As someone who has dealt with depression for years, I can confirm this is incredibly good advice.
just so you know, daniel harmon is an autistic writer, producer, and voice actor. itās incredibly important that we donāt erase autistic creators; all of this is also important, but erasure is a huge problem and itās so so vital for autistic kids to see (mentally ill and multifaceted) autistic adult creators and know thatās what they can grow up to be.

Why is this so accurateā¦
Little things that help moods:
- getting enough sunshine - opening the curtains - eating regular meals - short walks with your favourite music - donāt stay up until 3am - donāt try to relate to tumblr text posts - get off tumblr/social media if itās unhealthy - shower - donāt stay in bed the whole day - plan out your day - listen to music - change your clothes - set yourself small goals - say yes to fun events - drink water, it takes 5 seconds - talk to a close friend - remind yourself: a bad mood can lie to you - youāre not unwanted or hopeless - you deserve love so be nice to yourself

ok can we agree that the WORST feeling is when youāre just sitting around consciously procrastinating and youāre just overly aware that each second that passes is more time wasted and you like watch hours pass and youāre STILL procrastinating and you CANT STOP and your panicked brain is trapped inside a body that refuses to be productive and inside youāreĀ screaming but outwardly youāre just eating chipsĀ
sounds like executive dysfunction to me
switching to new thing is harder than continuing to do previous low-effort thing, which is frequently compounded by new thing being more difficult/less fun/more important (thus having more associated fear of failure) and thus harder to start at all
Okay but I get that a lot and now Iām worried I have that thing and that actually so would explain a lot
Executive dysfunction is a symptom, not a diagnosis in its own right. ASD and ADHD are among the most common causes, and clinical depression is either also a common cause or has a very similar thing going on, I forget whether the inability to motivate yourself to Actually Do The Thing that comes with depression is technically the same thing but āI want to do the thing but I canāt make myself actually carry it outā is a well-documented depression symptom either way.
yeah, depression and anxiety can cause executive dysfunction too. basically anything that stresses your limbic system can do it. which includes Just Having A Fucking Rotten Day.
iām not a neuroscientist, so take this with a grain of salt, but my understanding is that there is a chemical switch that lets you turn the idea of Doing Thing into actually Doing Thing, and when certain brain chemicals are depleted by limbic stress, it can quit working right.
itās kind of like youāve formatted Do Thing beautifully on your computer, youāve got the PDF all ready to go, but when you hit āprintā you get an out of paper error. you canāt fix that on the computer because the problem isnāt on the computer, itās on the printer.
you canāt fix the Actually Do Thing switch from the willpower department, because itās not a willpower problem. itās more like a hand-eye coordination or sensory problem. itās not accessible to the conscious mind. all you can do in the short term is rest and ask for help. in the long term you can organize things so your life isnāt so hard on the brain chemicals. if itās because of a mental illness or neurological disability, medication can help. if itās just from regular stress, you may have to do something like quit a stressful job or kick out an asshole roommate, whatever it is thatās making you so exhausted.
cognitive behavioral therapy is helpful in all those circumstances. itās just a fancy name for troubleshooting your life with a qualified brain mechanic. hard work but SO effective.
the thing that never ever helps is beating yourself up for having a broken Do switch. that makes it worse. donāt do that.
