Carved Wooden Doors
Egypt, 4th-7th century (Byzantine/Late Antique)
47 cm high by 35 cm wide by 4.8 cm thick (~19 x 14 x 2 in)
These wooden panels are the finest and most complete examples to survive from the Early Byzantine period, having been preserved in the dry sands of Egypt. The panels, made for a cupboard or cabinet (or possibly used as window shutters), each have richly carved medallions of interlacing bands set with rosettes or eagles. A very similar pair of wooden doors is in Athens, Benaki Museum, inv. 9083.

Made in the late 5th century for a Vandalic nobleman in Hippo, modern Algeria.

“Coptic Textile with Aphrodite Anadyomene”
A textile fragment depicting the Birth of Venus in the center roundel and surrounded by decorative Nilotic motifs (water, ducks, fish, lotus flowers).
Woven out of dyed wool and linen, and part of a tunic or cloth.
Made in the early 500s at Antinopolis in Egypt by Coptic monks. Buried in the necropolis of Christian anchorites at Antinopolis and unearthed by archeologist Albert Gayet, a pioneer in the field of Coptic textiles, in the 1890s. Purchased by the Louvre, where it is currently held.
Head of an Amazon, Roman copy of an original Greek bronze, which would have dated to 440-430 BCE. Greek marble. Currently located in the Capitoline Museums.

Marcus Aurelius

Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius was born on this day in AD 121. This striking half-life-sized bronze portrait was found near Brackley in Northamptonshire. Marcus Aurelius’ philosophical ‘Meditations’ are considered to be one of the world’s most influential works, incorporating stoic principles he used to cope with life as a warrior and leader. Aurelius’ reign was troubled by natural disasters and war. His personal writings outline a philosophy of commitment to virtue above pleasure, and tranquility above happiness.
