Lee Marvin
While on a photographic assignment for McCalls in 1969, Milton H Greene took this color image of action star Lee Marvin sitting on a beach preparing to do some fishing.
1990 Grammy Legend Award Winner Liza Minnelli and 2001 Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award Winner Sammy Davis Jr. scheduled a joint performance in Miami, Florida, 1976 and Milton was there to get it on film. This image was one of many promos taken at the Diplomat Hotel in preparation for the upcoming event, which heralded $100-$250 ticket prices per person.
"We were introduced to Sammy in 1953. We were deep, deep friends until his death. He became an every day part of our lives. We did everything together.”

Marilyn Monroe's My Story: Korean Serenade
Japan turned out to be another country I never saw. An Army officer came up to our seat in the airplane as we were approaching Japan. He was General Christenberry. After introducing himself, he asked, “How would you like to entertain the soldiers in Korea?”
"I’d like to,” my husband answered, “but I don’t think I’ll have time this trip.”
“I wasn’t asking you,” the General said. “My inquiry was directed at your wife.”
“She can do anything she wants,” said Joe. “It’s her honeymoon.”
He grinned at me and added, “Go ahead.”
Joe stayed in Tokyo, and I went to Korea. My first stop was in a hospital full of wounded soldiers. I sang some songs including one called, “Do It Again.”
The soldiers were wonderful. They cheered and applauded as if they were having a good time. Everybody loved everything I did except the officer in charge of my Korean tour. He took me aside and told me I would have to change my material...

Marilyn Monroe Recipe For Fame
There are three different ways of becoming famous in the movies. The first way more often happens to men than to women. It happens suddenly as the result of a single performance in a movie. An actor will go along getting jobs and doing good work and getting nowhere. Then all of a sudden, like John Garfield long ago or Kirk Douglas, Marlon Brando, Jose Ferrer, more recently—he will appear as a lead in a picture and wake up after the reviews as star for the rest of his life. Occasionally this also happens to an actress, but the occasions haven’t been recent. The actress usually becomes a star in two other ways. The first way is the Studio Buildup. When the Front Office is convinced that one of their contract players has star possibilities in her, a big campaign is started. The Star Possibility is surrounded by various teachers and coaches. Word is sent out to all the Producers in the Studio that the Possibility is the biggest coming box-office attraction in the industry. And all the producers in the studio start fighting to get her as the lead for one of their pictures.

The Ballerina Sitting Story
"The first Christmas Marilyn spent with us, I thought it would be nice to get her some Anne Klein clothes. I went to Ben, told him what I wanted and he sent over six outfits. When it arrived, I put a big ribbon on the box without opening it. Christmas day, I gave the box to Marilyn. She was like a squealing child; each dress was heaven. She especially liked the white ballerina dress with an under slip. Two separate pieces. “Milton, you have to photograph me in this,” she said. The following week, we all went to New York, her hair and makeup was done and now it came time to slip into the famous ballerina dress. Marilyn wasn’t fat; but she wasn’t what I would describe as trim. She was on a perpetual diet, drinking one glass of wine at dinner. There was no bloat, just that the damn dress was a size too small. My mistake!

Amy Greene on Marilyn Monroe's death
“Everyone that meets me always asks the same questions: Q 1) What was Marilyn really like? Q 2) Do I think she was murdered or committed suicide? A 1) She was fine. She was one of us. Marilyn was full energy and she loved being who she was. She liked being a movie star. Actually, she relished being a movie star. Marilyn never tired of the public or they of her. There must have been some kind of radar going back and forth.
A 2) Milton and I believe in our hearts that it was an accident. She took the wrong combination at the wrong time. We had spoken to her from Paris, where Milton again was filming another collection for Life. They made a date to meet in 10 days. Marilyn sounded strong, happy, confident, energetic and she was looking forward to seeing him and working together again. I remember her saying to him, “Old friends are the best friends, now don’t forget me!” There was no way that the day after this conversation she would have deliberately taken her own life.” Amy Greene Read more stories from our book But That’s Another Story by Amy & Joshua Greene

Diahann Carroll, New York City 1959
"Fortunately in my youth I had the joy of working with the brilliant Milton Greene. He added such vitality and beauty to his work, which greatly influenced me for the rest of my life. I just had my baby and went to the studio wearing this fitted yellow jacket. I came out of the dressing room wearing a bustier, tights and heels. Milton would love to experiment and try things. He looked at me and noticed that I was still a little pudgy from baby. He looked at the color background and told me to go put on the jacket I was wearing. Being a pupil in the presence of a master, I put it on and Viola! It was perfect.
One night he and Joe picked me up to go to a party in Los Angeles. He looked at what I was wearing and said... read more at our blog
