I watched the new season in a single sitting. Neil & Co. ticked soooo many boxes in the S02 Bingo Card, but the one I was truly hoping they skipped (because I knew it was there), they left for the end and took out a freaking giant red marker to tick it.
"Aziraphale never loved Crowley and never will".
We saw it firsthand back at the bandstand in S01. "I'm an Angel, I'm good, I'm smart, I'll be right about this". And he's not. And no matter how many times Crowley tried to make him see the truth, Aziraphale wouldn't budge.
What Maggie says, "he always seed the good in people" struck me as odd. 6000 years living with humans, witnessing first hand everything humanity can f* up without demonic intervention, and you still think things will get better if you are a better person?
If the Catholics had an issue with S01, they are gonna demand an exorcism for S02 because the first 2 eps were some of the best anti-church propaganda I've seen.
Everything Heaven stands for, through the eyes of Aziraphale serves only to make Humanity suffer. And Crowley was there, every step of the way, asking the most basic question "why do they need to suffer? Why do the innocent have to die?" And he's been asking that for 6000 years….
But what does Aziraphale propose to him in the end? "Join us back. Become and angel again and help me spray misery to the beings you've come to admire and respect. I'm an Angel, I'm good, I'm smart, I'll be right about this." AGAIN
I can't believe how much of a red flag Aziraphale is. Not once does he consider Crowley his equal. He will always be a demon and the only chance for him to accept Crowley at any higher lever would be to turn him into an Angel again. To throw him back to the place he was kicked out off because he was being himself. He wants to trap Crowley just to he can be right.
And I'm glad Crowley's had enough. Crowley is obviously more experienced because he's been on both sides already, and one would assume you would look for his expertise, let him have an opinion, but as soon as Aziraphale catches a glimpse of God's ineffable plan, everyone else goes out the window.
I hope there's no S03. Because S03 would mean trying to convince Aziraphale he needed to be with Crowley and not Heaven. And Crowley would turn into the lapdog Aziraphale wants him to be. And we learned through S02 how much more of a complex character Crowley really is. How in peace he is with both his angelic and his demonic side. How he can navigate through both. He learnt pretty soon since his Fall how to be true to himself, no matter what the Ineffable Plan threw at him. And he tried, for so long, to teach this to Aziraphale. To invite him into the fragile existence he was creating. But Aziraphale really said "no fam, my people want me back, see ya".
And that SHOULD be the end of their pseudo-relationship. You can lend you hand, your shoulder, your ear for some time before but if the other side only keep using you, eventually you reach a breaking point. I'm glad Crowley is there now. Crowley mentioned both Heaven and Hell were toxic. Aziraphale is toxic as well. "You are my companion when it suits me and HOW it suits me". And Crowley spent the entire season doing shit he did not agree with just to keep Aziraphale happy, and when he asked for something in return, he got shut down.
Bottom line is, Aziraphale KNOWS Crowley would NEVER return to Heaven. They cast him out and then tried to kill Aziraphale. There's not a chance in Heaven, Hell or Purgatory that Crowley would CHOOSE Heaven. But Aziraphale still tries to force him to make that choice, because, ONCE AGAIN "I'm an Angel, I'm good, I'm smart, I'll be right about this".
I'm happy Crowley cried his eyes out on his way out. Because he KNOWS it's over. And there's no going back from that. There's no storyline that can redeem Aziraphale. I don't want a storyline that can redeem Aziraphale. Because that would be a favour to Aziraphale, but it would also be a slap in the face for Crowley. Crowley has no flat in Mayfield and no friends in Soho. There's no need for him to be tied to a place that has constantly shut him down. Crowley deserves better, and Aziraphale is not and will never be that.
