Prickly Pear Cactus
I found a prickly pear fruit on the ground while walking around town, so I decided to see if I can grow my own from seed.
I cut the fruit in half, and extracted ~36 seeds from the fruit. I rinsed them off and rubbed them all with a paper towel to remove the pulp from the fruit. I let most of them dry off, but I decided to try to grow a few of them now and see if I have any luck.
I soaked 5 of the seeds overnight, and then filled 5 pots with cactus soil. I moistened the soil, pressed the seeds down just under the surface, and covered the containers with saran wrap. For 2 of the seeds, I rubbed them on a file to break the surface a little bit, one of the articles I read suggested sanding the seeds, so that was my half assed attempt because I didn’t feel like going in the basement to get sandpaper.
I’ll put the remaining dry seeds in some zip-lock bags and see if they keep til the spring.
