonight, since it's almost 7AM and I really need to get some sleep. I won't have time to write for all muses again tomorrow night (8/12), but I'll leave Marie, Ardeth, Jix, and the Creature open, though, since they're the loudest right now. Tomorrow I'll try to get caught up on the replies I still owe for those open muses that I didn't have time to get to tonight. Otherwise, I am hoping to write for my FFXII blog on Thurs-Fri (8/13-14) as time allows with work. Goodnight for now! =)

“Michael… are you hurt?” Leigh knelt down beside the other, her hands shaking as she moved to rest them over his armour, “let me help.”
@mxrvelouscreations
Michael had known that his choice to settle down with a human, and to become the father to her prophesied child, would attract unwanted attention from demons and his own kind alike. Demons would seek to harm Leigh as she carried the child, mindful of the prophecy, while angels would be incensed by Michael's love for a human woman and seek to tar them apart. He had known his decision would lead to conflict, but if he could keep as much of that conflict away from Leigh as he could, then he would do anything.
The challenge had come from one of his own kind. Michael hated to kill other angels, especially ones far younger than himself, or ones he knew had been through so much, but he had to defend his love and their child... at any cost. This time, he had emerged victorious, though not unscathed. A small slit in the metal of his chestplate indicated a blade had found its mark, and the warm wetness he felt inside his armor told him it was no minor wound. Thankfully, it had not been near his heart, but his lung was another story, and he was bleeding badly regardless. Archangels healed quickly, and he knew he would be alright eventually, but until then, he was likely to scare Leigh with the sight of the wound.
When he arrived back home, Michael hadn't known what to say to Leigh. The last thing he wanted to do was upset her, especially in her condition, but the way he sat slightly off-kilter, the way his breaths were slow and careful, he knew she could tell something was wrong. "I will be... alright..." he said in a half-pant in response to her question, managing a smile to try to steady her. He didn't want her to see his wound or the blood, but he knew he needed help getting the armor off. It hurt so much to move. "Thank you," he said breathlessly, letting her unfasten the buckles and leather straps of his various pieces of armor.
Once the chestplate was off, blood could be seen soaking all over his shirt. When that too was removed, it could be seen that the culprit was a stab wound to the right side of his chest. "Angels... heal more quickly... than human beings..." he reminded her, seeing her reaction. "I will be alright..." Even so, he lifted a hand to cover the wound, for it was still bleeding.
Michael knew how hard this was for her, but she was doing well, really. Despite her panic, she was trying to stay in the moment and keep as calm as she could. Maybe she wasn't doing the best job of that, but Michael was proud of her for trying so hard. Having her there was helping him to keep calm as well, though... he honestly was not afraid to die, or afraid of the pain. He was far more afraid of leaving Leigh behind and of hurting her with his death. That was why it was not an option.
Once she had helped him get his shirt off and he had enclosed her in his wings for comfort, he reached out to hold her hands in one of his while the other held his wound. It wouldn't be long now, he knew, and if she could just hold on for a few more minutes. "It's okay..." he whispered to her, giving her his voice to focus on. "You're doing so well." He gave her a little smile to help reassure her.
After a few minutes, he took his hand away, wiping the wound to see if it was still bleeding. No new blood seeped from the small slit in his chest. "There. See? The bleeding has stopped. We can clean ourselves up now, and then I need to rest until the wound heals completely. Alright?" he asked, slowly uncurling his wings.
@thenexusofsouls (for Robby, from Marie) sender quietly squeezes receiver's hand during a difficult moment.
Robby knew there would be days like this. Days where he would slip back, where the voices in his head got louder and he would end up pacing back and forth in his own daze. Or at least, that was how it would be normally. This was different. Instead of pacing his hall back and forth and wearing away the flooring, he was curled up in bed with Marie, her hand holding his as he tried to keep himself from getting too worked up.
“I’m sorry… I’m sorry…” he muttered, “I’m sorry.. “
Her eyes welled up a little, seeing and hearing him like this, but she had meant what she said. He was doing well. She knew how hard this road was for him to walk, but he'd chosen to try instead of give up, and that meant the world as far as she saw things. "I know you are. I can see how hard you're trying every day," she said, her admiration for that coming through in her tone. "You can do this. I believe in you, I do. And when it feels like it's getting too hard to manage, then lean on me. As much as you need to. Let me help you shoulder all this. You don't have to do it alone."
Marie held him so protectively and lovingly, keeping up her gentle touches to help ground him as much as possible. She was so happy to feel him calming down and to hear his breathing start to return to normal, but she was in no hurry to let him go. if he needed or wanted her to, she'd hold him all night. "You're welcome... but there's really no need to thank me. I care about you and I want to help," she said softly.
