2012 turtles and my fav duo
I really enjoy looking at Donatello's characterisation - especially the 2012 version of Donnie.
I don't know why, but something specifically about the 2012 iteration of our favourite brothers draws me to them. Maybe it's because I think they have the most interesting and unhealthy brother dynamic to explore out of any version of the Turtles. But just to say right off the bat, I don't agree with the statement that Raphael is abusive toward Mikey in this version. I don't think this to be true at all.
But in the 2012 version of Donnie, I think it's the obsessional aspect of his character that I find interesting. People flame him hard for it - which is very valid - the way he treated April was very creepy, and some of the things he did April had no knowledge of, (Like Donnie taking a photo of her and having it as his laptop wallpaper). But I like doing a little more when it comes to characters' less-than-ideal traits. Yeah, what they're doing is bad, creepy, etc. But why exactly might they be acting that way?
For Donnie, I think his problem is how he looks.
In the 2012 iteration, we never really see the turtles have a strong desire to be human. Mikey sometimes doesn't understand that humans will be scared of him, but he never lashes out and has a big moment like, 'I want to be a human so I can make more friends!' We see Mikey wonder what he'd look like as a human in an episode after Donnie creates retromutagen - with Mikey assuming if he used retromutagen on himself he'd turn human and not back into a regular turtle.
It is played as a joke, though, and he doesn't seem genuinely upset by the fact he's stuck as a turtle, as he is seen smiling after saying he wondered what he'd look like.
Interestingly enough, Donnie is the one to be portrayed as having a negative view attached to being a mutant more than any of his brothers.
Outside of being a mutant, it is implied that Donnie already has a fragile self-image anyway.
Remember the episode Turtle Temper? I think it's the third episode of the first season. But at one point, the other turtles are instructed to shoot arrows at Raph, while Raph has to try and avoid the arrows. Splinter makes it clear, however, that Mikey, Leo, and Donnie are allowed to insult Raphael during the exercise.
I've seen another content creator say that the insults they throw at Raphael could be more them self-projecting views they have on themselves rather than them actually thinking these things about their brother. Leo says, 'And you're always whining, poor me, nobody understands me.'
While this is easily applicable to Raph as an insult from Leo - Leo does have his own fair share of moments where he has gone to Splinter complaining that the others aren't listening to him or respecting him, that they don't understand the burden he has to hold as leader.
Mikey tells Raph he moves like a bloated buffalo - which, although never hinted at in the show, could imply that maybe Mikey is insecure about how much he eats. Maybe his brothers have made comments about his greediness.
Donnie says, 'Oh! You can't keep your back straight during Omote kote Gyaku! And you're ugly!'
I think the first part is interesting as Donnie is the tallest out of his brothers - gangly limbs could mean Donnie has more difficulty knowing how to stand, how to sit, so on so forth. A lot of tall people can feel really awkward as a result of their height.
Donnie most likely is sat over a desk all day, and again, being tall, Donnie has more of a slouched posture out of his brothers. I think it was Karai that also insults Donnie in an episode by calling him scrawny, in which he responds, 'And I'm not scrawny! I'm svelte!' Svelte meaning slender and elegant.
Raph has also insulted Donnie's looks before in an episode, and again, it is unclear if this is a common occurrence, but knowing 2012 Raph's character, it's probably happened on more than one occasion.
Donnie : And why do you keep grabbing me by the face? What is wrong with my face?!
Raph: Do you want me to list the reasons alphabetically or in descending order of grossness?
So regardless of being mutated or not, it seems Donnie just has a generalised lack of confidence and some issues surrounding how tall he is.
But to his issues regarding being mutated.
Donnie might've previously not had any issues with being a mutant. Before, it might've been just a general lack of confidence, as I have already said. But in society, looks are always seen as a good trait to possess if you want to have any shot at a love life. You need to fit into the beauty standards and be attractive if you want a partner.
Before April, his brothers would've been the only thing to compare himself to. He lived in a home with only mutants for fifteen years of his life - so had normal teenager issues of going through puberty and insecurities. A lot of people can feel odd/uncomfortable and dislike their growth spurts, which is why Donnie's issues at first might seem like normal things for a teenager to worry about. Donnie's biggest issue would've been how scrawny and lanky he saw himself.
But when they meet April, there is a glaring difference.
Suddenly, there is somebody in his life who isn't a mutant like him. It becomes abundantly clear to Donnie that from somebody else's standpoint, their biggest issue with him wouldn't be his tooth gap or his height, but just the plain fact that he's so different. Inhuman. Out of the ordinary. A mutant.
