Tbh i think 90% of teaching would be smooth sailing if only we could convince these kids that you canât get good at something unless you actually practice it. Not being good at something isnât an excuse to not do it, itâs a reason to do it more

When a student who always wastes their time tries to explain why they earned a bad mark
Theyâre like:
Iâm like:
Not a compliment
Coworker: Holli! On time I mentioned to *insert name of male coworker* that I thought you were pretty, but he said you were too fat to be pretty. But now that your slimmer her things your pretty! Isnât that great!
Me: *external* ...ummmm... oh... wow

Did you know that after they switched to blind auditions, major symphony orchestras hired women between 30% to 55% more? Before bringing in âblind auditionsâ with a screen to conceal the the candidate, women in the top 5 major orchestras made up less than 5% of the musicians performing.
so I believe it was actually more complicated than that, in interesting ways. Because at first, when they did blind auditions, they were STILL hiring more men.
âŠThen they put down a carpet, so that high heels didnât clack on the floor, and BOOM women were suddenly getting hired.
The testers didnât even know thatâs what they were picking up on, which just goes to show how tiny of a cue it takes for misogyny to kick in.
The case of blind auditions for orchestras and how it dramatically changed the gender makeup of orchestras is a very illuminating example of gender bias, and an interesting possible way of countering it.
You can be sexist without knowing it. You can be racist without knowing it. This is not a moral failing; it is a moral imperative to remember that you are fallible, and take steps to limit the damage your squishy ape brainâs foibles can cause.

In a much-watched case, a Michigan agency has approved NestlĂ©âs plan to boost the amount of water it takes from the state. The request attracted a record number of public comments â with 80,945 against and 75 in favor.
NestlĂ©âs request to the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality to pump 576,000 gallons of water each day from the White Pine Springs well in the Great Lakes Basin was âhighly controversial,â member station Michigan Radio reports. But despite deep public opposition, the agency concluded that the companyâs plan met with legal standards.
âIt is very clear this permit decision is of great interest to not only residents in the surrounding counties, but to Michiganders across the state as well,â MDEQ Director C. Heidi Grether said in approving the permit.
âIn full transparency, the majority of the public comments were in opposition of the permit,â Grether added, âbut most of them related to issues of public policy which are not, and should not be, part of an administrative permit decision.â
Under the plan, Nestlé will be approved to pump up to 400 gallons of water per minute from the well, rather than the 250 gallons per minute it had been extracting. The company first applied for the new permit in July 2016.

Every week in Murfreesboro, Tenn., Zibin Guo guides veterans in wheelchairs through slow-motion tai chi poses as a Bluetooth speaker plays soothing instrumental music.
âCloudy hands to the right, cloudy hands to the left,â he tells them. âNow weâre going to open your arms, grab the wheels and 180-degree turn.â
The participants swivel about-face and continue to the next pose. Guo, a medical anthropologist at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, has modified his tai chi to work from a seated position. Even though many of the participants are not wheelchair-bound, using the mobile chairs makes it easier for them to get through a half-hour of movement.
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has given $120,000 in grant money to Guo to spread his special wheelchair tai chi curriculum. He started in Chattanooga, and has expanded his class offerings to Murfreesboro.

questions men should ask themselves more often
- am i being unnecessarily forceful/loud?
- am i talking over others? are those others mostly women?
- why does this person feel like that? how can i acknowledge their feelings?
- does she seem comfortable around me? if not, why?
- am i devaluing women as a joke/when they make me angry? am i insulting womenâs appearance and sanity whenever they make me angry?
- am i listening to other peopleâs knowledge/experiences or am i only talking about my own? how can i share my knowledge/experiences in a respectful way that doesnât monopolize conversation or infantalize others (primarily women)?
THIS.
Especially:Â âdoes she seem comfortable around me? if not, why?â
The amount of times âwell meaningâ married male coworkers have made me uncomfortable with âfriendlyâ touching or by âbeing niceâ and making comments on my appearance.Â

An excellent anti-linguistic-discrimination limerick for Grammar Day:Â
If you argue that language is weaker and the outlook for English is bleaker, consider the source of your silent discourse. Are you judging the speech, or the speaker?Â