“So you’re the new guy? They didn’t tell me much about you…” (for Luke)
Luke was finally out of bed and not entirely covered in bandages like a mummy anymore, but... it wasn't a great existence. He still had bandages over half his face, his wrists and hands, his chest, his legs... and he was moving really slowly. Everything was stiff and painful and a reminder that he was never going to be the same again.
Ironically, the same experimental medical technology and science that had cruelly kept him alive after the crash had been his ticket off Terminal Island. He could almost laugh at the fact that Weyland Corp. had stolen government technology to keep their star driver in the race. Of course they did. Everything else about Terminal Island was shady as hell, so why not their medical bay too? Honestly, Luke would rather be dead right now, but if he wasn't given that luxury, then at least he was glad he wasn't going to be forced to race anymore, or spend life inside a prison cell.
But did he have to be here, among a bunch of heroes, do-gooders, and generally cheerful extroverts? Luke was an extrovert once, but that had drastically changed once he'd been turned into a monster. With his looks went his pride, his confidence, his humor, and his will to live. So, you guys needed a Toxic Avenger or what? Luke had asked the new billionaire in charge of his life, Tony Stark. Apparently the man loved that movie. It wasn't Luke's taste, and the fact that he now resembled the titular character didn't help matters either.
Seriously, though, why was he here? Because the tech was owned and operated by the same branch of government that managed the Avengers. That and Stark had developed a good portion of it himself. Great, Luke thought cynically to himself. They'll ship me right back to prison once they realize who they've got here. Right now, though... he was going to continue treatments, since the brains behind the whole Avengers Initiative now owned all the associated research involved with his recovery. That meant skin grafts, reconstruction, nerve deadening, pain management, physical therapy, and a slew of other ways he was plunged into hell each day.
He had his own room now that he was ambulatory in the most basic sense. They'd given him a wheelchair, but Luke refused to use it out of wounded pride. Most of the time, unless he was due in the med bay for treatments, Luke kept to his room. He really didn't want to be seen, and he had nothing of value to do, so he focused on just performing basic, everyday functions around his room. Making coffee, making meals, taking showers, putting on and taking off clothes... they all used to be such simple things for him, and now they took forever... and hurt like hell.
The medical staff were doing a number of things to try to manage Luke's pain, but they also gave him medication to take in between treatments if he needed it. The pills sat in a bottle on the side of the sink in his bathroom, unused. Another point of pride he couldn't get past. He'd asked for the mirror to be take out of the bathroom too. He had no reason to look at himself anymore. Standing by the sink and staring at the pills, Luke had gotten lost in his thoughts when he heard a knock at his door. Please don't let it be that guy again, I can't take much more of his shit, he thought of Stark. To his surprise, a young woman stood at the door instead.
"That's 'cause there's not much worth tellin'," Luke said. Who was she and why was she here? Probably to gawk at the freak she'd heard lived next door. "They want me for somethin', or did you just come to look at the mess?" he asked, gesturing at his face. Leaving the door open for her, he turned and started the long journey to his bed, long being just a few paces, but they were painful ones. He sat down very stiffly on the side of the bed, taking a moment to acclimate to the tightness and pain that bending made him feel.
"That's such bullshit..." Luke whispered, for even the act of talking hurt him. Thinking about starving little kids being slapped into a home, and twins being separated, really rubbed him the wrong way. When she used his reaction as evidence that he wasn't a bad person, he shook his head slowly. "I mean if the baseline is not bein' a dick to a couple of starvin' little kids, then okay, I guess so, but... I would've thought that would've been on anybody's list of basic human decency." The world had proven him wrong about a lot, though, lately.
"Really? How sure are you about all that?" he asked. "'Cause I was told I was taken off the Island and put here because my treatments were stolen tech from your guy Stark. I'm bettin' he wanted his intellectual property back, and I was just a part of the experiment." Yet Wanda seemed to believe that they were decent people, the Avengers, so Luke gave the slightest of shrugs, not wanting to feel the pain of a full one. "I guess we'll find out."
Luke looked to her when she said she wouldn't let Stark throw him out. Why did she care so much? He was really curious, but he didn't want to sound ungrateful. "Could you stop him? If he tried? Guy's got money and power for days," he said rather hopelessly. "There was a guy just as rich and powerful on the Island, and he made my life hell. He was the reason I was being experimented on. He was makin' money off me before my accident and he didn't want that to stop. So he had to find ways to keep me alive and workin' for him."
