yeah i mean, it’s not parodic at all, is the point i’m making. the show takes it very seriously — it being not only mark and helly but, constituently, the whole idea that, if ur entire life is work, then u cannot make a meaningful distinction between work and life. it’s not really a satire, or at least it isn’t anymore. i think expecting the show to begin and end with a clean allegorical critique of late capitalist alienation or corporate culture is a mistake, tho it was understandable when we only had one season to go on. it’s clear to me now that this is a show much more interested in imagining the consequences of only living in an office (or a dentist, or a plane crash…) than it is in aping and thus critiquing “real” workplace cliches

a bit hand-wavy, but i like the conclusion of katy waldman’s nyer piece on sev and the fetish of the office for thinking thru the way the show activates the workplace as a locus of meaning but doesn’t tell us what it means — or seek to shortchange us for taking it as meaningful.
