> Get into color grading
> realize every screen displays color slightly differently
> realize every camera captures color a little differently
> realize every format and image editor translates color
> realize every printer deposits ink differently
> realize every kind of paper accepts ink differently
> realize colors look completely different under different lighting conditions
> ok I'm going to do everything greyscale now
> black density changes as ink cartridge depletes and depending on viscosity after multiple prints
> "what color white are you using"

so cool how advanced the algorithm has become, it literally only takes like a decade or more of spying on all my internet activity and then it can expertly curate a selection of 15-20 youtube videos that i don't really want to watch, and then keep showing me those videos over and over again for a week so i can scroll past them again. the future is now
I feel like a horse with no name is probably the best song in the world. Not even my Favorite song just the best

So this is not a plea for money. This is something that surprised me, and chatting with people on discord, they were unaware of as well.
Discovered last year I couldn’t look at my 2015 MacBook Air without it triggering nausea and migraines, and figured the screen died. Have been getting by on my phone, but concluded I really need a laptop again.
Saved up, realised I could afford a brand new MacBook Neo, and got one.
-And I couldn’t spend more than five minutes looking at the screen without massive eye strain, nausea, vertigo, and if I pushed it, I-need-to-lie-down-in-a-dark-room-for-hours migraines.
Looking up MacBook and Eyestrain explained what is going on. The liquid retina displays that Apple currently has uses Pulse Width Modulation or PWM. In order to give the screens a deeper depth of colour and contrast, PWM flickers between several hundred to thousand times a second.
And there is currently no way to turn it off. There are settings and apps to reduce it, but there is no way to stop the screen from flickering. Checked Apple forums, called Apple Support, and the time I could look at the screen kept shrinking. Got the laptop Tuesday, returned it Friday, today is Sunday and I’m still dealing with a vertigo migraine.
For MacBooks, it seems to vary on the computer model and the software it uses. In retrospect, the issue with my MacBook Air started after a major software update.
And it’s not just an Apple thing. Current Windows and Android screens do the same thing. There’s even a Reddit for people who are sensitive to PWM flickers to help find computers and screens that won’t trigger eyestrain and headaches.
So, yeah. This week has been a learning experience. But for those who are prone to headaches and migraines, this may be something to be aware of, cause I was not.
RANN TOLD GEN EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!
Pronoun roles on discord servers aren't a bad idea, but there is the fun implication that you can ping an entire pronoun set.
Hey I got a problem with something, this is an all they/thems on deck situation
So my favourite version of the Nightwing name origin is from Action Comics #886, where Nightwing is a dragon-like deity from a Kryptonian myth. He was created by Rao "to seek out evil and corruption that hides in the shadows; to pursue it and destroy it."
Very cool.
Anyway, it gave me an idea for an AU: what if, through some comic book shenanigans, Dick became the vessel for Nightwing of Krypton? ...You know, kind of Naruto-style? (Because apparently those old hyperfixations never really leave you xD)
Maybe it would have happened when he took on the name? Idk I just think it'd be neat
Tl;dr: lock up a giant dragon in that boy
people are like we need UBI to cope with the impact of AI but presumably that only makes sense if some subsector of the economy suddenly starts making massive profits that can be taxed to fund it, right? (or if GDP starts growing so much faster than government debt that more money can be printed to fund it, which is basically the same thing).
an AI bubble that doesn't translate to a boom in profits... puts lots of people out of work without making anyone rich? hmm.
how would that scenario happen? if AI lets companies reduce their workforces, whatever money they save goes into their profits
so a labour expense of $X becomes an AI expense of $Y, where X > Y, and the extra profit X - Y is shared between the company and whoever is providing the AI, but TaxRate * (X - Y) is considerably smaller than X, right? so you can't replace the salaries of those workers with a UBI paid for solely by taxing the profits created by laying them off, and paying them less than they were earning before will cut into the profits and tax elsewhere too, making the problem worse.
the benefit of automation is that it boosts productivity and those workers don't just leave the workforce, they go do other work, right?
Well, surely some of the workers go do other work. If R is the fraction of laid-off workers’ salaries that permanently disappear instead of being recreated in whatever new work is done, then all that needs to be true to fund a UBI that keeps demand afloat is X*R < TaxRate*(X-Y).
right, there's a slider between the scenario where AI doesn't boost total production at all, it just puts people out of work, and the scenario where it essentially doubles your workforce.

today’s the only day you can reblog this
“There Will Come Soft Rains”, Ray Bradbury
“I’m sorry, Jane. I know it wasn’t right. And the thing I’m going to do for you is to willingly step out of your life. Love you with all my heart. Big Jane belongs to Little Jane.”
SURFIN' BOY — Red Velvet, 2026
Ray Bradbury’s short story “There Will Come Soft Rains” that was written in 1950 is set on the day of August 4th, 2026 (tomorrow)!! Now’s your chance to read it around the time it’s based in!
Audio: A recording of Leonard Nimoy reading it on Internet Archive.
Text: A PDF version.
Graphic Novel: On Internet Archive.
I used to set this one for second year undergraduate creative writing seminars on writing science fiction on a double bill with Octavia E. Butler's "Bloodchild" and no-one here gets out alive.
!!!! Today is the only chance we’ll ever have to listen to this absolute banger of apocalyptic fiction on the very day the story is set 😲✨
Nemoy’s voice is PERFECT in this!
(A content warning if you do listen - the dog dies, though it’s not super graphic)
I paused the robot vacuum so I could listen to this 1950’s story predicting the robot vacuum.
"Are you still not going to answer my call?" "Fine, just answer your call from now on, right?"

BREAKING NEWS: screenshots from your phone not an appropriate format for submitting work in college classes.
my partner was a TA for an intro-to-subject course in grad school. finals week rolls around and the students are required to submit this big module assignment they've had like a month to do for a decent chunk of their grade. if you've submitted everything, you'll see a summary screen with a star beside each module name showing it's been completed.
an hour before the assignment deadline, he receives an email from a student claiming they completed the assignment, but the system is not allowing them to submit. there's an image attached to the email. partner goes to open what he assumes is a screenshot of that summary page.
instead, he sees that the student has taken a photo of their laptop from about 2 feet away, with that page open. strange, but it wouldn't be the first time a college freshman has lacked the tech literacy to take a screenshot. he almost doesn't look twice at it, but he realizes something about it just feels a little bit...off. so he zooms in.
the student had CUT STARS OUT OF CONSTRUCTION PAPER and TAPED THEM TO THEIR LAPTOP SCREEN BESIDE EACH MODULE NAME. you could see where they actually had completed the first couple of modules, but the stars for all the subsequent ones were like, double the size of the first two and exactly as uneven/irregular as you'd expect if you were freehanding them with scissors.
probably would've been quicker and easier to just photoshop them in but no, this student took a refreshingly creative, arts-and-crafts approach to getting an academic misconduct case
The one thing I will say for AI is that it's made me much more appreciative of homebrewed bullshit
You would be surprised if the number of times at my old job we’d request court documents and instead of getting a printed copy get like. A photo someone took of it and certified
more ppl need to get hooked on this drug called album in order. not enough people on album in order these days