It was really nice of her to help him with the water, and he didn't blame her for how weak and emasculated he felt about it. He was touched by the gesture, even if he felt like the biggest loser in the world not even being able to drink by himself anymore. This was his new normal, and he was just going to have to start getting used to it. Wiping his tears only made more fall, though, because it was such an unexpected act of kindness that Luke didn't really even know how to react. "Thanks," he whispered, though his eyes were still red and welling up.
When she offered a hug, Luke had to think for a second. Was this woman even real? How was anyone this kind to someone like him for no reason? "Yeah..." he whispered. "Just... don't squeeze too hard. It's not just my face and my hands... it's... kindof everywhere..." he said, looking down at his body. The clothes and bandages covered up a lot of horror, he knew.
The soldier bunched herself up under the desk, palms pressed to her ears with enough pressure that she could hear the squeak of her joints. She was trying to block out the noise. The angry shouts as she disobeyed direct orders. When had she entered the office? One minute she'd been searching the aisles...
well,
Shallow breaths
A tap on her shoulder, sending her jolting alongside her racing heart, wide eyes searching for the source- an elderly woman with a light laugh, and an apology for startling her. She was only reaching for the milk
Bright, fluorescent lights
Constant chatter and clanging and beeping that was not, in fact, a heart rate monitor, and was instead the tills as the cashiers scanned various items
Too many options
kind of.
At some point she'd passed the bakery, and a small child in a cart had wheeled by, holding a...
And then she'd found herself in the office. The door was locked from the inside. The desk had the indent of fingers on the edge of it's surface, as though imprinted in wet cement. One of it's legs wiggled like a snake. Both still gleaned with the sweat of her hands.
The manager kept slamming on the door, shouting and raving about calling the police, and company files and trespassing. And yet she was frozen in place. - For Wade, sadiebrin
@sadiebrin
"Donuts or muffins?" Wade muttered to himself as he looked around the bakery section. His head tilted to one side, then the other. "Eh, they each have their good points..."
It was supposed to rain today. Not just rain, thunderstorm. So far, though, the sky had gone dark for a couple hours and it had gotten rather windy, but so far... no rain or thunder. Perfect weather for Wade to do a little shopping during normal human hours without fear of getting too impaired by the sun. He'd felt a mild tingling on his skin when he stepped outside, but... not too bad. And really, he just had to go from his apartment building to his SUV, and then from there into the store. He could do that standing on his head, so... time to shop.
Being a vampire sucked, pun intended. Needing blood all the time was not only unappealing to Wade, but it was massively inconvenient with his schedule and lifestyle. And he refused to give up the foods he loved, even if they did nothing for him nowadays. At least he could eat whatever he wanted without fear of getting fat or developing heart disease, since whatever made him a vampire seemed to regulate his body to keep it in tip-top shape without him having to do much of anything.
His deliberations on exactly what kind of indulgent human food to buy were interrupted by a very distressed woman staggering from near where he was toward the back of the store. Confections could wait. Wade followed her, sensing that something was very wrong. When she went inside an office and slammed the door, Wade stopped and watched as the manager began pounding on the door like a child throwing a tantrum. "Really?" Wade mumbled to himself.
Making his way to the door, Wade laid his hand on the manager's shoulder. "Take a breath, okay? I think she's havin' some kinda problem." The manager was taking too many breaths, as it were, and spouting more boisterous nonsense about how she wasn't allowed in there, and if she didn't come out right this instant he was going to called the cops!
With an irritated smirk, Wade reached into his pocket and pulled out his wallet. "Dude, relax, I am the cops," he said, flashing his badge just fast enough for the manager to see something that looked official but not long enough for him to actually read that it only said government licensed bounty hunter on it. It worked, and the manager took a step back from the door. Only one. Wade looked at him like, you gotta be kiddin' me with this bullshit. "Yeah, you wanna gimme some time here, man? I'll handle it, don't worry." With that, the manager huffed and left to deal with an irate woman who couldn't find the type of cheese she wanted and was making it everyone else's problem.
"Hey... miss?" he called through the door. "You okay in there? Need some help?" He was trying to get through to the woman but also sound as non-threatening as he could manage.
Wade wasn't sure if everything he'd told her abut Mae had upset her confidence in him, or at least her confidence in his own ability to keep secret her location. Still, he'd thought honesty was the best policy, especially with someone as paranoid and who had clearly been through as much as Sadie had. Being honest about a truth that wasn't ideal was far better than being found out to have lied later.
