Sometimes I get desperately wound up in my emotions about (my personal theory that) the reason the OFA story is so vague is Hikage—both his abundance of caution, his intentional choices, and the state of his brain after years and years alone. And when I say emotions I mean emotions, plural—huge ones, positive ones, sad ones. On the one hand: how little of the story made it through. On the other hand: he made sure the story made it through.
It's something that is proving REALLY hard for me to fic as I sit here trying to fic it. But like–
A vision of Banjo and Hikage interactions in which Hikage never does explain to Banjo why he's deathly afraid of going to a hospital, or why he thinks "no I mean maybe it's just that I didn't train hard enough, I really think trying harder tomorrow might make this better," and never does feel like it's safe enough to tell Banjo his own predecessor's name. And at the end of it Banjo is left with just enough pieces to go.
