Noelle found herself offering further distance between the pair as Jasper began to pace back and forth and despite doing the same, it only fuelled her agony as he too, pulled away. Her arms had enclosed around her waist, almost as if within physical attempts to hold herself together as she looked on through vulnerable hues. She understood that the revelation would be difficult for him to hear and whilst she knew that at the time, that choice was best for her, for their daughter – it didn’t make it hurt any less. Nor would that bring Jasper any kind of comfort, knowing he had a daughter that he would never meet, because of that choice. As he continued, Noelle found herself dumfounded by his response, her head shaking within disagreement as she protested, “it wasn’t your fault. I will never blame you for what happened, Jasper. I couldn’t. A witch did this to you. To us.”
Noelle’s voice was strained as she attempted to console him in any way that she could, although for now her attempts appeared within vain. A sharp breath hitched within the back of the blonde’s throat as Jasper grasped onto the chair for support, but just as she found herself reaching forwards for him, she ceased her movements as the words ‘you gave up our daughter’, cut through her like a blade. She stumbled backwards a step or two, each clumsy as she reached for the cabinet to lean against in attempts to steady herself, “please don’t – don’t say it like that.”
Her features were contorted within discomfort, tears threatening to spill from her hues, as her lower lip trembled viciously. “I had to give her a chance. I didn’t want her to know this life. I couldn’t have her grow up without her father. I couldn’t do that.” As her husband continued to determine that this was his fault, she found her hand raising as her digits prodded against her sternum and she cried, adding emphasis to her words, “it was my choice, for our daughter. Mine, Jasper. It wasn’t your fault.”
It was almost as if she hadn’t quite understood his words the first time. His involvement of Nic appeared to catch her off guard as her hand fell from her chest and reached for the cabinet once again. “You-“ Her words faltered and she felt as if all of the oxygen had been stripped from the room as a soft gasp urged from her lips, “you did what?” A soft sob fled her lungs, her trembling hand having risen to cup her mouth as she attempted to stifle the sound and she could feel the uncomfortable sensation of heated tears against her cheeks.
Before she could even muster a response, the chair had been thrown across the room, causing for her frame to jolt as she looked towards her husband, before forcing herself to enclose their distance. Her features had manipulated into a look of despair once again, her fists balling as she drove them into his chest, before flattening her palms as she pushed out against him in attempts to urge him backwards. “You bastard. You gave up, you gave up on us. I was going to find a way, I was going to find a way to save you. I just needed you to trust that.”
His revelation had caused for an uncomfortable sensation to stir within then pit of her stomach and suddenly, Nic’s avoidance of her now made complete sense. Her words were projected beneath fractured sobs, disbelief radiating from her as her tears continued, falling relentlessly with no apparent intention to cease. “Don’t do that to me. Don’t tell me you shouldn’t have come back. I can’t do this without you. We were supposed to fight this Jasper, we were supposed to save you, but instead - you left me. You left me alone. You left our children alone. We didn’t even get to say goodbye.” Her palms had continued to urge against his chest, until eventually ceasing as her head lowered and her sobs eventually began to soften, “you gave up on me.”
Knowing that his daughter was out there, somewhere away from her family, tore Jasper up inside. His greatest fear after the death of his father aside from losing his mother was the idea that he could one day lose the pack too and to know that his daughter was being raised away from her birth right, her place within the pack that was so well-knit that they all might as well have been just one giant family, killed him inside. As Noelle continued to protest his words, Jasper simply stod, shaking his head.
There would never be a moment in his life where he didn’t blame himself for what had happened. He should’ve known better, should’ve expected someone there to be a witch, it was New Orleans for Christ’s sake and if the Crescent’s knew anything it was that the witches were not to be trusted. Honestly, what had he expected to happen after a brawl in Rousseau’s? “Say it like what, Nel,” he questioned. “You did give her up. You gave up our flesh and blood. You had an entire pack here that would’ve been more than willing to help you, to take her even. Hell, Tara would’ve taken her in. Christ, does she even know?! Does she even know that you were pregnant?”
A scoff was quick to flee his lips, his hardened gaze landing on the blonde as he continued to shake his head. ‘I had to give her a chance’ rang through his mind as he attempted to hold back a dark chuckle that was building in his chest, the bewildered expression that was evident against his hardened features only showing a portion of what he was feeling. “Give her a chance,” he questioned rhetorically, the heat in his voice as it continued to rise into a heated whispered yell. “Didn’t want her to know this life? This life is who we are, Noelle. Our generation grew up the majority of us with one or both of our parent’s stuck in wolf form. Shit, your best friend had neither of her parents except for on the full moons for 19 years before they both died leaving her to raise her kid sister and you’re telling me that you couldn’t have my daughter, our daughter grow up with her family, with her pack because I wasn’t here?” Another scoff left his lips as his movements began and he once more found himself pacing the floor, hands rubbing at his features as he attempted to keep his composure.
AS his words registered in the blonde’s head, dark hues landed on her, the realization that she still to this day had no clue off how his untimely demisre occurred was evident to say the least as he gave a shake of his head, tearing his gaze from her as the tears began to stream down her features. He hadn’t known what to expect as the blonde approached, the despair evident against her features as her firsts balled at her side before he found they were being driven into his chest and all he could do was stand there and take it. The force with which her palms hit against his chest knocked him back a step, her words hitting him harder than her fists only fuelled the grief, guilt, and anger that twisted together within him, “I didn’t give up, Noelle,” he retorted, brows creasing. “Do you think the decision I made was easy?! You don’t think I knew what I was going to be leaving behind. You? The kids?! I did it for you guys, Nel! I had to protect you, protect them from me! I was a ticking time bomb and we both know it! I couldn’t put you guys in that kind of danger. If I had hurt any of you... I’d never be able to live with myself. I wasn’t you I didn’t trust, it was myself!”
Despair and anguish contorted across Jasper’s features with every word that fell from Noelle’s lips, her palms eventually ceasing in pounding against his chest as his hands rose to place against the side’s of the blonde’s shoulders as he shook his head. “I couldn’t say goodbye,” he admitted. “I wouldn’t have been able to go through with it if I had and I had to protect you and the kids, Ellie. I did what I had to do for your protection.” The sobs that racked his wife’s body only furthered his guilt, her final words tearing his heart to shreds within his chest as his arms wrapped tightly around the blonde’s frames. “No, baby, I didn’t give up on you,” he spoke, his voice softer now as he muttered into her blonde locks, a singlle hand rising to run through them. “I gave up on me, mi vida, not you.”