"Wait, they did? Geez, no wonder they were giving off those vibes to me," Wade said with no small amount of disgust. it only solidified in his mind that this woman had been treated really poorly, that she'd had it rough, and he was slowly making it his mission to help her improve her life. Why did he feel this was his responsibility? Guilt over other things he'd done, maybe. Or just plain empathy. Hearing that the people who had abused her had infiltrated the government, Wade shook his head in pointed disappointment. "Great," he said sarcastically. "One more thing to worry about with our far-from-perfect government."
As she thanked him for his resolve on not giving away any information should HYDRA come knocking at his door, he nodded. "No problem. It's a no brainer for me," he said without hesitation. He wouldn't turn over his worst enemy to an organization like that, let alone someone as nice as Sadie. Rockland's mom, no less.
He wished she'd just keep the clothes. They were simple anyway, and he had plenty of money to buy more, but he also wasn't going to push if she wasn't comfortable with doing that. Pride was a thing, he understood. Trust was another. So he got it. "Okay. Whatever you're comfortable with," he said, letting the issue rest. When she said she'd be back in a few minutes, he nodded again. "Sure. Take your time. I'm gonna make some pasta. You're probably hungry, right?"
With Sadie off to shower and change, Wade set about boiling water in the kitchen and got out some fusilli pasta. He carefully put Bee down on a nearby chair seat. "Okay, little girl, I don't want you near the boilin' water, alright? So you stay right here where I can see you."
Bee blinked lazily, sorry that her warm hammock was gone for the moment, but curling up into a little loaf regardless. She watched Wade with sleepy eyes, the very tip of her tail moving this way and that very slowly.
Once he added the pasta to the water and started stirring it and adding a bit of salt, he glanced over at the kitten. "Don't you be smellin' the air like that, this isn't for you," he said, though his tone was light and playful. "Wait, can cats even eat pasta? Or is it like... feedin' pigeons rice and their stomachs get all bloated?" While waiting for the pasta to cook, he whipped out his phone. "Apparently, you can have a little bit of plain, cooked pasta. Looks like you're gonna miss out on sauce. Go.ogle says no sauce for you."
Bee let out a sweet and charming meow, more just idly responding to the fact that she knew Wade was talking to her. She liked the sound of his voice. It was very calming to her.
"Sorry, kid, but I gotta follow the rules. Don't want you gettin' sick," Wade said apologetically.
By the time Sadie called to him from the bathroom, the pasta was cooked and he'd heated up the sauce. "Yeah, you can hang 'em in there for now. I usually shower in the mornings anyway," he called back. After he fed, that is, because sometimes he got a bit messy. It didn't look like he was getting fed tonight, though. That... was a problem he'd deal with later.
"Alright, what do you think?" he said to Bee, taking a single piece of pasta and bringing it over to her, leaving it on the chair seat.
Bee promptly sniffed it, determined it to be tasty, and devoured it.
"So, um..." Carter sniffed, and absentmindedly ran her fingers along her bandaged left forearm. Her gaze was cast downward as she sat cross-legged across from Tony - from her father. A thought that... still didn't feel real, despite the time that had passed since... everything had happened. Something she still wasn't sure how she felt about, and something she was afraid to know how he felt about.
She stifled a sigh and shifted uncomfortably - her shoulders hunched as she leaned over her lap, and still kept rubbing the bandage. "Do... Is it o-okay if I- I stay still? 'Cause, um... A-Agent Hill was saying that- that they don't ne-need mom's house any-anymore for the investi-vestigation, and she- she said SHIELD would help- help me emancipate if- if this... doesn't work."
It was a nice offer, really. That way she didn't have to stay with a father she didn't know, and a father who may not even want to be a father. And... that way she didn't end up in foster care for two years. But the idea terrified her, try as she might not to show it. She didn't want to be emancipated. She didn't want to stay with Tony. She wanted her mother, and--
And that was never going to happen.
Carter shifted her jaw to fight back tears that threatened to well in her eyes, and stared at her arm as she picked at the edge of the bandage. Could it come off yet? Though as her arm itched, she knew that was precisely why she still needed to wear it. "I- I just... y'know, don't wan-want you to feel like you- like you need to take- take me in. I- I have options."
(( @atlasheartd for Carter's hansen au! and I did write a rough about post since I haven't gotten around to writing an official verse page for it sdfghjfds))
@atlasheartd
So this was... a lot. Just. All of it. Everything that had happened. Every ache and pain he now had. His house destroyed. Pepper almost killed. Himself almost killed... a few times. Maya actually killed. His peace of mind... shattered. And in the midst of all of this, he... he was... now a father? Of all the possible things that could have been added to his dance card for the aftermath of all the shit that had gone down, he would've lost bets on every guess he could possibly have made. Never in a hundred years... a thousand... did he expect this.
