fic writing leads you to the strangest places. Like when soy sauce was invented, and the average time it took to dry chestnuts, and if the stars would have appreciably moved in the sky in a thousand years
#i wonder if theres some relationship between brightness and the stability of a star #because constellations are generally picked with very bright stars and things like the zodiac have held for around 3k years #but maybe they just held because they picked lucky stable stars? #would be interesting if most places had their own constellations they just fell out of favor as the skies that made them changed
HELLO MY GOOD FRIEND BABYLON. YOU HAVE ACTIVATED ME LIKE A SLEEPER AGENT BECAUSE HISTORICAL ASTRONOMY IS VERY COOL.
So firstly, YES there is a direct correlation between a star's luminosity and its stability, in terms of lifespan. It doesn't affect how the star moves across the sky, but it does affect how long the star exists for. Brighter stars are larger, which means hotter, which means they burn faster. This of course is still on the scale of dozens-of-millions to billions of years, so it would not necessarily change much over human history... for main sequence stars, that is. As it turns out, most of the brightest stars in the night sky, the ones that are keystones of constellations, are giant stars. As in, they are actively dying. Some may stick around a few million years, but most others will be gone in a few dozen thousand. We are currently waiting on Betelgeuse, the brightest star in Orion, to go supernova, which could happen at any point in the next couple millennia or so.
By the same token, this means that the majority of major named stars are extremely large, extremely bright, and extremely far away, and very distant stars tend to move in the sky much slower. However, there are a handful of notable bright stars that are bright because they are very close, and these stars DO move appreciably over millennia. Trace the sky backwards ten thousand years to the start of Mesopotamian civilization and you find that constellations like Canis Major & Minor, Aquila, and Volans become a bit warped because their brightest stars are all close enough to move noticeably over that time period. It's not really enough to change a culture's constellations... but if you traveled back to the age when our ancestors first discovered fire, some two million years ago, you would barely be able to recognize the sky.
Additionally, Earth's rotation precesses over the course of its orbit, which means the exact position of the heavens as a whole moves in a very slow circle over about 26000 years. Polaris (Alpha Ursae Minoris), the star we know as the North Star, actually wasn't close enough to the north celestial pole to be useful even a thousand years ago! In fact, the Egyptians four thousand years ago used Thuban (Alpha Draconis) as their polestar, and in another dozen millennia it'll be Vega's turn (Alpha Lyrae).
Bonus fun fact: some cultures didn't just make constellations out of the stars; they also saw shapes in the arc of the Milky Way itself. Many Australian Aboriginal peoples, for example, viewed the Coalsack Nebula as an emu!
Until death, all defeat is psychological.

Coming into a fandom late
Coming into a fandom early and watching it become an angry clusterfuck
Being in a dormant fandom that suddenly comes alive again after a new book/movie
Don’t forget about those who come in the midst of a fandom war.
Accuracy at its best
Being in a fandom and not even knowing there’s a war going on…

When You’re Not In The Fandom But You’re Nosy AF
When you get into a fandom only to discover it’s dead
This gets better every time I see it.
@fuboos-mess
Being in a dead fandom…
Or being in such a tiny fandom that it feels like youre the only one
The accuracy hurts.
Being in a fandom that had a shit ending.

Being in a fandom when shit goes down and everyone has different opinions
When you are in a fandom and don’t care for others people opinion…..even if they are right…(believe me, I have met several of those)
Being in a fandom you never meant to join

