CHAPTER PREVIEW FROM WHAT THE LIVING CANNOT KEEP:
"You're still you," he said softly.
Hermione's breath trembled faintly.
"This does not get to take that from you."
Something cracked visibly across her face then.
"You hear me?" he continued quietly, voice tightening now around emotion he was fighting violently to keep controlled. "You do not lose yourself because of what he did to you. That is not how this ends."
His thumb brushed gently through the tears still clinging beneath one eye.
"Hermione," he whispered softly, like the name itself mattered. "Do you know what your name means?"
Her breathing shook unevenly against him.
"Messenger. Bridge between worlds." His thumb brushed beneath her eye gently. "You were never made for darkness. You were made to lead people out of it."
He moved his finger along her cheek.
"The brightest witch of your age," he whispered.
"The person who keeps everyone else alive even after they stop deserving it."
Hermione's breathing stuttered unevenly.
"You survived impossible magic," Draco continued softly. "You survived me. You survived this war trying to turn you cruel."
A breath.
"One moment does not rewrite who you are."
Another.
"You do not become him because you survived him."
Hermione's mouth trembled suddenly.
Draco tucked one damp curl carefully behind her ear.
"Golden girl," he whispered, the nickname so devastatingly familiar it nearly undid her completely.
Her eyes focused slightly more.
"Founder of S.P.E.W," he murmured gently, and Blaise actually looked away then because he physically could not survive hearing Draco say it like that. "You knitted hats for house-elves who never even knew your name."
"You're the girl who looked at me and still found something worth saving."
Hermione's breathing finally cracked.
A sound so small and wounded it felt like hearing something break apart internally.
"You loved your parents enough to let them forget you."
Draco rested his forehead fully against hers then.
"Little lion," he murmured, forehead against hers.
"This," he whispered fiercely, "does not define you."
The corridor had gone utterly silent around them now, even Theo had stopped crying just to listen.
Draco's grip never loosened.
"Ma dorée," he said softly, voice fraying now around the edges despite everything he was doing to hold it together for her. "Stay with me, love."
Hermione shut her eyes hard and suddenly tears spilled all over again.
Draco didn't move away.
"And if you need to break," he whispered, "then break."
Closer still.
"But come back to me afterward."

The Dark Lord has risen.
Harry Potter is gone.
And Hermione Granger has disappeared into the heart of Voldemort’s regime.
Forced deep within the enemy’s inner circle, Hermione survives through lies, performance, and increasingly unforgivable choices. Every day inside the Manor demands another piece of herself, and the longer the war drags on, the harder it becomes to remember who she was before it.
But survival was never going to be the most dangerous part.
Not when Draco Malfoy watches her like he’s trying not to lose something that was never his to begin with.
Not when Theodore Nott loves her with the kind of quiet devotion that turns fatal in wartime.
And not when whispers begin to spread that Harry Potter may not be dead at all.
As alliances fracture and old magic begins to awaken beneath the ruins of the war, Hermione finds herself trapped between duty, grief, and two boys who would burn the world down differently for her.
Because some love stories are not meant to survive.
And by the end of it, loving her may be the thing that destroys them all.