When he's rambling to Timothy (Mutagen Man at this point) about why April might be on a date with some punk kid (Casey) the conclusion he resorts to is, 'Because he's human, that's why.'
At the end of the episode A Foot Too Big, when Donnie apologises to April, he says, 'I'm just... a mutant.' Again, this shows Donnie jumps to the conclusion that this is why April doesn't want to be with him, not his overbearing nature or the fact that she just genuinely might not be interested. The problem in Donnie's mind is that he's mutated.
The fact that Donnie used the word 'just' implies that being a mutant is all that Donnie has boiled himself down to. He thinks that his other traits aren't worthwhile or good - like him being funny, smart, inventive - because he thinks that nobody would pay attention to those aspects of his personality. At the end of the day, he thinks nobody will be able to see him outside of being a monster.
In Fungus Humungous, the hallucination of April that Donnie experiences calls him an 'ugly mutant freak'. It is unlikely April actually thinks this of Donnie, but it's what Donnie thinks she does because it's his biggest fear. I'd like to split Donnie's hallucination into two parts. April insulting Donnie about being a mutant, and Donnie's hallucination of April kissing Casey.
We see April kissing Casey. I think the fact that this part of the hallucination comes second is meant to represent this fear of rejection and insecurity surrounding being a mutant are two sides of the same coin. His fear of April choosing Casey is a by-product of his main insecurity. We are shown April calling Donnie an 'ugly mutant freak' first. Donnie isn't afraid to lose April as a person to Casey. He's afraid of losing his only hope at feeling confident to Casey.
In the first half of the hallucination, it shows that April uses a sharp tongue like a whip.
This tongue is shown to go through Donnie's heart and subsequently breaks it.
"To have a sharp tongue" means to be quick to criticize, speak harshly, or make cutting remarks; essentially, someone who is often unkind or sarcastic with their words.
I think this represents that, over anything, it is April's words that break his heart more than her actions. It is her disgust at him being a mutant that shatters him. It's what makes him crack in the episode. He starts screaming, runs away, and shouts that he, 'doesn't want to hear anymore.' This is Donnie's breaking point. Her sharp tongue and words, over her actions like kissing Casey, that is Donnie's true biggest fear.
Donnie doesn't want to be with April purely because he loves her. To Donnie, it would be more than April simply making a choice on who to partner up with. It would be confirmation for Donnie that the issue all along was because he's a mutant.
The point I'm trying to make is that Donnie is more obsessed with trying to improve his own self-image than he is obsessed with April as a person.
He wants to use April as a means to prove someone could love him despite appearances because, as I said earlier, looks are important to a lot of people. Gaining a romantic partner would most likely grant Donnie the confidence, the consolidation that he 'isn't ugly after all' because someone managed to fall in love with him. That is why he so desperately chases after April.
He chases after the feeling of confidence.
His character kills me.
I know I’ve said this before, but 2012 Mikey developing an unhealthy dependency and attachment to his brothers will always be the superior angst/whump plot.
2012 Mikey is missing his father so much that he latches on to his brothers, especially Leo who is now shoved into the “head of the family” role? Perfect. Wonderful. Absolutely fantastic plot point.

my grandparents have to lock their car doors when they go to sunday mass because people have been breaking in to unlocked cars and leaving entire piles of zucchini
i feel like i should’ve added more context when i posted this. my grandparents live in a rural area where farmers and casual gardeners alike are, at this point in the year, suddenly being hit with unexpectedly abundant zucchini crops. there aren’t just some random vandals leaving zucchinis in people’s cars for the hell of it, this is the work of some very exasperated, probably very elderly, folks who have more zucchini than they know what to do with
Yep. You can also expect to find a bag of zucchini on your porch.
My grandfather once found his neighbor stealing his tomatoes out of his garden at three in the morning. Red-handed, with a basket of the nearly-ripened ones. He thought he was going to find gophers or something, but no, here’s Henry, taking his tomatoes. The best ones.
There was a long pause between them.
My grandfather (allegedly) said, “Henry… it’s OK. You can take some tomatoes if you want them.”
Henry sighed in relief.
“But,” my grandfather said, “you have to take two zucchini for every tomato.”
There was another long silence. “That’s a harsh bargain, John,” said Henry. “But I accept. I’ll tell Joe up the street, too.”
My grandfather said, “Tell Joe he needs to take three.”
a friend of my dad’s came by in the middle of the night, he seemed very nervous when my dad answered the door. he wouldn’t come inside but he leaned in and whispered to my dad in spanish, “i have some fresh grapes for you.” and then this happened:
the melon was a special bonus.
