“Oh, come on now, that’s not as exciting!” Meg exclaimed with an exaggerated pout and roll of her eyes at the redheaded woman across from her.  “You’d outsmarted both the king of a small country and the greatest detective in all of England!  You could have become a famous female highwayman or… if Maid Marian became Robin Hood, or perhaps even a great detective yourself!  But then you had to settle down and become a singer instead…” She shook her head and tutted, but there was a still a smile on her face.  Even as anticlimactic as Irene’s story sounded toward the end, she couldn’t quite begrudge her that life—if it was good enough for her best friend in the world, it was good enough for anyone.

     The card sent up on the silver platter was very simple, just an engraved name with a rather fine address added in the corner, and it reinforced the message sent with it. Lady Mycroft Holmes was calling upon Miss Irene Adler, in person, in the hopes of have a brief, quiet discussion. Standing in the entryway of the home, waiting for the return of the servant that would either indicate she could go up and be received or that she was being turned away as Miss Adler was ‘not home’, Mycroft didn’t remove her hat or gloves; a clear indication that she had no intention of staying longer than the polite twenty minutes.