Confused and surprised didn't even begin to cover it. Blindsided was maybe the word. Why the hell hadn't Maya told him she'd had his kid? Didn't he have a right to at least know about it? He could've helped her out, helped the kid out, been there for them both! He would've—
...annoyed the piss out of them. Screwed everything up. Made things worse than they would've been with his plethora of good intentions sabotaged by bad habits and a neurotic brain that ran about as smoothly as a three-legged hamster on a squeaky, unbalanced wheel.
He would've failed them.
No wonder Maya never told me. I wouldn't have told me either.
He wasn't the kindof guy you tell, wasn't the sort of guy any woman wanted in his life. Even Pepper was dangling by a thread at this point and he was sure that recent events hadn't helped matters at all. He also wasn't the kind of guy you wanted around your kids. He was a train wreck of a person. A dumpster fire burning during a goat rodeo. It hurt, badly, but he understood.
And now he'd never have the opportunity to even talk to Maya about it.
All he could do now was try, in the completely clueless way he knew he was about to attempt it, to do right by his daughter. That still sounded weird to him. But in all the chaos and upheaval of his life in recent days, Tony was perhaps solidly certain about only one thing... that he was not going to turn his back on his own kid.
As she spoke, he noted the hesitation and uncertainty. Was that because of him? Or just everything? His anxiety told him it was him, that whatever was wrong, it was his fault. Did she blame him for her mother's death? Probably.
She could be emancipated if this didn't work out. His brain took a moment to catch up. If this... didn't work out... Wait, what?
"No, I— uh..." he blurted out before his brain had actually... lined up any words. He cleared his throat awkwardly. "Listen, you... you're free to do whatever you want. If you don't want to stay here, you don't have to. I don't... want you to feel like I'm gonna force you to stay here if you really don't want to. Whatever you need, I can... I can help you out. All you have to do is ask." You're rambling, get to the point! "But if you do wanna stay, then I'd—... I mean, I'd... I would— um... like you to. I-I want you to." Smooth. Well done. Very thorough. "You'll always have a place with me, okay? Whenever you need it. I know it's— there's— it's a lot right now, for—... for both of us, with everything... that's happened... but I'm here for you. I mean that. I would never abandon my own kid. So... whatever you wanna do and whatever you need, I'll be there however I can. Okay?"
That was terrible. But hopefully somewhere in there she got that he wasn't pushing her away or telling her to leave. He was trying.

"Tony? TONY!" Wanda raced the short distance to where he was sat, hands hovering as she looked him over, "what happened? Where does it hurt?"
It had not been a good mission at all. They had been way over their heads with not enough personnel on hand and all hell had broken loose. And the absolute worst part was how poorly his suit fared. Like, what the hell even is this bullshit right now, he thought to himself as he tried in vain to get the automatic seal on his suit to... unseal. But it was stuck fast, and for the time being, he was trapped inside his own damn suit. Yeah, I know, gimme a break, he thought as he watched the digital display on the inside of his helmet flash with warnings and blare with various noises of alarm.
He was hurt, that much he could tell. The suit had caved in and dented in some places and he could tell he had been banged up quite a bit. The really bad pain in his ribcage hinted at a few broken bones and he'd probably lost some skin in various places. He couldn't tell, though, because the stupid suit wouldn't open. "Come on..." he said in frustration, but all it wanted to do was complain to him that it was damaged.
Tony didn't bother checking in at the med bay. What were they gonna do for him? They couldn't get the suit open, it was his suit, he had to do it... but unfortunately right now he was just too damn tired. So he went back to his room, sat down on the side of the bed, and just... sighed. he might've fallen asleep sitting up if Wanda hadn't come in the room. Uh-oh, Tony thought when he saw her look of worry. hearing her frantic words, he knew there was no point in lying to her... she already knew there was a problem... or ten.
"Well... uh... kindof... everywhere-ish," he replied. Seeing her hands hovering over the suit, he shook his head. "Damn thing's jammed and malfunctioning, can't get it off. Won't listen to me. So I'm just gonna... have a little sit-down for a bit..." he said, sounding out of breath and so exhausted.
"Do I have to? I mean... I feel a little banged up, but I'm sure I'm fine... probably..." That was a boldfaced quiver in his voice as he spoke, his measured breaths, and the horrible pain on his right side told him he had broken ribs, or at least badly bruised ones. But oh god, he hated medical stuff and just wanted to be left alone right now. Well, except for Wanda's company, of course.