MY DREAM
A friend of mine lives in a rural area and he has been surrounded by zucchini for most of May, June, and July.
At one point he was so done with the whole zucchini madness that he came to classes actively begging people to “Please please please!! Take some my family’s damned zucchini!! I’ve been eating zucchini for weeks!! I’m going insane!!!”
Having grown up in a rural area and having come home to zucchini on the front step or in the mailbox, i find it highly amusing the OP had to clarify. I’m sitting here nodding “yup.”
I have a friend with a garden in Oregon who literally made Zucchini Chocolate Chip Cookies and sent them to me in Indiana. I texted her back “I SEE WHAT YOU’RE DOING HERE”
I’m waiting for the day when someone will hear about my background in Botany and ask me for advice on what someone who’s just wanting to start exploring planting vegetables should try.
I know fuckall about gardening because my background is wild plants and not agriculture, but I’m gonna tell them
“Zucchini. Definitely try Zucchini. Just plant plenty of them and you’ll get a decent sized crop! They’re very rewarding to grow.”
It may be a bit of a long game, but I’ll enjoy their screams of despair from across the void as they realize that they will eat zucchini forever
This is NOT an exaggeration, guys. Zucchini (and most squashes, really) will outgrow you so fast. Let our tale be a caution– or an encouragement, whichever. You decide as you hear the story of Squish.
When we were so broke we had to choose between gas and store-bought-food (I think I was about 10?), we had a garden so we could eat regularly (we also had chickens and pigs and hunted, but that’s beside this point). One summer, we planted 6 rows of yellow squash and 6 rows of zucchini. Each row probably had 10, maybe 12 plants in it. We created this giant squash-block in our garden plot so it was all right there together in the middle, and the needier plants like tomatoes were on the outside of the whole plot. We thought we were clever, til the first crop started coming in.
The outside two rows of each squash, yellow and zucchini, were normal. High yield, of course (because squash), but standard size for both summer squash and Italian zucchini. The inner 8 rows, however, created this hybrid monstrosity that we called Squish. It was pretty– a nice swirly yellow and green combination that made it clear the squash and zucchini had interbred.
Squish became a living nightmare for us. Something about the hybridization caused them to forget how to stop growing, or at least how to grow at a normal rate because those suckers were longer than my dad’s forearm, and bigger around than my (albeit child-sized) thighs. They didn’t get all hard and nasty on the inside, either, for some reason, like most squash will at that size. And they just kept coming. I don’t even remember seeing that many flowers, but every day we were pulling upwards of 20lbs of Squish out of the garden, only for there to be more the next day, or sometimes by the end of the day if we harvested in the morning. I don’t know where they were hiding, but it was like some sort of squash portal had opened into our yard and started crapping out Frankenstein’s Squashes.
At first, it was great. We could eat all we wanted and not worry about rationing it. But the growing season in Arkansas is long, and we had incredible weather that summer, so those darn things kept alternating flowers and fruit. Pull off a few Squish, new flowers budded out, and they ripened super-fast in the heat. We were absolutely swimming in Squish, because they were so big that even gorging on them meant only 1 or 2 got eaten per meal. (I think I recall using a few particularly enormous ones as swords for a duel with my sister, if that says anything about their size. I cannot overemphasize how absolutely, heinously gigantic they were. You probably don’t believe me but I am not kidding. Those things were bigger than a newborn by several many inches and a couple pounds.)
We had (luckily) a big deep freezer, and someone gifted us a bunch of freezer ziploc bags, so we started chopping them up and freezing them as we pulled them off. We ran out of bags real fast, so we caved and bought a ton more. We filled that deep freezer near to bursting. It was probably 3-4 feet deep, (as I remember barely coming up to the edge of it), and at least 4-5 feet long, about 2.5 feet across, and we filled it to the top with Squish. And that’s while we’re eating fresh ones every day with dinner! But still more Squish came before the first frost, so we started packing the fridge. And my grandma’s freezer. And my grandma’s fridge. And feeding them to the pigs and chickens. And giving them away at church.
Do you realize how big a deal it is that people who were so broke that they had to choose between gas and the power bill were GIVING AWAY FOOD??? That’s how much gosh darn Squish we had. And little did I know, but apparently, my dad HATES squash. He only planted them because they were a cheap, quick source of food and my mom loved squashes. And he got stuck with the folly of his decisions. For over a year.
Yep. We had Squish in the freezer for over a year. Eating it regularly. It lasted for over a year. A family of 5, plus often feeding my grandmother, we ate off a single garden’s haul for over a year. Of just the Squish. I tell you, if we’d had a farmer’s market back then, that Squish could probably have single-handedly lifted us out of poverty. Well, maybe not, but you get the idea.
