nothing safe is worth the drive

the most interesting thing about deltarune to me has always been the conflict between kris and the Soul. every time the player makes a choice or presses a key we are violating kris's autonomy and right to self-determination. ik all the krusielle talk is fun and it's not an invalid reading of the text but I also thought it was pretty overt that kris's whole deal with Susie is, really, about kris's lack of autonomy. kris isn't just, like, jealous that they're not in the polycule, they're being tortured by the player who knows all of their emotional weaknesses and doesn't care. we confiscate kris's voice for ourselves and force them to say things that they do everything in their power to resist. the Soul knows how kris feels (about all people involved, about themself, about us) but forces kris to sabotage their own desires, so we the Soul can achieve OUR goal of getting Susie and noelle together. Susie represents kris's longing for freedom and self-expression and self-determination, and by isolating kris from Susie we're also denying all of those things from kris.
