Loaded inside Lonzo’s BMW, Arielle immediately reached for the aux cord, Lonzo shaking his head at the fact that he hadn’t thought of that sooner. Whenever she was inside his car, she never failed to steal it from him.

“Alright, you can have it this time. Only because I haven’t you seen you in two weeks.” Lonzo reasoned, handing Arielle her gold wallet. Due to the rain, she sported a black rain coat, which covered a t-shirt and black Adidas sweatpants. Knowing they would be seen, she hoped Lonzo wouldn’t take her anywhere too elegant like he normally did when they went out to dinner.

“So I was thinking PF Changs?” Preparing to pull out of Arielle’s parking garage, Lonzo paused at the outing, looking over in the passenger seat to see Arielle purse her lips together in disbelief.

“Lonzo, I’m wearing sweats. You know good and well we can’t go in a place like that with me looking like I’m looking.” Arielle began to chuckle, Lonzo studying her with his foot on the breaks of his vehicle still.

“If you’re worried someone will see you, you’ve gotta get past that, baby girl. As long as you’re paying them for your meal, they don’t really care what you come in looking like.”

Always the voice of reason, Lonzo was.

At his words, Arielle slumped down in her seat, to the delight of a chuckling Lonzo.

“PF Changs, sweetheart?”

Despite all his prior reasoning, Arielle shook her head, pouting up at him in hopes that he would honor her following words.

“Can we go to the Yard House place? The Sports bar with the hamburgers?” Arielle shyly pleaded her words, a little shameful of the fact that she rather have a hamburger than the Chinese food that Lonzo had in mind. Yet, the speedy and simple nod of approval that Lonzo gave the woman diminished her nervousness.

“Anything for the Queen. I like a girl who keeps it simple.”

Nestled inside a booth of the Yard House, Arielle’s cartoon-like brown eyes rummaged through the single page laminated menu almost excitedly. Lonzo figured that she seemed to have forgotten about her previous worries that had to do with people judging her attire or simply noticing the pair. They had definitely caught more than a few pairs of eyes, but Arielle’s hunger overshadowed her heightened senses. Plus, others stared on at the pair because of who Lonzo was, not the attire they each sported.

“You had something to eat today, baby girl?”

At Lonzo’s words, Arielle hid her burning face of embarrassment behind the laminated menu. Her over-excitement about eating made the man across from her wonder, and reach the conclusion that she must not have touched food at all in the prior hours. She was a lover of food, as most were. Yet, he had never seen her so excited about a meal in their years of friendships. With minimal effort, Lonzo reached across the table, smirking at the woman who now had her head down on the table.

“I guess that answers my question. Get up, goofy, the waiter’s coming.”

“You still never explained to me why you chose not to go to Michigan State.”

As Lonzo queried, the pair had been in conversation for an hour and a half at this point. Their meals were long gone, as were their appetites. Yet, they still sat in conversation, each thread of words between them clearing Arielle’s clouded mind.

Lonzo stared directly at Arielle, wanting to catch her every initial emotion in her reaction. In their years of friendship, her true feelings sometimes became more and more noticeable via body language rather than what she would actually speak. And judging by how quickly she stopped sipping her water, Lonzo was certain that the subject was touchy for her.

Which would explain why they had never discussed it prior to this moment.

One day, she was calling him on the phone excitedly, gushing over her acceptance into her dream school and marveling at the fact that God had played such a hand in her ventures. The next he knew, she wasn’t mentioning branching off anyone, nor was she packing anything in her apartment.

“I think it was fear of acclimation. I have a nice life here in California and I’m not sure I’m ready to start over. At least not just yet.” As she concluded her words, Arielle exhaled a soft sigh, having felt a heavy weight lifted off her chest. She had been criticized by a few of her closer friends, which were already few in count, for trying so hard to get into the school but then not attending.

Many of them claimed it was because she was holding on to Lonzo, fearing that everything between them would end once his schedule picked up and she was consumed by work and class. And as Arielle looked at his concerned, blue eyes from across the table, she began to personally wonder if he had played a bigger role in her decision than she had believed.

Nevertheless, contradictory to Arielle herself, Lonzo believed every word she spoke. Whatever left Arielle’s lips was almost always certain. Her mind was filled with a million and one things, but she tended not to speak anything unless she was perfectly sure of it. So he thoroughly believed what she spoke was her most complete understanding of her own feelings.

“You should see the world, Arielle. You deserve it.” The words were hard for the man to get out, but he had done so with a certain ease. Never a man of many words, he simply got his point across.