"Okay. Fair enough. I... I figured you weren't gonna let me do that..." Tony accepted. When she said he needed to stay still, though, he was about to ask why when he saw the red energy in one of her hands. Oh. "I promise. I won't move a muscle." Please don't let this be the moment in which I sneeze and lose an arm or something, he couldn't help but think. "I trust you, honey," he added, just in case Wanda was feeling less than confident. With that, he fell silent and even held his breath to help stay perfectly still...
The Creature made a very good point, and Wanda agreed. Differences should indeed be celebrated, for they made the world a richer, more interesting place. Life would be terribly boring if everyone was the same, but sadly, not many saw it that way. Narrow-mindedness was all too common, in her opinion. That was why she chose to approach people from a place of curiosity, not cruelty.
Wanda smiled when the Creature said her eyes saw souls, thanking her for helping him see himself that way. It proved her point — he was a compassionate being, at his core.
"You are welcome," she said warmly, a flicker of something pensive crossing her features as she mulled over his words. When, indeed, had difference become a synonym of wrongness? Wanda had no idea, but... she knew that people feared what they didn't understand.
Her smile slowly disappeared when the Creature asked what had rendered her so saddened. Was her sadness that obvious? In any case, he appeared to be more perceptive than most, so he would've noticed regardlesss. Russet brown eyes flickered to the fire; sparks danced lightly around the burning wood, the sounds of it filling the silence between them.
"The pattern," Wanda said, voice barely above a whisper, eyes still on the fire. "The repetition. The way history rhymes with itself. The tyranny of fear and how quickly morality is tossed aside when there is a witch to burn, a monster to kill. Things have not changed at all. The mob has not changed. They find the thing that is different, and they destroy it... over and over again."
There was anger bleeding through her words now, unmistakable, and a faint red glow flared in her eyes. Carefully, Wanda took a deep breath and it disappeared completely.
"That is what saddens me," she concluded. "The things people do when they are afraid, even if it means becoming worse than the threat they fear. The cruelty dressed as justice. It saddens me — every time."
The Creature listened patiently and attentively to the woman's words, hearing the anger that boiled just beneath the surface of them. He was quiet, letting her get out her thoughts uninterrupted, and the more she spoke, the more he found that he agreed with both her words and the emotions they were evoking in her.
He had seen it too, of course, the way fear controlled some people to the point of irrationality and violence. For some, it seemed the first response to anything different, unknown, or in opposition to already held beliefs. People like Victor, who had feared so much what he could neither understand nor control that his first instinct was to lash out at it... and then destroy it. If The Creature was being honest, it was not only some people who were like this, it was many who were afflicted with this explosive and dangerous form of ignorance. To his utter sadness, he had found over his more than a century and a half of life that people who reacted that way... were in the majority.
So he understood. Oh, how he understood. But what he wondered, given how potent the woman's sadness and anger seemed to be, if she had ever encountered people who were not like that. As much hatred and violence as the Creature had seen, and as much as he had suffered the effects of it, he had also been privileged to know a handful of people who had been different. People like Elizabeth. Like the old man. Like.. this woman he was speaking to now. Ones who did not immediately react with fear or disgust, but rather, approached with curiosity, seeking not to bolster their ignorance but alleviate it by learning. Ones... who had a great capacity for empathy. Those people were what made life worth living, and encountering them was one of life's greatest privileges.
"I understand," he said softly when she had finished. "I feel... the same way. The same... sadness. I have felt anger too. So much of it... that it nearly consumed me. It burned within me like fire... and was there each morning when I awoke, like bile in my throat. But... there is good in the world. There are people who do not react with fear or violence. They may be rare... but finding one of them, having the privilege of knowing them... is one of the greatest joys I have known in my life." He paused, looking at the fire before turning to the woman. "It is disheartening... to know that most of the world... chooses not to understand... or to act with kindness. But finding those who do... can help to ease the anger and the pain. And... being one ourselves... can be a source of inspiration... and motivation. Be... what you wish others to be. Treat others... how you wish you had been treated. It is hard to do... especially when carrying such anger and sadness in our hearts... but it is worth the effort, I promise you."
After a moment, his gaze fell for a moment, as he pondered something. When it lifted to hers again, his tone was almost hesitant, as if afraid of prying too much. "May I... ask your name?" He hadn't realized in the past that remembering people was made easier by having a name to attach the memories and emotions to, and this woman... seemed like someone very much worth remembering.

Number generated = 20 (after a nightmare)
They had been staying at the Sanctum for some time now as Wanda, Tyson, and Strange all investigated how they might locate her children. It was a complicated problem, and so far there wasn't a clear answer. The more Wanda worried about the safety of her boys, and the more anxiety built up in her at not being able to get to them right now, the more restless her sleep became. Given all she'd been through in her life, nightmares had always been a problem for her, but they had gotten worse in recent days...
