to preface, i'm going be very honest and say i don't want to give a crash course in structural dissociation. so. go read here if you don't know how DID works. it's a decent overview of the theory. (if you want more in depth clinical information, go read the haunted self) the website doesn't cover a lot of personal experience so if you're interested in that, feel free to shoot me an ask or go read any of the many voices newsletter issues. (note: this newsletter was started back in the 90s when DID was still MPD, a lot of the clinical information inside it is outdated. that does not make the personal experiences that the newsletter highlighted any less valuable)

2nd preface: there isn't much textual basis for this and I know that. i just enjoy interpreting him through this lens. what there is textual evidence for is:

1. childhood trauma (the quiet rapture and that shot of him around the dead bodies, him being implied to have been raised in a cult)

2. different trauma responses (fawn response after the xray incident, anger responses, dissociating away from pain after drinking fucking isopropyl alcohol (this would burn your esophagus. really bad.), dissociating away from pain while being mutated alive by blood to be able to fight.)

3. flashbacks (multiple flashback scenes, i don't think i need to elaborate that much on it)

so that's a pretty strong argument for C-PTSD and dissociation, which are prerequisite for DID.

anyway, on to the headcanons:

- dysfunctional as fuck. love healthy multiplicity but that's not at all what they've got going on

- undiscovered system. not polyfrag. the denial is heavy with them. most of their ANPs automatically mask as Simon to varying degrees of success and frustration

- heavy amnestic barriers between most alters

- little to no internal communication, especially for ANPs. EPs and internal alters have a sliiightly easier time but because of the amnestic barriers alters that weren't involved in the interaction don't really remember all that <3 some parts think to leave notes on account of their bad memory, others forget

- host that's present for much of the movie split post-Filament

- simon has chalked up many of the DID-related experiences through a religious lens. simon gets co-con with an anger holder and then later is like "i was being fucked with by a spirit actually".

- off of that, both persecutors and protectors in his system take on strong religious overtones

- butcher is a protector role
