Russian Tea Cakes
Another Christmas favorite, almost identical to Almond Crescents save for shape and nut. Like the Linzer Cookies, the choice of nut is largely up to you.
Ingredients:
2 c flour
1 tsp vanilla
1 c soft butter
1/2 c powdered sugar
1 tsp salt
3/4 c finely chopped nuts (almond, walnut or hazelnut is common)
Steps:
Preheat oven to 350° F and lay out ungreased cookie sheets
Cream butter and powdered sugar
Add flour, salt and vanilla
Mix in nuts
Roll dough into small balls and bake for 15 minutes
Roll in powdered sugar once while still warm
Once cool, roll in powdered sugar until as coated as desired

Linzer Cookies
Another Christmas tradition in my family, these cookies are more flavorful than many commercial Christmas cookies, but not as spicy as gingerbread cookies. They do require a specialized cookie cutter (or some of those really small cookie cutters) for the top layers.
Ingredients:
1 1/4 c butter (2 1/2 sticks)
1/2 tsp salt
1 c sugar
2 eggs
2 c ground nuts (I used hazelnuts, almonds and walnuts but there's no hard and fast rule)
2 tbsp cocoa powder
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1/8 tsp cloves
3 c flour
Instructions:
Cream butter and sugar, add eggs one at a time.
In a separate bowl, mix nuts and spices. Add to creamed stuff.
Add flour slowly and carefully.
Chill dough at least 45 minutes.
Roll 1/4 inch thick, cut bottoms and tops making sure you have an equal number of each.
Bake at 350°F for 10-15 minutes.
Once cool, dust top cookies with powdered sugar.
Flip bottom cookies over and spread with a very thin layer of jam.
Gently press top layers on to make sandwiches.
Eat and enjoy; or, for even better results, store in a box for a few days before eating.
A few notes:
Raspberry jam is traditional, but it's really up to you and the flavors you want. Nutella has become popular. I used raspberry and orange marmalade.
Keep the dough cool to the touch while you're rolling and cutting. If it gets too warm, it will start to disintegrate.
If using the specialized cutter, make sure to clean out the shape insert every few cookies. How often will depend on the shape, but if it gets too full of dough it will not make the shape properly.
Ginger Newts
Because I am an unashamed nerd, and because my wonderful grandma got me a lizard cookie cutter for Christmas without asking questions (and then sent it to me early with a note reading "Open At Once!!!"), I spent a good part of Christmas Eve making a first attempt at replicating Professor McGonagall's Ginger Newts.
The recipe I used was written up by my other grandma, who was a phenomenal cook. It seems to have been designed more towards gingerbread men/houses instead of the chewier Ginger Newts I've seen online, but they hold their shape well and can be as gingery (tee hee) as one wishes.
Here's the recipe, with my notes in parentheses:
Mix together in a saucepan:
2/3 c brown sugar
2/3 c molasses (I only had about half a cup, but they seem to have turned out alright anyway)
1 tsp ginger (or more, or less)
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp cloves
1/2 tsp salt
Mix and bring to a low boil.
Add:
3/4 tsp baking soda
2/3 c butter (10 2/3 tablespoons)
Stir until butter is melted. Remove from heat and pour into mixing bowl.
Then stir in:
1 egg
5 c flour (I'd recommend going one cup at a time so you don't get flour everywhere)
Knead until dough is smooth. Chill. Roll thin, cut and bake. 325 F 8-10 minutes. Very crisp when cooled.
Oceans centered world map.
You know, even though I grew up knowing it was possible to around circumnavigate the world via the ocean, I had never seen it from this way before. Holy shit.
I love this cause it really puts in to perspective how big the Pacific Ocean is
Pigeon steals poppies from the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Australian War Memorial, Canberra, Australia in order to build a nest beside a stained glass window.
@birdblogwhichisforbirds
@snitling EXACTLY
This is two pigeons, pigeons nest in bonded pairs (notice the first one is checked and its mate on the nest is barred). Usually they don’t make nests nearly so big but I guess if you have the materials, go for it.
The nest is so unusually big because the vast majority is a platform to keep the actual nest (just that tiny ring in the corner around the bird sitting in it) cushioned from the anti bird spikes.
This is a work of beautiful defiance.
Using the very thing installed to make just a moment’s rest impossible as structural supports for an immovably stable nursery.
The symbolism achieved by these pigeons is better than some writers can hope for and I love it!
