This reads at first like a vow of revenge, but considering that the “gift” she gave him is the crown, Cardan literally repaid it in kind. 

-Cardan being pressured into marrying Nicasia (or anyone else for that matter)

-Jude returns to Elfhame

-Cardan greets her with something along the lines of “Well, wife, it’s been a while”.

-Everyone is shocked and confused because he just called JUDE his WIFE.

-And Cardan will oh-so-casually turn to everyone and be like

Oh my god. 

I think I know WHY Cardan exiled Jude!!! 

Outside of the obvious: revenge (for being tricked and for his brother), remember when Jude says:

“Marriage is unusual amongst the rulers of Faerie because once a ruler one remains a ruler until death” 

AND 

“should Cardan marry I wouldn’t just have to get him off the throne to get Oak on it, I’d have to remove his bride as well”. 

Both of which makes me think: is Jude Cardan’s insurance policy against the rogue murderous Madoc? If Cardan is murdered, Jude (who is safely away in the mortal world) will ensure Madoc cannot have power. She will still rule.  And their marriage vows back this up: “until the crown passes from our hands” the key word is OUR, meaning they both rule.
