“In 2022, New Mexico recorded the largest forest fire on record, the Hermits Peak Fire. The fire burned over 341,000 acres over a period of five months. The fire started during a forest service prescribed burn. New Mexico and many western states are experiencing some of the worst drought seasons on record due to climate change, contributing to increasing wildfires. Disasters depicts a pyrocumulonibus cloud, a massive anvil shaped storm cloud created by smoke and intense heat from fire, a volcanic eruption, or nuclear explosion. This series depicts the could in different states of growth over the course of a day. Clouds have symbolically been sacred to the Hopi and Tewa people; they provide rain and life to our arid climate. We have ceremonies tied specifically to cloud and rain dances to provide a cyclical balance. The cloud in this work represents the change in our planet and a shift of balance. Each image and coloration are unique and explore the Air Quality Index color chart to dictate the color palette.” -Namingha

This drawing portrays members of a nineteenth-century Osage delegation that traveled to Washington, DC. Most such tribal delegations were pressing the federal government to uphold their land and treaty rights. Poignantly, Pappan drew this image on paper used to record a real estate transaction.