We never planted both again, probably because my dad would have combusted out of rage if he’d ever seen another Squish in his life. But man those were the days for thems of us what loved squash.
So survival tip: If you need an absolute crapton of food, plant you a row of yellow squash and a row of zucchini, and keep that pattern going for as many rows as you like. You too can drown in Squish and love it.
Oh wow.
The last story is well worth the read. It might be long but I found it absolutely delightful! Thank you for sharing your childhood Squish gardening adventures!
Meanwhile, people are starving to death.
Ands What do you expect poor rural farmers who just have excess zucchini to do about that exactly? Mail them to Africa?
I was just talking to a friend today about gardening and she said “I’ll plant zucchini for this project.”
“Oh dear… what’s your damage control plan?”
“Oh,” she said, intuiting what I meant. “Eating the blossoms. Love stuffed blossoms. Pumpkin, squash, zucchini. It keeps the crop down, and you get lots of mileage out of them. You keep a mixed crop that way, too. Plus, people don’t always welcome gifts of zucchini, but they find gifts of blossoms exciting.”
This struck me as absolutely game-changing.
My problem is that I legitimately love zucchini. “Lizard,” you ask, “why is that a problem? Just eat the zucchini!” The problem is that in the middle of the growing season, there will be a point where I physically can not consume enough zucchini to keep up with what the plants are producing. It does not matter how much I chop, freeze, fry, bake, etc– there will always be a point where I have more zucchini than I have time in the day to do something with that zucchini.
But eventually it runs out. Like summer, it’s as intense as it is fleeting and come November I want for some zucchini fried with onions. By January, when I’m planning out the spring garden, there’s always that thought, that voice of hubris whispering in my ear… “maybe I should grow more zucchini?”
Children, it is a trap.
It’s getting on planting season so this is your annual reminder to ignore the siren song of zucchini.
Rise fans, what are your thoughts on Jr? Curious
Personally, I don’t like him at all. Feels like fans keep replacing him with the real Casey Jones. I think he should’ve just faded away from existence since his timeline didn’t exist anymore, and what happens if later down the line another Casey Jr is born? How would the timeline handle two of the same person at the same time? I mean it would be cool if there was a time travel-related antagonist wanting to kill “the anomaly” Miguel O’Hara-style to save their universe or smth and the turtles had to do their best to save their friend (Maybe that’s how they introduce Renet). I’d actually be really okay with that huh thoughts are changing in real time
Ooh.
1. I'll start with a petty one: I will forever contest that changing present Casey's nickname to Cass is disrespectful to someone who dramatically introduced herself by saying her friends call her Casey. I wanna be Casey's friend. I'm calling her Casey. I generally refer to future Casey as CJ, Junior, or Future Boy. This is a petty because we've definitely seen CJ get referred to as Casey more often than Casey but I will be petty about this.
2. Favorite headcanon I ever headcanoned is that CJ goes into midlife crisis mode whenever he's not on some type of mission, but he tried really hard to be a "normal" human anyway. Like he very suddenly skipped a few steps on Maslow's pyramid after being held back in step 1 all his life and jumpstarted self-actualization mode.
- In this reality, he and Splinter are terrible influences on each other, as they bounce crisises off one another.
- He can hold down a job much better than April, but will quit them on his own because they're not what he's looking for. He helps Draxum in the kitchen once. Once.
3. I look at Rise characters and all other iterations of TMNT and often think that the relationship between Casey Jr and future Leo is so nearly the relationship most OTHER Leonardo Hamatos have with their iteration of Splinter. That's cool, okay? We didn't really get that with Rise because the turtles don't respect Splinter as a sensei (at first) and the sentiment they have for him as a father is usually on a fence between desperate and exasperated.
Tangent: It is harsh that we started watching the show where Splinter is at his lowest despite being in a seemingly stable home because clearly the turtles were raised by someone who tried his best while living at his worst.
Anyway: the parallels I'm making up here between CJ and Leo and Other Leos and Splinters makes me think that future Leo was maybe just a bit like the less goofy Splinters we know and love, which is a little sad but shows a more stable state of mind amidst the chaos of his life.
Okay rant over, back under my rock I go
Persuasion is a particularly comforting read, because it's a book where good things happen, not in spite of the bad things or as consolation for the bad things, but often because of the bad things.
Anne loses her family home, and her family moves to a city she hates instead of staying in the familiar countryside like she wanted, but being forced outside her comfort zone is good for her. She's useful to her nephews, she strengthens her friendship with the Musgroves, she makes new friends with the Harvilles and Captain Benwick. It allows Captain Wentworth to come back into her life, and that seems like a bad thing at first, but it allows her to move past the regret of the past and into a new relationship.
