[Spoilers ahead, obviously]

So, at the beginning, during the Trust Balls Incident™, we can see Orange and Green being thrown behind one of the crates, with a small alien following right after them. It's here where they either die or become infected, it's not entirely clear which one happens, but I'm leaning more to them dying immediately and the aliens basically puppeteering their corpses. This is also supported by Orange saying they love salt, right at the start of the episode— this proves that they started out as crewmates.

As for why Green didn't remember Purple's story, it's because Green prompted Purple to start talking so they could take the opportunity to slip out of their body to go kill Cyan in electrical (they were sitting on a vent during that scene).

Okay. Just so I’m getting this right. I am confused on the lore.

The alien-imposters were NOT always aliens. The crewmates that the aliens TOOK THE BODIES OF had lives and stuff before that. The Orange and Green aliens were likely hiding on the ship for a while after hatching, waiting for victims, before separately taking over Orange and Green and taking control of their bodies. They specifically did NOT hatch the eggs until way later because they enjoyed killing to begin with and didn’t want little baby competition. Like Black said, these aliens can take upon the memories and voices and lives and whatever of their victims, but it’s a little bit shabby, hence Green not remembering Purple’s story.
