Outside of a few exceptions if I get inspiration for something, I will only be posting for blogs on their scheduled days. You can send me asks, memes, and reply to threads on off days, but I may wait to respond until that blog is scheduled. Note: I'm a night owl, so most of my writing is done between 9PM and 5AM (EST).

In Jurassic Park, one of the scenes that I believe impacted my life in a way I couldn't imagine then was when Dr. Alan Grant saw the Brachiosaurus for the first time.

Sam Neill's performance there, capture the amazement I had seeing that seemingly living, breathing dinosaur for the first time.

I can't imagine the amount of people who'm Sam Neill has inspired among his many roles.

RIP. Hope you're catching up Sir Richard Attenborough in the afterlife.

{i am the caretaker of souls} Hi guys. I don't usually make OOC posts unless I'm just updating you all on what's going on here, but I feel compelled to make one now. Sam Neill, one of the actors in Jurassic Park, Event Horizon, etc. has passed away, as I'm sure many of you have already heard. I just... want to say a few things... if I may...

I can't even begin to say what the first Jurassic Park movie meant to me. I was thirteen when it first came out, and back then, there was no Yo.uTu.be, no streaming services, no Netflix. Even now-defunct services I used to use like Hotline and Limewire weren't even a thing yet. If you wanted to see a movie, you had to either go to a theater or wait for it to come out on VHS or to be played randomly on TV. DVDs weren't even a thing until a couple years later. So it was a big thing among kids at that time to bond with friends over going to the movies, especially when one hit as hard as Jurassic Park and we wanted to see it multiple times. I don't remember how many times I went to see Jurassic Park, but it was around 11 or 12 times. I had it memorized. I bought the toys, books, and collectibles with my babysitting money. It was a huge part of my childhood as a tween.

I have always loved dinosaurs. When I was little, I wanted to be a paleontologist, but I was discouraged by people around me who told me I needed to pursue a more stable and lucrative career. Fast forward to now, I have a PhD in environmental microbiology that I can do nothing with due to lack of funding and job opportunities, and a chronic illness that impairs my ability to work in a laboratory setting. So. I should have just listened and followed my heart anyway, and it wouldn't have ended up any worse than where I'm at now, probably... but I digress. When I was very young, I liked to impress people with how much I knew about dinosaurs. My favorite has always been triceratops. i don't know why, I just always loved it and thought it was cute. I had so many plushies of it growing up. Who am I kidding, I just bought the Jellycat version a couple months ago, haha. My second favorite is parasaurolophus, partly because I just loved to say the name, and partly because I thought its cranial structure was so badass, haha. I was an absolute dinosaur nerd. I would sit for hours and pour over textbooks, encyclopedias, and picture books about dinosaurs when I was still in single digit ages, and by the time I was a teenager, I had begun collecting fossils. I still collect them today, and so far the pride and joy of my collection are my two triceratops fossils, a piece of a bony head frill, and a piece of a skull.

I cannot stress enough the impact that seeing Jurassic Park for the first time, and every time after that but especially the first, as a thirteen year-old in a big movie theater. It was loud, it was big, and I am a neurodivergent person who easily gets very nervous at concerts or movies because of the loudness and sensory overload. But movies were an exception I always tried to make, since they overall have always been a huge part of my life, from the age of four. Up until the first time I saw Jurassic Park, I had never seen dinosaurs depicted that way before. I had seen illustrated ones, animated ones, terrible animatronics and puppets, claymation, etc. but this... was something different. They looked... real. And they sounded real, with the loudness and the rumbling that took place in the theater (even though I know since then it's been debunked that some of them actually sounded like that, but my tween self didn't know any better, heh). And for a girl who had hyperfixated on all things dinosaurs (I even had dinosaur bones sheets on my bed, haha), this was a life-changing experience.

Now I want to stress that I did know that movies were fake, even at that age. However, I have always been a person who had a pretty solid ability to suspend disbelief, which means I can live in the moment when reading or watching something and think... okay I know this isn't real, but for right just now, I'm going to pretend it is for the sake of enjoying it more. It's like... getting really into something and not caring that it isn't real, because you're letting go and experiencing it emotionally as if it was. I've always done that for as long as I can remember. So when I first saw the brachiosauruses and the T-rex and all these dinosaurs in all their grandeur, it absolutely blew my mind. I felt like I was watching real dinosaurs. But nothing could compare to Dr. Grant's moment with the triceratops...

As I just mentioned, it was my favorite dinosaur, and still is, so I was overjoyed that it was included in the movie. For a girl who once wanted to be a paleontologist and who loved dinosaurs about as much as a person could, his reaction to seeing a triceratops felt so genuine, and I felt like I was emotionally having the same reaction. When he lays on its belly and it breathes, the whole theater rumbled and vibrated with the sound of its lungs inflating, its leathery skin stretching, its bones creaking. It felt so real to me, and I had a moment. I actually started crying when I saw it for the first time, that's how much it affected me. I absolutely shared in the character's awe at seeing this dinosaur in the flesh as if I was there too. (My friends laughed at me for crying, but I didn't care, heh.)

Sam Neill absolutely helped me to feel the human side of that scene, and drew me in with his emotion (and Laura Dern did throughout the movie as well, let's give credit where it's due). His almost childlike excitement and awe was exactly what I was feeling myself, suspending disbelief as I watched the movie and believing with my little imaginative heart for just a moment that I was seeing a real dinosaur. Of course I knew I wasn't, but I just... gave myself over to the moment and everything else just fell away for a second. As much as the characters in that scene felt like they were witnessing the culmination or realization of a life of research and work, I felt like I was reaching some kind of high point after years of only staring at dinosaurs in books or seeing them almost comically rendered in animation or clay. From that moment on, I was hooked on Jurassic Park and a fan of Sam Neill. Me and my best friend at the time developed such crushes on Dr. Alan Grant, it wasn't even funny, haha. *sighs and rolls eyes* Tweens. XD

I honestly don't get that involved with celebrity culture, and most announcements of celebrity deaths don't usually hit me very hard. But sometimes there are people who just hit differently, and hearing about them being lost brings back the emotions they were able to evoke in you with their performance and enthusiasm. I honestly didn't realize the impact he'd had on me until I heard he had passed away, and then it was like I was thirteen again, remembering how much that scene and his entire performance in that movie had carved out a sizeable chunk of my teen years and forever cemented my love of dinosaurs, paleontology, science, history, and the thrill of discovering something new in the world.

So I want to thank Sam Neill, for these moments and for several other movies of his that I loved, and for helping to make imagination flourish in the minds of kids like I was at the time. Movies like Jurassic Park and moments like what I felt meeting that triceratops with Dr. Grant on screen definitely helped shape the kind of writer that I am today.
