But seriously guys. Use SOME lube, PLEASE, even if itâs only spit. USE SOMETHING. Actually, correction: USE LUBE. Donât use some random substance your characters find lying around (like crisco or blood or lotion) because a lot of them should probably not be applied to the interior of the anus. Use spit, actual lubricant, or maybeâMAYBEâolive oil (though I only mention that because it apparently used to be a common practice in ye olden days⌠I cannot, however, speak to its validity in current times).Â
Considering that we do administer mineral oil enemas, olive oil should be safe. ; b
Also, if your characters are using condoms, oil-based or petroleum-based lubricants can alter the condom composition and cause it to break (so forget the olive oil in that case).
Some silicone-based lubricants arenât safe for use with latex, either. So you have to be careful and read the label (in case of RL applications)âŚ
Basically, for anal sex:
Use water-based, oil-based, petroleum-based, or silicon-based lubricants. Olive oil, canola oil, mineral oil, petroleum jelly (Vaseline) should be fine, too.
With condoms, steer clear of olive oil, Vaseline and the likes.Â
Only use water-based or silicon-based (certified safe for latex) with condoms (I know fanfiction doesnât usually elaborate on the type of lubricant used, but in case some people want to use these informations for RL purposes, better safe than sorry!).
SpitâŚÂ Unless people tell me they have personal experience with using spit and itâs comfortable for themâŚÂ I donât knowâŚÂ Youâd have to be able to spit an awful lot and - like with water-based lubricant - if thereâs not enough it can tend to âdry outâ (or be absorbed), and wonât last really long. Youâll have to either keep adding some all of the time, or have the characters be pretty close to coming.
The problem with lotion is that it is meant to be absorbed by the skin / tissues. And the rectal lining is very VERY absorbent. This is one of the reasons why many people prefer silicon-based or oil-based lubricants for anal intercourse; because they do not get absorbed by the tissues.
Plus, unless its a very neutral lotion, there can be perfumes in there and other chemical irritants that can get absorbed by the tissues and cause reactionsâŚ
So lotion is an extremely poor choice.
And please, PLEASE do not put any shampoo, ice cream, or other stuff in there!
Re: spit. I do actually have personal experience with spit as lubricant. Spit is actually, believe it or not, naturally lubricating. (It contains a family of glycoproteins specifically designed to make it a bit slippery) Itâs not nearly as lubricating as, say, the secretions of the bulbourethral gland (also known as the Cowperâs gland) but it still works. This is because one of spitâs functionsâaside from getting your good wet, providing a liquid medium for flavonoids to reach your taste chemoreceptors, and beginning the breakdown of complex starches (specifically amylase)âis to lubricate the bolus of food you swallow so that it doesnât scratch your esophagus on the way down. So, yeah. Spit works. Like you said, you do need quite a bit of it, and it does dry out faster than bottled lubes, but it works nonetheless. Also, it can be rather fun to use, since, yâknow, the method of application is basically spitting, blowjob, and/or rimming. Plus it avoids the âlubeâ taste that effectively cuts off such activities if you donât like it. But, yes, you do run the risk of injury with spit, as, again, itâs not as lubricating, and it does âdry upâ within about 5-10 minutes. Thankfully, though, reapplication is easy, and it takes a while for a person to run out of supply ;-)
Re: different types of lube. Specifically, silicone-based. One thing I noticed you didnât mention is use of silicone-based lube with toys. I feel this is important to mention for real-life purposes because it can be extremely dangerous. So, to emphasize: do not use silicone-based lube with toys. It will degrade and/or melt the toy. Imagine, if you will, your silicone vibrator dissolving inside of you. Itâs not necessarily that dramatic, but the big concern is that small, microscopic sections of the toy will be melted away, leaving a very pockmarked surface that is a breeding ground for bacteria. Which, then, upon subsequent use, can lead to an infection. These pockmarks are especially bad because, since they are potentially quite sequestered, they make it nearly impossible to definitively sanitize the toy without putting it through an autoclave. (And I know how many of you have an autoclave just lying around in your home⌠That is to say, almost none of you xD)
In summary:
Do not attempt anal sex (most of these are not all suitable for vaginal intercourse) without:
Water-based*, oil-based, petroleum-based, or silicon-based lubricants that were designed for such purposes.
Good quality olive, mineral, canola oils; or âVaselineâ (petroleum jelly) can be acceptable.
Spit can work (thanks for offering some valuable insight on that method.  : D I shall now stop wincing when I see characters using spit as lubricant in stories), but may increase the risk of injury, so you have to remember to be extra careful, and add some regularly.
*Note: Be extra generous with water-based lubricants, and donât be afraid to add more if necessary. The water has a tendency to be absorbed by the (extra absorbent) rectal lining, and therefore âdries outâ faster than other types of lubricants. Adding spit in that case might also reactivate it.
If you plan on using condoms (recommended, unless partners have agreed to be sexually exclusive):
No silicon-based lubricants unless they are specifically marked as safe for use with condoms.
No oil-based or petroleum-based lubricants.
Meaning no olive, mineral, canola oils or âVaselineâ (petroleum jelly), either.
In short, play it safe: Stick to water-based or âsafe for use with condomsâ silicon-based lubricants (or spit).
If you plan on using toys:
ONLY USE WATER-BASE LUBRICANTS.Â
Unless they are glass sex toys. These are great! You can put them in the dishwasher, or boiling water to sanitize themâŚÂ I think some of them are also microwave safeâŚÂ Very easy to clean stuff!