She awoke suddenly with a choked scream, lurching up in bed so quickly that she almost fell out of it. Although she didn't fully remember what her nightmare had been about, she was sure it had something to do with the Darkhold again. It was trying to weasel its way back into her life, she knew, even from the confines of Strange's supposedly isolating cage for it. She... should probably tell him about that, but for some reason, she had kept it to herself so far.
Breathing hard and looking around the room, she saw that she'd startled Tyson with her sudden rise from the bed. "Sorry..." she said, her eyes filling with tears. "I guess everything is starting to catch up with me..."
"As if you would say anything else, you smooth flatterer," Wanda teased. She then giggled as he listed the things he thought he wasn't very good at. "I don't mind your yapping. I like to listen to you... especially when you're really excited about something. It's very cute."
Her whole face was flushed now as they kissed again, and the warmth of him as he held her close was doing wonders to keep her grounded and calm. If only she'd had him months ago... perhaps various situations could have been avoided. "I hope you realize... that I am becoming very attached to you, sir," she said, half serious and half playfully. "Can you deal with a clingy witch?"
@thenexusofsouls (from the Creature) "I don't want to be like this anymore. I don't want to hurt people. I want to be gentle. I want to be good." (Maybe in a verse where he never got that closure with Victor and his anger just kept festering, and then he runs into Wanda somewhere? But feel free to run with this however you want!)
Wanda waited for him to finish speaking before moving in to close the gap, her hands coming up to rest on his cheeks. "You are good, you are. I know that you were made to believe that you are some monster, that you are evil but I know you...." There were a few tears that fell as she held him, her gaze lingering on his, "why don't you come inside? Come and rest here. You don't need to worry, you're safe with me."
The only good memories the Creature had of his "childhood" from only just two years prior... was Wanda. She had been kind, patient, curious, caring... and so beautiful. The wonder and happiness he had felt in seeing and interacting with her as a newborn being was still there now, even though he had grown so much. It helped to douse the rage and violence he carried around within him.
As she touched his face, his eyes closed, feeling the warmth of her hands. Oh, to be touched kindly. It was something he was not used to, but that he craved so desperately. The sad furrow in his brow easily gave that much away. He hadn't realized just how cold he was until her warm hands were against his skin. His heart wanted to leap from his chest as she called him her friend. "Friend..." he repeated in a soft whisper. That word meant so much to him. Letting her take his hand, he followed her inside her cabin.
Hearing her say he didn't need to remain by the doorway and that he could sit, the Creature slowly wandered into the room. But rather than take a seat in any chair, he simply plopped himself down on the floor facing the fire, having no idea how sweetly innocent he looked in that moment. It hearkened back to his awkwardness when he was so new to the world and was still learning how to use his body. Grabbing his ankles, he pulled his legs in to cross them before hanging his elbows on his knees.
Her comment about his hair caused him to bow his head and reach up to touch it as he dangled downward. "Do you like it?" he asked, surprised by the idea. "Victor... was always shaving it off," he remembered. "So I... wanted to grow it long." A small act of defiance, perhaps, on his part. "I always liked... your long hair... Wanda," he added shyly.
“My love…how wonderful to see your handsome face this morning.” (Ardeth your girl missed your ass)
"Not nearly as wonderful as it is for me to see your lovely one," Ardeth returned. He had been away for a very long time, leaving Wanda behind with his mother and people. They had slowly been coming around to the idea of her, both of what she was and that she was with him, though there were still some who were wary of her. He hated to leave her, but the trip had been a necessary one. Now, after months away, he was back again, and the sight of her had almost taken his breath away. "I dreamt of you, so often. But dreams hold no candle to the reality of you," he said, going to her and drawing her close. "I've missed you so much," he whispered. "Are you well? I hope there was no trouble while I was gone."
Just the sight, warmth, and scent of her was enough to settle him after so long a journey. Ardeth hadn't realized just how much he had missed Wanda until she was before him, and now that he had her in his arms, he didn't want to let her go. As she mentioned getting reacquainted, however, he felt his cheeks flush even more than the hot sun could cause them to do. "I—... if you would be so inclined, then yes, I... I would like that very much," he said, grinning bashfully, still not having lost that shyness even after they had been together a number of times.
"No, there has been quite enough of that in recent years," Ardeth agreed. He chuckled when she said she wasn't going to let him out of her sight. "I am glad to be home and with you again, so if you wish me to stay within your view, I will happily oblige," he said devotedly. "I hope you do not mind Horus joining us some of the time. He is very tired and a little irritable, I can tell. In the past few days, he has taken to landing on Amir's saddle and antagonizing him." Although, it did not take much to set off the proud camel's immense ego.

