Atheism is about not holding a belief in gods. I suppose it doesn’t preclude belief in some kind of afterlife any more than it precludes belief in ghosts - which I guess one could argue is a form of afterlife.

I’m just really unclear how you imagine this afterlife works. Some kind of natural process not driven by a consciousness? They were your loved ones by virtue of physical process of birth and proximity due to happenstance here in this enormous universe. What makes you think you would be co-located with them in a potentially equally large after-universe? Which “you” would you be? Will Uncle Bob be petulant single-word (”no!”) 2 year old Uncle Bob, rebellious pyromaniac youth Uncle Bob, regimented military man Uncle Bob, or withered Alzheimers Uncle Bob? Will Aunt Carol have the histrionic personality disorder that heavily influenced her interactions with everybody in this life, or will it vanish when her mortal brain turns off? Will all the miscarriages be there? Won’t eternal peace be extremely boring?

And more importantly, how did you manage to find evidence and logic for an afterlife convincing, but evidence and logic for gods unconvincing?

It strikes me as more like something you’ve convinced yourself out of comfort rather than because you think there’s good reasons to believe it’s true. Would you accept the same “comfort” basis for a god claim?

Atheists can believe in Flat Earth, homeopathy, ghosts, banshees, John Edward, Bigfoot, Illuminati, UFOs and mole people.

All bible based religions are dependent on the creation story being literally factual. If that account is only myth, then it doesn’t matter who thereafter mistakenly thought it was literally true (historical Jesus, popes, religious institutions)…they extrapolated from a myth…and therefore…their projections are rendered null and void*.

It has proven, using evidence discovered by using the scientific method, that the bible’s creation story is not literally factual, and therefore nothing but primitive myth. The bible account is therefore not reliable evidence for anything. Bible based religion It is like a house “built on the sand. The rain came down, the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat on that house; and it fell—and great was its fall…!”

The religious blame god-given human free will…to have hog-tied god’s hands concerning human’s (supposedly eternal) destiny…but bible god’s incompetence predates humans…

In the unverifiable, nonsensical, immoral religious stories…

bible god creates the devil a long time before humans, knowing the devil will use his own free will to abandon god, together with a third of all the heavenly hosts… Then, bible god leaves the devil-rebellion matter unresolved…to fester and only make everything thereafter worse!

bible god introduces innocent humans into god’s unresolved devil-rebellion mess…knowing the two humans he created will abandon god, creating a sinful nature that will be transmitted to all their offspring…!  Then, bible god leaves the so called “original sin” matter unresolved…to fester and only make everything thereafter worse…as the world’s population grows…!

bible god’s plan for human population growth is for mother/son, father/daughter, brother/sister, mother/grandson, father/grand-daughter, uncle/niece etc incest to populate the earth…the same plan he relies on again after the bible flood…and then, thousands of years later…demands sexual purity from everyone…but only tells the (literate) Hebrews…on a planet full of diverse cultures…!

god tells people to be plentiful…then gets scared when they do and peacefully work together in industrious harmony, to build a little tower. So he confounds their ability to communicate in the same language with each other…painfully ignorant of people’s ability to quickly learn other/more than one, language…and so still communicate with each other…! I can employ a qualified tradesman that barely speaks English, and using pictures, mime, charades, etc, “tell” him what I want him to do, (eg fix the toilet)…and he does it perfectly!

despite not having told the whole world what he expects from them…bible god drowns everyone in the world…babies, the unborn, children, the mentally challenged, the elderly, etc…all except one family…to use as breeding stock to repopulate the world…!

bible god destroys Sodom and Gomorrah because of the inhabitant’s sexual depravity…except for Lot and his two daughters (god having assaulted :) mum to death…for looking back at the town’s destruction)…and despite Lot having offered the towns-folk his two virgin daughters to be raped. to date bible god has not yet resolved the devil/rebellion…or the human/rebellion…or his church abusing minors…or his church defrauding members for religious leader’s self-aggrandizement… because bible god is imaginary…!

* Using the formula…1 x 0 = 0 :

The proposition that there is a god, as outlined in the bible x 0 (ie is based on the bible creation myth) = there is no god as outlined in the bible…!

The proposition that there was original sin of stealing magic fruit, as outlined in the bible X 0 ( ie is based on the bible creation myth) = there is no original sin as outlined in the bible…!

No original sin means no need for a human sacrifice/redeemer, means no son of bible god sent to redeem, means Christianity is null and void…which means they are stealing your money over a myth…and no need to pretend eating god’s flesh and drinking god’s blood (primitive cannibalism/religious communion)…!

Conclusion: There is no salvaging the bible, or bible based religions…which are built on, and vigorously defend unverifiable human fabricated myth.

The bible always lurks available for the next immoral religious/political leader to mislead gullible and ignorant followers…to justify their collective immorality…by saying they are simply following the bible**…!

Claiming it as one is extremely UN-american. 

First and foremost we do NOT have a national religion. 

Our constitution not only leaves religion out, but directly states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof” ITS LITERALLY THE FIRST LINE OF THE FIRST AMENDMENT.

But if that isn’t enough to convince you that America is founded on religious freedom and not Christianity then why don’t we go back even before the constitution. Yes, we’re going to go further back than 1789 - more than 100 years earlier. 

1620, the Mayflower, Pilgrims, among the first to colonize here- they came to “the new world” on the Mayflower to practice religious freedom. They were followed a decade later(1630) by the Puritans who also came to be free from religious persecution. 

The United States is not a Christian nation and it certainly was not founded on Christianity- It was founded by religious freedom, and it is that freedom that ALLOWS You to be Christians, it allows me to be an atheist, and it allows everyone else to believe whatever they believe. To claim otherwise is NOT american, it completely undermines everything we stand for. 

Secondly- you do NOT have to swear on the bible in court. You can use the constitution, or simply recite an affirmation.

The oath you often here stated also has alternatives to theistic statements: Do you solemnly (swear/affirm) that you will tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, (so help you God/under pains and penalties of perjury)?

Sorry, we’re not a christian nation.

We are a free one. Christians have a right to their beliefs, but so does every other individual to their differing beliefs.

People who swear a lot are usually more honest than those who don’t.