I CHOKED ON FUNDIP
HISTORY HAS BEEN ENGRAVED INTO THIS POST
Scifi writer fear: readers who like to do more math than you do
Writer: Okay so this seems like an appropriate size for this room, given its function and the drama needed for the scene...
Readers: Perfect! we were told 3 chapters back that this room is 'the average room size for a spaceship of this type', meaning that we can use this size information to back-calculate the volume of the spaceship, adjust for the stated 0.9atm air pressure... and then looking at the required air cycling rate for humans... we can see that the air purification system briefly described in chapter 6 when they were replacing air filters would be impossible for this spaceship!
Tumblr ask 6 months later: It was really clever how you used the size of the rooms and the air filter system to hint that the ceilings of all the rooms were very very low and thus let the audience deduce that humans in the future are much shorter than humans today! That's a great little nod to the 'humans have gotten taller over time' thing that people like to say, and really subtle, since people who hadn't done the math on the room volume would never see it!
Writer: ... Yes. That was... very clever... of me... to do.
Showing numbers to sci-fi readers is a little like making the let's-play pose at an excitable terrier of unidentified provenance.
New scifi writer fear: linguists
it’s nice seeing other people starting to open their eyes to what i’ve been saying for a while in that the current use and proliferation of the term “gooning” is an outright tool of fascism
the second “gooning” stopped referring to a specific sexual practice and started to be used as a replacement for “masturbation” we needed to kill it immediately and sadly we didn’t
if you call someone a “masturbator” in a derisive way you sound like a fucking mormon but suddenly you switch to calling them a “gooner” and you’ve created a way to express the same puritanical beliefs around masturbation that is not only palatable to the average person but the attached underlying implications of the term make people way more susceptible to adopting those beliefs themselves
leftists need to fucking stop using the term “gooner” right fucking now
demonizing human sexuality and treating masturbation and sexual activity as deviant and disgusting are straight up fascist tools and it’s startling how successful this aspect of it has been the last few years
Reblogging for knowledge of yet another dog whistle
Take It from the Top | Chapter 3
‘Jazz isn’t just about melody and harmony.’ He slips off the end of the bench and shrugs off his coat at last. ‘It requires active listening with your whole body,’ he says, dragging his fingers down his newly uncovered torso. Satoru follows the movement, swallowing at the expanse of pale skin visible under black mesh, leather straps, silver studs. Then Getō Suguru clicks those very same fingers in his face. Blinking, Satoru urgently lifts his gaze, only to see him sweep his dark hair off his pretty face. Smirking as he pulls his ponytail tight, Getō Suguru downs the rest of Satoru’s drink and slams the glass onto the table. ‘And it requires putting your ego aside.’
Only 10 months after the last one, chapter 3 of Take It from the Top is here! It's nerdy as hell (you have no idea) and contains one of my favourite things @14th-lulullaby has ever drawn 👾 It's silly and soft and super musical — read on AO3 ♥

Affirmations for fanfic authors
It’s okay to take a break. - We all need time to recharge, and your fans will still be there when you get back!
It’s okay to go from fandom to fandom. - Nobody is going to criticize you for following your muse, and if they do, then you know who not to associate with in the future!
It’s okay to have a niche. - If smut is where it’s at, then write smut. If you’re all about the fluff, then schmoop away. If angst is what does it for you, then invest in tissues. Nobody has the right to tell you that you should be doing something else if that isn’t what interests you!
It’s okay to be critical of your own work. - Just don’t allow yourself to become so self-deprecating that you freeze!
It’s okay to ask for help. - If you’re unsure of a trope, concept, fact or universe, reach out to your circle of friends. Chances are, they’ll be more than happy to help you because they want to see you succeed!
It’s okay to ignore criticism. - Constructive criticism is only constructive if it helps you. If someone says something that doesn’t assist or improve you in any way, then please feel free to ignore whatever nugget they are imparting, because chances are good they don’t have the best of intentions for you!
It’s okay to stop writing all together. - Your fans will miss you (and chances are good you have way more than you realize,) but sometimes, you just gotta do you!
It’s okay to write with whatever method works for you. - Long writing marathons where you bang out 12,000 words in one day? Great! Linear, dry style that means you occassionally get stuck because you can’t figure out this scene, but it’s all worth it in the end? Rad! Piecemeal work that you thread together at the end? Fabulous! As long as it works for you, there is no wrong way to write!
It’s okay to have fun. - I think this goes without saying, no? But it seems that sometimes, authors need permission. So consider this permission to wile the hell out, and enjoy the ride!
this is how it feels when someone draws something for you
