Before fashion photography, illustrators were integral to the industry - their work featured throughout the best magazines. Today, fashion illustrations appeal to collectors as art in their own right.

Extreme Fashion: Expression or Attention?

Looking back at past eras, we recognize the what was in fashion. The 20s were all about the sequins, the flapper dresses, and the draped cut. For the men, suspenders and a laddy hat. The 50s were all about the triagle cut. The 60s, were ... , and in the 80s you weren't in fashion if you weren't sporting every neon colour out there with the cropped tops, jeans jackets and massive scrunchies. Fast forward to 2014 and its still a mystery as to what's trending this decade, or the last for that matter.

Instead what seems to be trending is self-expression. "Fashionistas" are neither treating clothes as functional nor flattering. For most, it is a competition to be the most expressive and the most outrageous. With that said, it seems we have sacrificed style with the beauty of a silhouette for attention.
