Harvey Guillén in "What We Do in the Dressing Room"
Projecting my divorce onto HJ and Lavonte SO HARD RIGHT NOW
i'm not trying to stick my neck too much further into The Discourse around the latest taskmaster casting, and i don't want to come off patronising, but i'm surprised by some people's surprise. it's very easy for internet spaces to take celebs and put them in little boxes, and in the realm of britcom, which has its rough edges and is full of alcoholic perverts, it was very easy for people like greg and alex to be put into the 'inclusive woke wholesome safe friendly' box. i think, in general, the entire production knows where it stands in the entertainment landscape and everyone involved tries to protect that; you see that in, for example, greg's comedy outside of the show (the way he, say, massively avoids sexual humour when it's brought up on nmtb) or channel 4's pr around the atmosphere of the show (making sure contestants' reinforcing what a pleasurable experience taskmaster is is the biggest headline). but alex has been saying for years his dream guests include richard ayoade, a supporter of terf king glinner, and stephen merchant, former collaborator and good friend of terf prince ricky gervais. when alex was asked recently if he would have on someone controversial, interviewer clearly implying gervais imo, alex simply replied they "just want nice people" — unlike explicitly stating they won't waste food or burn plastic, there was no explicit mention of standing against transphobia, racism, or anyone who would endanger a safe and inclusive environment. just a guarded, british "nice". and, listen, i kind of get not wanting to commit to "no controversy ever!" because more or less every single comedian over 40 who has been on taskmaster has done something traceably problematic in their comedy career. comedy of the 2000s was really something else lol hardcore leftist, pro-palestine, trans ally frankie boyle was mistaken for far-right — another dastardly little box — for the better part of a decade because of his edgy and controversial material, right? and i won't sit here on my hypocritical throne as if i don't have nostalgic appreciation for people who have not turned out to be the best of guys or i won't put up with a couple of people i don't really like so i can keep watching big fat quiz. but when alex couldn't even say straightforwardly, no, we don't want ricky gervais on, i was certainly not instilled with confidence that the show would remain, in the eyes of the fans, in the little box it has been put in for some time. british politeness is held in higher regard than most other character traits... i mean, that's the truth. "we may not agree on everything but as long as people are civil we can still be friends" vibes. from my pov that's still british social culture in a nutshell tbh
PEOPLE NEED TO GET MORE ANTI PSEUDOSCIENCE.

yes, India made legal gender change impossible but the doctor down the street who gives me my T shots in a clinic so small that it's just two rooms was excited for me when she said my voice had dropped yes, India made legal gender change impossible but the receptionist who could see that I was a man didn't bat an eyelash when I asked to see the gynecologist and called me sir when he asked how I wanted to pay yes, India made legal gender change impossible but the barber cuts my hair exactly how I want it and never gave me strange looks for being in a men's salon not even back when I didn't pass as one
yes, India made legal gender change impossible but my friends have always gendered me correctly and stick to it even when it confuses other people and my friend's little sibling calls me older brother in Kannada yes, India made legal gender change impossible but my dog learned my new name quicker than the humans and she runs to give me a kiss when she's told to without being confused about who's being referred to
yes, India made legal gender change impossible but I can feel the Adam's apple growing in my throat and my muscles getting stronger, and my smile more real and I'm growing a beard, and I talk more freely
yes, India made legal gender change impossible but I'm here, and I'm alive, and so are you and there are good people, people who care and don't let them make you forget that-- you are not alone.
they're fucking, aren't they
there are few feelings greater than when the timeline hands you an opportunity to give more than you take
first step is we are born and everything is 'how can i get more i gotta take care of me.' then we learn to share and learn 'gotta make sure everyones even' but DANG there is something really powerful about a third step of walkin into a room and saying 'how can i make sure everyone has more than me?'
honestly people think 'strength' is the first step but true strength is so obviously the third one
just had a disconcerting thought
how do u pronounce georg of spiders fame

I realized I've never really properly drawn Greg (apart from some sketches), so here he is, in all his glory
I love when people ask "how did you learn this skill?" I just started, there's no secret. that's it. a vast majority of the time the only thing holding you back is your trepidation to start.
I’ve queued and then deleted all my Taskmaster s22 cast takes because they’ve been either flippant or mean in a way I don’t stand behind, but even trying to be thoughtful about it all I’ve got is “this really sucks and I hate the position I feel I’ve been put in as a viewer.”
I was well resigned to Richard Ayoade appearing on Taskmaster at some point. We live in a world where many people genuinely don’t know J. K. Rowling is a virulent transphobe, let alone that Richard Ayoade went out of his way in 2023 to praise Graham Linehan as a “man of great principle” for writing a memoir about how his descent into transphobia got him cancelled. It’s just kind of one step removed from actually doing something you could reasonably point to as disqualifying, and it wouldn’t surprise me if Greg and Alex are both completely unaware of the whole thing. Greg joked at the BAFTAs about auditioning to play Hagrid, and it gave me the ick for a moment, but I do get that he’s just not in the trenches with us. These are Gen X men who are supportive of trans people but not close to any, and so quite out of touch with the fight for trans rights.
Matt Lucas, though? I know both Greg and Alex have worked with him before and he was probably nice to them personally. But he just absolutely fucking sucks. He is known to suck. He sucks on the record. He’s done nothing to distance himself from either his own shitty past behaviour or his close association with David Walliams. All he’s done is sign up for family-orientated gigs to rehabilitate his image, which is of course part of the point of having Taskmaster on his CV.
So now as a queer TM fan I’m in the position of choosing between boycotting a series of my favourite show which stars an up-and-coming nonbinary transgender lesbian comedian in Chloe Petts, or watching her on a stage with a transphobe complaining about how he doesn’t want to be there while a racist sex pest accuses Greg of being homophobic. These are my choices.
It sucks.
in light of it being pride month and yesterday’s most recent example of greg being, well, greg, i wanted to highlight something that happened at the s22e2 taping i was at three weeks ago…
and accidentally ended up writing an essay. whoops. sorry. also contains light spoilers for s22 so skip this if you don’t want to see them.
will continue to bring this back <3

every once in a while i will feel a great pressure to exist, but then i just have to sit back and relax and remind myself 'oh wait, you already exist without even trying. GOOD JOB.' i think this realization can be a huge relief
