For years, he’s had the same routine. For years, he’d only have to wake up and there’d be lips pressed against his cheek, a raspy happy birthday whispered against his skin. He’d wonder, sometimes, how Harry could pinpoint the exact moment he’d woken up, because some years he hadn’t even been able to open his eyes before those lips made contact with his skin. He’d deduced that it must mean that Harry had been awake before him, every year without fail, and had been watching him. Had known him well enough to know when Louis slipped back into consciousness. It’d made him feel warm and safe and known, once upon a time.

This year there aren’t any lips pressed to his cheek. There isn’t a raspy happy birthday whispered against his skin.

This year, Louis wakes up alone.

2016 "Hi,” the boy chirps, and Louis sort of wants to scowl, mostly because he doesn’t.

“Hi,” he echoes, lower in pitch but not unfriendly, and the boy’s smile brightens in response.
