Mel sighed, a gloved hand scratching the side of her head.Ā
"Yeah, but you get used to the smell after a while. Weāre kinda shoe-horned into this location because weāre pretty far from anywhere else. The transport units sometimes bring people in and take people out but most of the people here just learned to live with the idea that this is home."
She turned sideways to look down the rest of the street.Ā
"We just make sure to get to any traps before someone sets them off. The guys are like rats, the moment we show up they scatter, so finding them is pretty hard. We donāt have a jail or any way to get them arrested so we canāt really do anything. Although sometimes I can get one good hit in and I feel itās a job well done.
If youāre wanting to stay here until the next unit comes in, I suggest we go to the neutral zone. Theyāre not allowed there so itās the safest place to be.āĀ
ā This whole thing seems like a pretty fucking terrible situation if ya ask me.ā Emerald grunted. The Alpha Female crossed her arms over her chest, idly gnawing at the inside of her cheek with her pointed teeth. This whole world seemed just as screwed up as her own, just a lot less monsters running around. If anything, they seemed that there were just a few problems that could be easily fixed if someone did something other than disabling all these traps or whatever. ā Instead of going to the Neutral zone, do you want me to beat the hell out of these guys for you? Iām great at tracking and I can rip their throat out if necessary.Ā Would that make all this crazy shit stop?ā Emerald asked, a very serious look on her face. The wolf woman didnāt look angry, quite the contrary,Ā she looked dead set on taking care of the problems that this world seemed to be having. From her perspective, the faster she eliminated these guys, the faster she could get on her way and look for her sister.
Mel looked as if the question had never dawned on her, although it had. When viewed from a different perspective, getting rid of all the trouble makers did sound like it'd make future problems less of a threat. But somehow it didn't sit right.
She crossed her arms in thought, before waving a hand.Ā
"Nah. The entire lot of them is a whole can of worms no one really wants to open. Most of the time we're not sure how many of them there are anyway. Just let them work out their little frustrations and the rest of us are pretty much okay." She beamed, although their entire state of living wasn't something most people desired, she was content with it.
"Either way, I'm headed to the neutral zone to find something to eat. You're welcome to come along and wait for the next unit."Ā

Another transport vehicle had done it's job and the caravan was pulling out. Time to investigate anything new that had gotten off the trucks, besides trading goods. Mostly it was just new people, either stopping by waiting the transport to continue on it's way. Or for one reason or another just winding up here.Ā
It was their job to direct them to the safer locations of the city. Sitting atop the cabin of an old truck, she kicked her feet idly against the driver door with hollow thunks. She observed each passerby, but her attention was snagged by one who was...different.
"Welcome to Asphodel~." She greeted with a raised hand, still sitting on the truck.Ā
((Okay so I looked over my About Page and realized it didn't really have any information about Mel herself. How'd I go over a year with just that. Weh.
So I added more if any of you guys would like to know more about Mel quq))

Ow by the fang of my ancestors that was a decibel I did not want to hear today. Emerald rubbed her pointed ears with a wince at that small squeak. Some noises really did have an adverse effect on her ears. It explained while she was so disoriented when the bomb went off originally.
"I didnāt come from an escort truck," Emerald grumbled, still hearing a tiny ring in her ears from earlier. "Other than the slight obnoxious ringing, no. Why are those morons fighting for territory? Itās not like this city is worth fighting overā¦no offense." She really didnāt understand the point of fighting over teritory, the world was surely big enough for these āgroupsā to take out a territory elsewhere. Even when she was told of the great battles from the past, most of those were about reclaiming homelands and fighting off tyrany. Fighting for one sliver of land just seemed like too much of a hassle to her.
Least the wolfess was making conversation and not a chew toy out of her. Her tension eased enough that she stuck her hands into her pant pockets and balanced on the heels of her boots for a few seconds. If she didnāt come in an escort truck then howād she get here? She could have easily come alone, that wasnāt out of the ordinary. A long walk though.
She smiled at her questions and stood straight again. āIt doesnāt look like it now but this place used to be pretty. It was a perfect trade route in between the towns so there were a lot of people coming and going. Somewhere in all that delinquents started forming gangs and wanted to own parts of the city for themselves. Since then, I think theyāre still trying to overcome the other team. Ruined this city, thatās for sure.ā
She stretched her arms up, āBut someoneās gotta make sure they donāt ruin the whole place, thatās where I come in.āĀ
Emerald listened to the other girl carefully, blue eyes keeping contact with the other young woman. She could easily believe that this place used to be beautiful at one point but to hang onto it like this seemed a little counterproductive to her. That wasnāt to say Emerald didnāt understand the concept of home or the great feeling of loss when it was decimated, she just didnāt comprehend the idea of wanting to stay in a place that was so devastated by everything. āItās a noble cause I guess. Surprised people would stick around here this long, smells kinda dead if you ask me.ā Emerald observed sniffing at the air a little. The wolf woman wrinkled her nose in disgust, her face communicating the same feeling. āSo what do you need to do to make sure they donāt ruin it? ā
Mel sighed, a gloved hand scratching the side of her head.Ā

