Opus 40.
Opus 40 is a 6 ½-acre bluestone sculpture located in Saugerties, N.Y. The sculpture was single-handedly constructed over a 37-year period by Harvey Fite using dry-key stone techniques adapted from the Mayans, comprising millions of pieces of indigenous bluestone, laid by hand.Â

California, California.
I don't remember much about LA from long-ago family trips to the West Coast from Buffalo -- just little bits here and there (Getty Center, Jamba Juice, Ennis House). With hazy memories and visions of perfect weather days and palm trees, I was excited to get reacquainted. My preferred way of getting a feel for a place is to take a good long walk, and so, on a hot day in July in car-centric LA, I did just that. I snapped the above photo on my first full day in the city while exploring (read: getting lost in) Silver Lake. The meandering Micheltorena Street and others in the area have prime examples of modernist architecture and glimpses of stunning vistas. Also on view: Italian Cypress trees aplenty, standing perfectly straight and reaching for the sky.Â
