Took this photo before I left for Thailand as part of an ongoing project to photograph my food & drink creations more. This is a clarified milk punch that is loosely based on the Jerry Thomas 1862 recipe but with a few of my own twists, including the color.

When the Captain ventured into the Swamps of the Dark God in search of a rumored treasure, he emerged with a cask full of sinister elixir but his crew was nowhere to be found. Legend has it he sacrificed his shipmates in exchange for the potion and was forever haunted by their ghosts. Imbibing the potion supposedly lets the Captain see around corners but summons more dead sailors each time. Sounds spooky but he says it’s not so bad. Chicken & wild rice soup garnished with fresh dill and fried garlic chili oil. Whenever I use a recipe I have to put my own twist on it—in this case working in some duck fat and using chicken stock instead of water. Hit me up if you want the recipe!

I want to meet whoever made these

Watching the sunset from the top of Haleakalā (10,000 ft) was amazing, but what really blew my mind was sticking around until everyone cleared out and watching the stars. I’ve never felt closer to space before — you can see the Milky Way with the naked eye — or seen stars with such clarity. It’s commonly clouded over so I feel lucky to have caught a clear night. #pineapplepilgrimage