The supervision of the recent caravan of trucks had been going abysmally slow and boring. But it was a good way for the group to see who they should keep an eye on, if anyone new was in the transport unit anyway. Along with the two trucks of supplies, there were just a few small families, people passing through.Ā
Mel had been lingering a safe distance, hands clasped behind her head as she watched the people slowly walk into the neutral zone.
"Why anyone would wanna live here is a mystery to me." She thought aloud. "I say we get everyone on trucks and just leave the bozos fighting over the place."Ā
One of the men to her right grinned at her comment but made no reply. She was ready to leave, but there was one person who caught her eye. Not in an interested way, more of a 'okay I don't like the look in his eyes', way. It was an older gentlemen, but he didn't look frail like most of the others here. He looked like..a hunter. She was unsettled, but tried to keep a composed face. The last thing she needed was a hunter discovering wolves were in this city.Ā

The amount of tension built up within her entire body was the sole reason her reaction was a little exaggerated. When confronted with a wolf possibly the size of a vehicle, most people would not know how to react. As a wolf, she really didnāt know how to react. The resulting movement, after having been the target of a warning bark, was a combination of shielding her head and staggering back. Jammed between fight and flight, she was one heartbeat away from pulling the pistol from her belt and opening fire.
That would be a bad a idea for very obvious reasons. She remained huddled for a moment before realizing nothing else had happened. She was still alive. Good.
She straightened again, keeping her body still, though she trembled nervously with every breath.
Car sized or not, the wolf behaved similarly to others sheād come across.
"How the heck did you manage to slip through securityā¦" She muttered to herself. "Unless you took one of the back ways through the sewer systemā¦if you could fit. Honestly, youāre the size of a hummer, what have you been eating?" Ā Her wonderful habit of rambling when she was nervous.Ā
"Okay, thatās not important. What is important is that Iām not an enemy. Iām harmless unless given a reason to defend myself. My name is Mel, Iām one of the patrol guards of this town. Iām guessing you tripped a bomb back there and thatās what caught my attention. Can you talk, do you have a name?"
The wolf stood firm not even moving as she listened to the girlās explanation. She studied her body language carefully, oneās body being a lot more telling that words at least for her. That way she could at least tell if she was lying to her in any way. Judging by the way she was moving though, the other was more nervous than anything else. Emerald took a step to left and shifted back to her human form, all four limbs still on the ground, the transformation being over in just a blink of an eye. She went from a colossal wolf to a six feet tall, scarred, buff woman with wolven features.Ā āThe Nameās Emerald.ā The she-wolf growled out, her voice a little raspy from her time as a wolf. Not that it was much of a change from normal, in general Emeraldās voice was low and filled with gruffness. āMind telling me where I am and why there are bombs in this town?ā
Holy Hera, it's a female.Ā She was dumbfounded, the look probably very evident on the girl's face. Any wolf would have assumed the size to lead to a male of some breed. This was just alarming.Ā
Mel coughed and regained her composure quickly before she was caught being rude. She opened her mouth to reply but all that came out was a strained squeak. She was a little more unnerved than she realized. She coughed again and spoke as clearly as she could.
"You're in Asphodel. If you arrived with the escort trucks I'm surprised you weren't told somewhere along the way.Ā A city in the middle of nowhere, it's at least a day of driving to the next town.Ā
The bombs I mentioned are traps. The city's divided between three groups, two of which are constantly fighting for territory. They only recently set up bombs to catch unsuspecting rivals but more often than not citizens trip them off. They're in alleys, streets...dumpsters. It's a royal pain to find them before they go off. I take it you tripped off that other one back there. You weren't hurt or anything were you?"Ā

