I work with kids and sometimes we have to do safety lessons with them about like, not telling strangers on the internet your home address or something. And sometimes the kids wont understand why, so you have to impart upon them that, well, some adults want to hurt children. And thats kind of difficult to do, because you have to beat around the bush, both because you dont want to scare them (while still making them understand how serious it is) and because you might lose your job if you explain it too straight forward.
Luckily, for some reason, the villain of one of the most popular franchises with children for the last 10 years happens to be a serial child murderer. So when a kid asks why they shouldnt trust strangers, instead of hand wringing and humhawing my answer out, I can just say "we dont always know when a strange adult has good intentions with children, or when they are William Afton."

you know those studies showing that cursing helps with pain tolerance or whatever. that’s how i feel about making my weird little noises to get through my basic daily activities. sometimes you just have to go hggblaaaah for a minute so you can find the strength within yourself to get up or wash the dishes or send an email. mmmnneh. urgh. the torments are unending but you can always make some little sounds about it.
personally I'm annoyed by the socioeconomic conditions that made words like "unalive" necessary but simultaneously impressed by the linguistic adaptations young people have made to continue talking about important things while subject to those conditions and I think if you can't hold both of those thoughts in your head you might just be old man yelling at cloud

I tried briefly to explain to the 10-year-old that they didn't have to do that in real life after they said "unalive" out loud in casual conversation, and they just said they preferred to. it's not unprecedented in the evolution of languages to see euphemisms adopted as synonyms or even supplanting earlier terms. lots of people say "passed away" even in situations where there would be no particular social cost to saying "died".
for a particularly strong version of this kind of replacement: the word "bear" comes from a proto-Germanic word meaning "brown one" because there was a taboo against saying the animal's actual name. the taboo is gone but it was so strong in the past that we have no record of what the proto-Germanic word for "bear" even was.
maybe in 300 years the word "die" will be archaic and kids will dig it out of an etymology textbook and start using it because "unalive" is getting censored.
die has actually already undergone this process. die originally meant "flow" (i guess it's like you're flowing out of life or something? or maybe your life is flowing out of you idk). it was (probably) loaned from old norse to displace the now obsolete "swelt". and yes, that is the root word of "sweltering"
Okay okay okay I give so what I actually was doing when the Lux comic went down today for 'maintenance' was... updating Every single page to have the Doctor's new design! I had a vision of what he was really meant to look like, and I just couldn't let it stay the way it was- so I have been working every single day to replace, update and generally improve the Doc's face throughout this entire comic for months and now it's all finished! I updated every page so that it's a clean complete 4 dimensional sweep! I'm exhausted. And very happy.
If you've never read this comic before, now's a very good time, and if you have, perhaps it's a good time to reread it from the start! There's no other big changes (one or two luxes got a small tweak or two) but I am so much happier with how he looks, and I hope you are too!

the amount of leftists who uncritically support the DSM-5—wielding it online in battles against random individuals who might be “faking” a disorder—boggles my fucking mind. you guys realize that the DSM-5 isn’t the only diagnostic manual on the planet, right? you realize that we place it at the top of the global hierarchy because it’s american, right? has it occurred to you that the APA shouldn’t have so much authority over what counts as a “real” mental illness? has it occurred to you that perhaps there are other diagnostic manuals? in fact, there are dimensional models that don’t rely on sorting individuals into “disorder/no disorder” boxes in the first place. food for thought, lmao
They keep refusing to add CPTSD to the DSM. Even though the research consistently supports that it is a real, distinct disorder, requiring a different treatment approach from other, superficially similar diagnoses.
Judith Herman first proposed CPTSD in fucking 1988.
The ICD recognizes it, by the way. But the APA clowns in charge of the DSM continue to stick their fingers in their ears and go la la la about it.
See, the DSM is fundamentally part of the American healthcare system. It's been shaped by the demands of a for-profit industry and the necessity of dealing with insurance companies to get anybody treated. So!! For the past couple of months, I have been working on a plushie of Assok, from @modmad's wonderful webcomic The Property of Hate :D
I hadn't used felt to make a plush since I was a kid, and this project took a lot of work, time and efforts, but I'm extremely proud of how it turned out. Very much a labour of love :'>
Special shout-out to @sharoo, who crocheted the little Assok sock on the trunk for me!
I started it around mid-April and we're almost mid-July, so this project took just about three months to complete– although most of the last one was spent waiting for the little crochet Assok to arrive, augh. The package spent 25 days in transit why.
The pattern was made by Voynart on etsy, though I altered it quite a bit to make it resemble Assok more.

After modifying the pattern I had bought I made two rounds of testing (one with just the paper pieces and another out of cheap felt) to check if it all fit together okay! This took two weeks iirc? I only had a limited amount of wool felt and I wanted to make the plushie as big as possible, so I didn't have a lot of room for errors once I got going
The head! (plus one of the paws, I was testing appliqué stitches)
I made it first, because it was the most important part and I wanted to make sure I got it right
The body! I made all the paws different because they're not always the same colour in the webcomic (check pages 619, 620 and 637, for example!); likewise, I didn't use exactly the same thread colour on both sides of the body. I really enjoyed the fact that you can embrace visible stitches when working with felt, it's not something I did with my previous plushies :>
Fun fact: as I was sewing on the dark purple pieces on Assokaphant’s front legs, I had to use pliers to force the needle through both pieces of felt plus stuffing, and I managed to break the needle fdshgfds
BUT THEN I ran into A Problem: sock too big for they trunk. Of course I could've put it in the washing machine until it shrank, but, you know, I was afraid it would take a while...
THANKFULLY Sharoo came to my rescue and made a perfectly-sized Assok for me!! It's adorable aaa I'm so glad. Couldn't have done it myself, truly the cherry on top
