You can try the demo or support the game on Kickstarter here!
Continuing where we left off, the demo has expanded. The characters now have playable stories, and you can pick who you wanna play as.
During San Japan, earlier in the year, I had a great and very much needed opportunity to have a game booth there, which allowed me to get feedback and see how others played the demo. It was very eye-openingβin a good way.
Feedback was great, constructive. It really raised my spirits and motivated me π
Even though certain gameplay and presentation aspects didn't have complaints, there were things I realized I needed to change.
β Remember the card selection screen?
If you played v1, you probably interacted with the card selection at the end of the quiz.
I thought it looked real cool and was a more unique way to select characters, also doubling as an unlocking mechanic. I, honestly, didn't want to change/remove it. I loved the visuals (+ the amount of time and work it took to set up), but something was really bothering me about itβlike it was a bit convoluted? Too many screens maybe? So many steps just to pick a character and start the story.
If you played v2, you'll notice all of this is gone.
Why?
Although the new layout is simplified and some content was cut, all the important info was retained. You're just going through a lot less screens now.
Yeah, we could argue which version is cooler, and was the change really needed? Opinions will vary; I can only go with my gut π
Devlog #1: Why and how do you fail a personality quiz??
Let's talk about the demo~
β οΈGameplay spoilers ahead. There are some secrets to be revealed.
π The Personality Quiz π
When I initially decided that I wanted to make Eastwynne into a game, I knew it would take a bit before there would be any kinda public playable demo. I figured making a minigame would be the way to go, bonus points if I could have something playable at the booths during the conventions I participate in.
A personality quiz seemed like a perfect idea. It's quick (or so I thought), and it's a good way to build investment into the charactersβthink "Which character are you?".
I wanted the quiz to be lore-accurate in multiple aspects; not only do the answers relate to the characters' personalities and habits, but also how magic works in the universe. That's why it's also called the "Specialization Quiz", meaning magic subclasses.
β Question: When you played, did you answer according to your own personality?
If yes, I don't blame you. It makes sense, that's how it should've worked, I would've done the same. I'm also guessing that you failed the quiz?
Here's how the quiz actually works: You're supposed to pick the answers that match the selected character. So, currently, that would be Ester.
In previous patches, it did kinda operate like a regular personality quiz, but you still had to pick the correct answers. Whatever answer you picked for the first question locked you into a specialization/character, and the rest of the answers had to match.
The quiz is meant to be a challenge. After watching y'all play, I realized it can be too much of a challenge, requiring prior knowledge of the lore, which ain't even public yet so... π
I did try to give y'all hints, though:
Answers follow a theme and are connected to each other. For example, those involving time, being laid back, and living in the moment. Or the ones about keeping to yourself, going invisible, and not wanting to say much.
If you played on Easy or Normal, did anyone notice that sometimes hovering/selecting different choices will trigger a sound effect and a visual cue of the correct answer?
As someone who will quickly go to a wiki to get the answers to ingame puzzles, I got y'all. I will find ways to give hints, and Eastwynne also has a wiki π with guides π
Remember me saying it's quick? As in, the quiz would be quick to play and develop?
It was supposed to be.
Originally, this would've only been the quiz; the end showing what character you matched with, and dat's it. But noooooo, I had to go beyond that. I wanted this to be more, especially since magic utility orbs are cool, and I could build upon that. That's a potential storyline right there.
