This is who you should learn philosophy from.
This is who you should learn philosophy from.
it’s wild how tech literacy lasted like one generation barely before it fell off
The tech industry saw to it. In a drive to both expand their market by making it easier to pick up tech without knowing how it works, and in an effort to lock down controllable walled gardens and ecosystems they could fully control and exploit, tech has continuously and systemically destroyed both the need for tech literacy and the avenues for developing it independently.
You are not supposed to know how your devices work. You are not supposed to modify them without paying a service fee, you are not supposed to add functionality to them unless they sell it to you, and you are DEFINITELY not supposed to repair or reuse them when they could make you replace them at full price.
Tech literacy didn't die, it was slowly strangled out of people.
okay, but this is alongside a complete failure of the education system to provide tech literacy in K-12, under the presumption that "they'll learn at home". most kids, especially in poorer or rural areas, don't grow up with a desktop computer at home.
I teach computer science to blind high school students. I had a student a few years ago whose first exposure to a desktop OS was literally that year, across both my course and one provided by her school. the fact that we're waiting until kids are in high school before teaching them how to use a desktop OS, if they even take the class to begin with, is fucking bonkers.
we are doing kids a disservice by not training them how to use desktop computers as early as elementary school, as mandatory education in school.
I don't know exactly how to articulate this but... if you repeatedly show historical fiction women rejecting traditionally female skills/duties and doing swords instead, because swords is obviously the Most Important Thing, you are kind of implying that all the work that has been traditionally done by female hands for millennia was useless all along and not, you know, keeping civilization going. Because it's usually rejected not as a personal preference but as This Is The Important Stuff (male work) and That is The Dumb Useless Stuff (women's work) and that kind of bothers me. The message was supposed to be Vital But Underpaid and Underappreciated, not women's work is insignificant so let's all go do swords.
See also Avatar the Last Airbender, which also comes with a heaping helping of “only sexism would have you keep the childbearing-age women, who inherit the purely innate superpower, away from the genocide army”.
^and that healing is not as important a skill as fighting

Yes, this. A stunning number of people will default to "because it's illegal." Teaching an intro-level bioethics course will demonstrate real fucking fast that a lot of the population just lets legality stand in for morality.
Hey so that pic is AI (you can tell because, among other things, the paw prints make no sense)
It's also based of a real pic, so here's the original
Genuinely why would someone waste AI when the original is already perfect

Fish
You see. Because that's what fish normally do

I think we should do this but leave Colorado alone so there’s just an extremely jarring rectangle in one part of this
I like how you think.

Kids don’t have a little brother working in the coal mine, they don’t have a little sister coughing her lungs out in the looms of the big mill towns of the Northeast. Why? Because we organized; we broke the back of the sweatshops in this country; we have child labor laws. Those were not benevolent gifts from enlightened management. They were fought for, they were bled for, they were died for by working people, by people like us. Kids ought to know that. That’s why I sing these songs. That’s why I tell these stories, dammit. No root, no fruit! —Utah Phillips
I understand wanting to know who’s in your country and making sure someone plans on staying if they’re gonna vote but like why do you have to control how long I wanna hang out man come on
They should have a visa that lets you just stay as long as you want to like hang out
Yes I see you are not a murderer so congrats dude here’s the paper that lets you just like chill around here and do like whatever man just be cool aight
I’m a really chill guy and can be trusted around your salty snacks. I should be allowed in like wherever
I don’t think we’re rick rolling each other enough anymore. 1. it CANNOT die out 2. this under saturated market is perfect for unsuspecting victims who’ve been lulled into a false sense of security. be the person you hate. bring back the dastardly link
someone actually studied the falling Rick Roll rate for their Ph.D dissertation recently and published the paper
okay but this made me wonder if there was actually any academic literature on rickrolling and YES THERE IS this is a paper about rickrolling WITHIN academic literature. As in, studies that attempt to rickroll the people reading them. Best part is no one is going to believe me and click that link even though it’s 100% true.
My friend's book is mentioned in this paper!!
There is no earthy way of convincing anyone that the rickroll study link is real. But for what it's worth. It is
I'm so sad that the link wasn't a rickroll 😭 guess I have to read an academic paper now instead of listening to a fucking bop.

She drinks red bull I drink monster she's cheer captain and i am a lobster
was reminded of that youtube channel that records footage of that bridge that scalps trucks today. one of the fascinating developments that's happened since i last heard about it is that, in one of their many attempts to stop the trucks from being can-opened, they installed a traffic light that detects when a vehicle that's over the allowed height is coming and turns red so the driver can stop and hopefully notice the signage all around that's screaming "YOUR VEHICLE IS OVERHEIGHT TURN AROUND" and avoid an accident. However as a result sometimes drivers see the light turning yellow and IMMEDIATELY start flooring it to avoid having to stop, ensuring that the roof of their truck just gets fucking annihilated instantly. Really beautiful stuff you should check it out
the comments have me in tears
@rogue-bard
It DOES have a sign. It turns on when it detects something too tall for the bridge. It even flashes. And the traffic lights will go red to get people to stop when it detects an over height vehicle so they read the signs. (note this lovely example where the lights are red, because the truck thought it was better than the lights)
every time I see this post I've forgotten how clearly signposted the canopener bridge is, and every time it hits me like a truck (hitting the canopener bridge and getting the top of its trailer ripped asunder)