Ā The sounds of something within the building alerted Mel before anything visual stepped out. She kept a good distance between she and the building but that didnāt stop her heart from skipping a beat. Whatever she was looking at she wasnāt sure but her mind registered wolf. But not, at the same time. Maybe an alpha of some sort.Ā
This could be bad news if something that big was angry. She kept her hands out in the open but did not move. Even if she wanted to, the penetrating gaze of the wolf-thing kept her frozen.
"Uhā¦" She started dumbly. "..Hey?"
The wolf stared hard at the girl before her, not even moving a single muscle other than the occasional snarls that escaped from her jaws. Her fur was puffed out, her tail was straight out and her eyes, focused on the young woman before her.Ā The girl didnāt move however instead she justā¦greeted the beast that was staring her down. A harsh bark escaped Emeraldās throat at first, half expecting her to lunge or whip out a gun but when she didnāt, this gave the wolf pause. The alpha female closed her jaw and hid her massive teeth, but otherwise she didnāt move, still standing there as if this was her territory.Ā There was a certain amount of pride that Emerald held as an Alpha, even if she was one without a pack.Ā With a single questioning, echoing bark, Emerald questioned the girl. Not in the traditional sense, but the way she stood and the way she practically glaredĀ at the other girl expressed it enough.
The hell is she doing here? Why is she following me? If she tries to attack me Iām tearing her damn throat out. Emerald thought, not showing any signs of letting up.

If there was one thing Mel was good at, it was sniffing things out. Even when the air was bombarded with the scents of mold, dirt and other foul aromas. Once she locked onto one, nine times out of ten sheād be able to find the source.Ā
She wasnāt sure what scent to expect this time around though. Normally, gang members had the reek of alcohol and lack of proper bathing. This time, no such scent was in the area. But there was one, mixed in with the air.
Wolf.
Like a wolf, but not at the same time. This discovery caused her to stop running. She stood in the silence, which seemed more prominent after the sound of the explosion. She locked onto the scent and continued forward. The only conclusion she could reach was a wolf mix of some sort. It just wasnāt normal.Ā
The scent stopped in the middle of one of the building complexes. Not someplace she wanted to be as it was boarding the opposing gangās territory. Her boots were quiet as she walked, her ears at attention. The last thing she needed was to be jumped when she was already in danger.
Then she stopped. Several rats had fled from a building to her right. The only reason theyād do that is if they were startled. She stood in the road directly facing the building, trying to peer into the dim room from what she could see through the broken doorway.Ā
It didnāt take Emerald long to start to explore her surroundings. The she-wolf stalked around the building curiously, knowing that while she didnāt have much to explore, it was still something. She put her nose to the ground and tried to see if she could find any trace of food here only to find nothing. There was nothing here but the corpses or remains of the dead. The wolf wrinkled her nose, disgust clear on her muzzle, "The hell? Do humans without a home or a family just come here to die? This place sounds like a graveyard it tastes like one too.Man even the rats are too good for this shithole. Emerald thought with a grunt Colossal paws stepped on a human skull, it quickly crumbled to dust beneath her feet. Emerald let out a small sigh of dismay exiting the building with the horrible scent, the ratās scurried away from her in abject terror. As soon as she got out of the building she then noticed the person that just so happened to be in the road facing the building. It didnāt take long for the alien wolfās body to tense up, her tail shot straight up and her teeth were bared in a snarl.Ā Whenever anyone followed her, they were usually trouble, maybe resulting in capture. Even if this person sorta smelled like a wolf that didnāt matter. The last thing she needed right now was anyone, even if it was another wolf, preventing her from navigating through this world and finding her sister in this world or her own.
The sounds of something within the building alerted Mel before anything visual stepped out. She kept a good distance between she and the building but that didn't stop her heart from skipping a beat. Whatever she was looking at she wasn't sure but her mind registered wolf. But not, at the same time. Maybe an alpha of some sort.Ā

I'm not liking this, mused the she-wolf as she stood in human guise within the city street. Two hours ago she'd picked up on a scent that wasn't like any she'd known before. If darkness had a smell, this was it.Ā
With no one else in the patrol available, she regretfully took it upon herself to find the source of this smell. The sooner she could dispose of it, the sooner the stench would be gone. But with each passing step, she wanted to turn tail at run.