From the nest on the bird repellent spikes to the fact that those spikes are along the stained glass windows of a church, a place associated with sanctuary and compassion. The fact that the nest is made of stolen poppies for remembrance day hits the hardest though. Of the 54 animals to be awarded the Dickin Medal for acts of gallantry during WW2, 32 of them were pigeons. These were messengers who flew through battlefields and across borders, many of whom were killed or severely injured by enemy forces including gunfire and trained falcons. Many of their achievements saved the lives of hundreds of soldiers, and yet now their descendants are faces with anti-bird spikes, shooting and poisoning in an attempt to rid the cities from the rats with wings. I love this picture because it feels like they’re taking back just a little bit of that credit owed to them.
Reblogging for this beautiful addition.
I literally can’t get myself to sit through movies that don’t have women. I’m like where the fuck are the women? Why are there so many men? This is boring as fuck goodbye
Even if it’s historically accurate?
as everyone knows, women were invented in 1990
All the notes of “women weren’t on old time battlefields” are wrong. There were more prostitutes and merchant women than there were soldiers in most every encampment. They followed the armies, marching alongside them, and notably ran the camps.
Many more women dressed as men to fight.
Long before female nurses were officially considered to be a part of the military, they were already on the battlefield. They merely didn’t get written into official reports because they were “invisible women”, “not supposed to be there”. Usually they would be local women running a makeshift care center out of their homes.
Movies involving ancient societies? Guess how many had female fighters?
Spies? Mostly female. Yeah, only the men were caught, usually (because nobody suspected the servant woman), but historians believe most cases had more women spies than men. Most cases meaning across time and continents.
Giving me a movie on samurai? Women were trained as well to avoid being captured and raped, and often fought just as hard as men. One woman notably survived multiple battles, and became a hero alongside her sisters after taking out 7 men before dying in her last fight (usually in sword fighting you’d be lucky to take out 2 enemy soldiers. 7 is fucking insane, but because she was a woman it was shoved under the records how the lord managed to survive).
Women have ALWAYS been on battlefields. Women have an intense history in driving victories and losses alike. They were supply runners, fighters, spies, assassins, prostitutes (look up how prostitutes essentially ran the western world, or even the social status of harem members. They literally fucking ruled), even underground activists.
The only time there weren’t many women were with cowboys. Actual western cowboys tended to be both POC and gay. In fact, any time women didn’t have a near equal or greater presence, there was a LOT of gay men.
History: either 80% female or 100% gay. And it’s 95% POC.

A dating service where matching is based on people’s search history exists. You’re a serial killer. You go on a date with a writer.
Serial Killer: metaphorically, if you were to kill someone, how would you do it?
Writer: Air shot between the toes, it’ll look like a heart attack.
Serial Killer who is obviously in love already: *sucks in a breath* ok
Writer: how long would it take to die if you were to potentially stab someone in the guts
Serial killer: anywhere from 2 to 30 minutes
Writer, already bringing a ring out: *shaking* thanks
A++ addition
Writer: *shows the serial killer the murder scene they’re writing* babe, i’m not sure if this would actually work?
Serial killer: *kisses writer on the forehead and leaves, comes back later, a suspicious scent of blood coming off them* it works baby, you’re doing great
I LOVE THIS
Oh no, murder comedy is my jam
I love this, I love all of this, but quick question, does the author know? Like are they aware that their significant other is a serial killer or do they just think that they have a morbid sense of humor? It’d be even funnier if the author had no fucking clue, like how Aurthur Conan Doyle was apparently stupidly gullible, and on top of it they’re a horror or crime novelist. Like the serial killer works at a butcher shop or something so it’s completely normal for them to come home smelling like blood, no murders going on here, no sirey. Just my darling coming back home from a long day at work.
Now fast forward a bit and the author has managed to get their first book published, with loving support from the serial killer who helped them fine tune all the murder scenes, and it’s a big hit. Enough so that a detective with the local police department has noticed some disturbing similarities to several active cases, including details that were never released to the press. Obviously he brings this up to his superior and convinces him that there’s something to the theory, but it’s all circumstantial right now. He stakes out the author’s home and is super convinced that the author is the murderer, but they don’t seem to do anything??? Like they literally are at the house all day, that’s it. Most they do is leave for groceries.
So you get this dynamic of the serial killer mining the author for creative murder schemes, the author being lovingly encouraged by the serial killer, and finally the detective who is just so sure that the author is the killer and that if he sticks it out long enough he’ll FINALLY have proof.
Plot twist, The serial killer and detective use to go out so it gets sub what personal.
“You need to stop seeing them. I think they are a serial killer.”
Serial killer breaths in. “Look-”
…perfect
I don’t like actual murder mysteries, but this is perfect
Chocolate Chip Sour Cream Muffins
I found this recipe ages ago, bookmarked it and then found it again the other day. It seemed a good way to both use up the leftover sour cream and have something yummy for tea, so I gave it a try this afternoon.