Louisa's injury is a terrible turn of events, but it brings Louisa and Benwick together, and allows Anne to show her true worth in a way that makes Wentworth admit his love for her.
Even Anne's great regret, her refusal of Wentworth that led to eight years of misery, turns out to be a good thing. Wentworth's disappointment made him throw himself into his career, and his lack of a wife gave him freedom to go on voyages and into battles without worrying about how it would affect a family that relied on him. Anne's rejection--his first taste of failure--gave him enough maturity to keep the money that he made, and he came home a rich man who could well support a wife. Instead of starting out married life with stress and worry over uncertain funds, they are able to wed as people who are financially stable and secure in their love for each other.
It's a deeper, richer message than just saying that good things come to those who wait, or that someday you might get enough good things in life to make up for the bad stuff. It's saying that your suffering might be the necessary step to bringing about a life that's better than you could have hoped for. And that's very comforting.
happy birthday ya big nerd 🥳
I hope one day we talk about how similar Astrid and Toothless are, I can even say their character arcs in the first movie are kinda the same.
Two distrustful, proud beings who reject the idea of letting their guard down and showing weakness. They built up their walls and push anyone who tried to break through them.
The difference is that while Astrid had comunity and therefore a duty to protect her people, Toothless was independent and relied on no one but himself.
They are both rejectful at Hiccup at first, both tried to get rid of him and avoid every interaction because of their own avoidant nature and ego, always prioritizing their own independence and reputation, Astrid during dragon training, trying to protect her spot as the best of the class in order to become an official viking warrior and Toothless when Hiccup gave him his prosthetic tail and tried to get rid of him, trying to put an end to their temporal alliance to go back to being feared.
Yet it was Hiccup's audacity, insistence and worldview that ultimately softened them and let them be the children they really were all the time.
Both had to realize that there was more in life that being what they thought they had to be in order to survive.

Forgot that I made this.
the thing i when i say "i wish i could draw" i am not saying that i want to learn to draw. i'm saying that i wish i had the passion to learn it. i could absolutely become an artist if i wanted to. i could sit down and learn to draw right this second with pencil and paper or some free-to-use art program, but do i want to? do i have the drive to sit here drawing figures and practicing linework? if you love something you naturally find time for it--you write on the weekends, you scribble during your lunch break, you stay up late working on needlepoint or woodworking or whatever it is you love--but if you don't love it, if you're not passionate about it, it's not a hobby it's a Commitment. it takes like 80% more energy bc you're dedicating so much of your willpower just to starting. and that's exhausting. when i say "i wish i could draw" i really mean "i wish i was passionate about art in a way that's fun and not an obligation i put upon myself." i want what all the artists seem to have where they just like doing it and willingly dedicate so much time to it out of pure enjoyment. the stress is worth it because it's fun for them. i wish i had that. i wish i had something that was stressful and fun instead of just stressful.
I wish the 2012 Turtles got the chance to physically grow a few inches taller like the 2003 Turtles did in their last seasons. Especially if it was Donatello who got another growth spurt because I’d love for him to grow to be about Master Splinter's height (or taller).
In part because I could see Donatello feeling the least “like” his father, making him the “outlier” in his own family. So having him grow to be the most like Splinter physically after Splinter’s death would be like a double gut punch. Firstly, because it would be undeniable proof that he is in fact, Splinter’s son. Secondly, because now Donnie has to live with the fact that his own father never got to live long enough to see him achieve this milestone.
its about the sadness
it wasn't the extended cut of my dreams, but this really is a delightful little bit of animation. get wrecked buddy.

One of my favorite things about the original Star Wars trilogy is why Han joined the Rebellion. Look, Han and Leia is my favorite Star Wars couple, but Leia isn’t the reason Han joined the Rebellion. He joined because of Luke. Luke, who never stopped giving him shit. Luke, who was scared and lonely, but never stopped being good. Luke, who dove into every battle bravely, endearing him forever to Han.
Luke, who forced Han to look at himself on Yavin and realize maybe there was something greater to fight for than himself now. And he came back for Luke, to save the man who saved him.
And he never stopped saving him. He ran into the wintery grounds of Hoth, knowing he couldn’t get back to the Rebel base until morning, because he wouldn’t leave Luke behind.
It wasn’t Leia who brought Han to the Rebellion and to the fight for something bigger than himself. It was Luke, the kid who was scared, brave, and kind, and who forced Han to be better because Han found himself caring about that kid.
