Hiking to the Aarbiwak on the Finsteraargletscher, Switzerland. This long hike into a remote corner of Switzerland feels more like being in the Himalaya than the Alps. The trek takes you up a long, gradual glacier to a dead-end cirque beneath a towering wall of ice and stone. There sits the Aarbiwak, a small, unwardened hut deep in the Alps. With huge glacial scars, erosion and shrinking glaciers, the area is a sharp reminder of how rapidly the glaciers are disappearing. The south of France is famous for its limestone sport routes, but nearby Annot has made a name for itself for trad climbing reminiscient of Indian Creek. No bolts, lots of parallel sided cracks, and great rock. For those not wanting to climb cracks, Annot has also become one of France’s top bouldering destinations.