@thenexusofsouls (from Eric to lil’ sage Wanda) "I'll never know who I could have been if they hadn't made me into this." & "If there was ever any good in me, there's none left anymore." (Because I couldn’t pick between the two quotes and they go so well together. XD)
"I don't think that's completely true," Wanda replied softly, peering up at him from where she sat by the edge of the river. They had been travelling nonstop for what felt like days and they were in need of some rest. There was a town close by, somewhere for them to stay the night. Wanda had wanted to sit out in wild though, not enjoying how busy the town was. "I mean the part about you not having any good left in you. I think there is. If not, you wouldn't have been so nice to me. As for who you could have been... do you wish you knew?"
Maybe some men could have left her behind at that inn, or traded her for their own freedom or safety, but Eric couldn't. His conscience would eat him alive if he ever did something like that. It was alarming he quickly he had become invested in Wanda and her struggles, and if he was being honest, he'd never wanted to become attached to anyone ever again. Being attached meant you had that attachment to lose, and he'd lost enough in his life. Nevertheless, it had happened, and now he cared about her safety enough to know he had something to lose again. Someone to lose.
"Even a Huntsman needs t'live with 'imself," Eric said. "Couldn't do tha' if I'd done wrong by a girl I jus' met fer my own selfishness." Which countered his argument of being such a terrible person, but the point was long on him for the time being. "Aye, I had a reason," he said. "Didn't want you t'be scared, so I didn't say, but... I saw some of 'em. Huntsmen I used t'know. In th'last town. Thought it best t'put as much distance 'tween them an' us as I could. Must've worked. They've no' followed us." He did feel bad about the walking, though. "I'll see if... maybe I can get a job 'r two i'the next one an' earn enough t'buy a horse fer you t'ride."
"Then ye're more of an idealist than most," he said stoically. No, he really couldn't believe that he had a good heart. He was a failure, a brute, and a drunkard, and someday, he'd die as one. And he was convinced the world would be a better place for it when that happened. "No, we can' go back. Only forward," he agreed. "But I... I'll see you t'where ye're goin'. Where are ya goin' anyway? Ya ne'er told me."
Miles allowed a grateful smile to touch his lips, shoulders loosening like Jix had eased a little weight off them with his presence alone. The young man had been quietly humming a song to keep his nerves at bay, trying really hard to sketch something, but his pencil had not moved an inch. He stared at the blank space, closed his sketchbook and with a nod, he sat next to Jix.
Perhaps he shouldn't trust the other so quickly, so easily, but the tiny leafy creature in front of him had the most trustworthy face Miles had ever seen. Qué lindo, he thought as his smile widened.
"Jix," he repeated, the name coming out more solemn than he intended, "you can keep a secret right? I... I can't talk 'bout what's worrying me if I don't tell you somethin' personal, but I don't, uh... want anyone to know."
Jix had absconded with a little package of honey roasted peanuts from the kitchen and proceeded to climb up onto the arm of a couch. With much ado, of course, since he was terrible at climbing, but he eventually made it there. Sitting on the edge with his roots hanging over it, he sliced open the package with one of his sharp little fingers and peered inside. "Ahhh.... lunch time for Jix," he said to himself with a contented sigh. "Tasty peanutty-nuts. If you chew in mouth long enough, peanutty-nuts turn into peanutty-butters!" he said, giggling at the idea.
He reached inside the little bag and grabbed peanut, taking a little bite out of it. "Mmmmumumum... Oooh, are tasty! Have salt and sugar added to them or what?" he mused, looking in the bag again. "Are different, but... good!" he cheerfully decided.
Noticing that the only other person here was trying to work on something, Jix fell silent, except for the sounds of him crunching on his peanuts. He didn't want to be an annoyance if someone was trying to create something, after all. But when the person got up and came to sit by him, he smiled and swung his little roots, happy for the company. "Hi-hi!" he said politely. "Would like a peanutty-nut?" he asked, holding out the bag to Miles.
"Yes-yes. Jix can keep secrets," he replied, turning more serious as he noticed that Miles appeared to be troubled about something. "Is okay. No worries. You tell problems to Jix. My lips are sealed. Well... have to open mouth to eat peanutty-nuts, but... otherwise, lips are sealed. Promise not to tell secrets to anybody," he vowed. "Come on, you tell Jix. Maybe I can help with problems," he gently coaxed, smiling encouragingly.
