What I find very interesting about Flambae, as a character, is the way he subtly subverts the expectations others have of him.
He's an asshole. He supports his friends. He pursues success so hard he's willing to cheat openly. He never sabotages anyone. He’s vengeful. He calls Mecha Man a hero regardless. He almost dies after being locked up in a sensory deprivation tank and never blames anybody. He’s confident. Trees make him insecure. He has no idea how to be kind to people. He likes helping others. He wanted to die as a villain. He wants to live as a hero. He likes who Flambae is. He never talks about Chad.
I think Flambae is exactly who he says he is, and exactly who he thinks he isn't.
Flambert road trip AU, post Mecha Man reveal, but make it soft angsty.
It’s been a few months. The schedule is split. Robert carries what he can, then carries more.
He expected several things from Flambae. Distance wasn’t one of them.
There’s still quips. There’s still banter. There’s still that grinning snarkiness Robert came to look forward to.
But only around the team. Almost like they have to do it. Maybe for them, or themselves.
And when he gets into the elevator with Flambae, he realises it’s been so long since they were alone, he has no idea how to act.
“I can hear your pulse,” Flambae has that end-of-shift rasp to his tone, eyes ahead and tired. “Chill out. I’m not gonna kill you.”
“…Not right now, or?”
“It’s not funny, Robert.”
“Right.” Robert doesn’t know why he keeps talking. Maybe he just doesn’t want to let silence win. “So… Two weeks off. Any plans?”
Flambae’s eyelashes blink at him, question all over those smoked gold eyes. “What the fuck do you mean? We’re going to Miami. “
“Miami?”
“Yeah? BB’s gonna drive her mom van. Prism has a playlist for everybody. Vic’s gonna eat in my fucking car, because he knows I can’t say no to him. We go every year. Didn’t those assholes let you know?”
They didn’t.
And they both understand why. The practicality behind it.
Robert says it’s fine.
Flambae says he’s going. If he wants to. And only then.
And Robert, to his own surprise? Really, really does.
It’s fine.
He owns 10 pair of jeans and shirts that look identical to his work uniform. It’s fine.
He spent half his salary on thrift stores. It’s fine.
He googles ‘road trip tips’. It’s fine.
Flambae and the others pick him up at 6. He loads Robert’s bags in Mandy’s car without question. Robert can’t quite stop himself from staring.
“I didn’t know your hair was curly.”
And Flambae’s shoulders raise and drop, securing the luggage safely. “No powers on the trip. No gel.”
“Looks good. It suits you.”
And as it turns out, Mandy’s car is conveniently full. So is Prism’s. So is everyone else’s.
And Flambae rolls his eyes, and looks at Robert almost like he’s apologising. “You can have the car and I can fly. Whatever you want.”
Robert wants them to go together.
There’s a certain tranquility, in the way Flambae drives. Like him and the road have this mutual understanding neither will betray the other.
That used to be him and the sky, Robert thinks.
“So. Why Miami?”
Flambae always has this eternal gentleness, when he speaks of his father.
“My dad and I used to travel a lot, when I was young. Miami was my favorite. He bought me a vacation home there, for my 30th birthday. It was my turn to pick this year, so.”
“Wow,” Robert teases, “Don’t pull a muscle with that flex.”
And Flambae scoffs a laugh, brief but honest.
“Well. It was supposed to be my last one. He went all out, I guess.”
For the remaining mile, neither of them speak again.
They all stop at a motel, and the staff knows them all by name. Prism is the one who explains they bunk.
Two people. One room. Cheaper.
Robert doesn’t even get to open his mouth before Flambae tosses the room key his way, back retreating to his car, despite Prism’s groans.
And Robert doesn’t know why he calls after him. He just knows his chest throbs with this strange, sweet warmth.
“You know, I don’t have cooties!”
It grows when Flambae calls back without glancing back.
“I’ve seen your 7 in 1!”
It grows when Robert watches that annoying, arrogant, cocky, infuriating meteor of a man sleep in his car, just so Robert can have his own room.
And he has a feeling it’ll keep growing till Miami.
#ok this was getting too long BUT JUST KNOW #the moment flambae’s face brightens up and he exclaims ‘ bob-bob!’ with so much excitement #Robert melts so hard it's embarrassing #‘why didn't you tell me you'd be gone? I came to your apartment and your shampoo was gone. I thought someone kidnapped you.’ #‘you noticed I was gone???’ #TLDR: robert makes very sure to let flambae know he ALWAYS notices when he's around. and he always likes it. #and NO mission gets done unfortunately. that's just a honeymoon atp #flambae’s yearning sometimes being their main relationship issue is very funny to me

Flambae isn’t sure if he’s doing this ‘friends’ with benefits thing right.
Especially not with Robert.
They’re not particularly skilled at having friends to begin with, let alone the kind who make out in dusty file rooms.
“OH MY GOD! BOB-BOB, THIS IS TERRIBLE!”
Robert’s hands immediately leave Flambae’s thighs, checking him over instead, touching vitals like he’s been built to.
“What?! What, what’s wrong?!”
“Sorry, I was looking at my file,” His lips curl in a displeased arch. “Why is my fucking curl doing that?”
“God, you’re so—,”
Robert buries his nose in the curve of his shoulders and laughs.
Which is weird, because he’s been doing it a lot more since they started this thing.
Flambae doesn’t have a problem with it, — Robert laughs like someone who finally can— but he isn’t sure if that’s the main objective here.
Neither Is making him lunch and labelling it, but here he is.
But the truly bizarre part happens in the morning.
Always his place, because he refuses to ride Robert on the bare ground.
It’s when Flambae’s eyes flutter open, rested, warmth spreading from scalp to chest, Robert’s handprints still pulsing on his waist—
A waist still being hugged by two arms.
But the morning’s still pale, so all Flambae can do is fake a displeased sound, voice still buzzing with sleep, turning so his arms wrap around Robert, too.
“Bob Bob, wake up,” he mumbles into sweet brown hair, catching notes of mint. A shampoo he recommended. “You forgot to leave. Again.”
He gets unintelligible gibberish in return. Which isn’t surprising. His bed must be paradise for the guy.
“And you forgot to kick me out. Again.”
And yeah. Flambae did.
They both agreed to it. In by night. Out by day.
It’s not until they have this conversation on comms do they consider it’s worth having a talk:
“Flambae, that’s the third time this week you skipped R&R. Babe, your heart is gonna collapse.”
“Azizam, is this OUR heart attack?!”
…Neither of them were supposed to say that.
Needless the say, the Z team has no idea who won the ‘who’s gonna drop the pet name’ bet.

I want to expand and make more stuff for this AU 👀 I've had this idea for a longgg time now, and since everyone's making their own AU versions of Flambert, I decided to join in but make it...really sad.
Also 08/20 is Flambae's birthday which is why I made him Prototype 0820. You can also think of it as Robert's 820th attempt at recreating Flambae.
Writing a time-travel AU where Robert and Chad get transported to a future where they meet older, happily married versions of themselves.
Older! Flambae’s powers are different, with bright, blue and white flames because of an accident that involved him needing to burn hotter to save Robert and it sort of ‘unlocked’ his full-potential.
Robert lost a leg in the accident, and is fully retired from being Mecha Man and has Blonde Blazers job as head of the Torrance branch of SDN (I like to think she’s happily married and retired early)
Just…having a lot of thoughts about Blue Flame! Flambae and domestic married Flambert 🥺🫶🏻
