dear textbook authors,
the dude in front of the train has bigger problems than how the doppler effect changes the pitch of the train whistle.
he is standing directly in front of a moving train.
Cool Experiment!

savethesounds.info - âthe online âmuseum of endangered soundsâ preserves the endangered and extinct sounds of archaic technology.â
Created by Brendan Chilcutt, the site archives a few sounds that might have you nostalgically playing them over and over again. Thereâs everything from the sound of dialing a rotary telephone to the sound of a floppy drive chugging away. [âŚ] If nothing else, listening to the sound of a screeching modem kicking into high gear will make you eternally grateful for your 24 hour broadband connection, and not having to argue about getting off the Internet so your mother can make a phone call.

Petra Vargova. Sound Flowers (kinetic sound installation). 2007.
Installation view at the Hunt Kastner Artworks, Prague.Â
IVY NOISE
Installation
daniela di maro & roberto pugliese
Electric wires climb the white walls, following not a casual pattern, but a defined one, after an accurate study of the growth of the ivy. Black lines design organic forms; brances form which unusual flowers blossom: conical speakers of various dimensions. A previously defined soundscape is given forth by some of these peculiar buds which acts as a background to the acoustic improvisation, determined instead by the human presence. Every noise is being captured by a series of microphones and random samples are taken in real time by a custom designed software, and rendered back through the speakers. Voices, steps, movements, nourish the installation. The totally synthetic sound, generated by this technological parasite creates however the illusion of being in a natural environment.Â
This is how an electric Audi sounds on the road.

Listen here - A great art project by Nicola Hume who lets people listen into different locations.Â
After a visit to a local science museum www.mindstretchingfun.org we went home and started researching outdoor sound and music walls. We found some great ideas at Child Central Station and a very natural looking one at Soule Mama .
While not nearly as sturdy as the one at the science museum, nor as beautiful as Soule Mamaâs âBanging Wallâ hereâs what we came up with.
Another addition to the backyard loft!
âŚand the best part is itâs portable! A re-purposed pot rack, simply hung onto cup hooks, I can slip it right off and take it to school with me so my students can enjoy it, too! We even wired our wooden spoon and whisk âbangersâ right onto it so they canât migrate away :)
