Despite Naomi Wattsâs best Princess Dianaâchanneling effortsâwhich included visiting the late royal in her sleep, wearing her actual clothing, and obsessing over archival footageâthe Oscar nomineeâs biopic about âthe Peopleâs Princess,â Diana, does not seem to have been embraced by overseas critics. In fact, ahead of the filmâs U.K. release tomorrow, reviewers have taken to cattily tucking into the biopic as if it were sport. Below, a sampling of the reactions from the British press, which in all fairness to Watts, mostly take issue with the filmâs script rather than her performance.
âI hesitate to use the term âcar crash cinema.â But the awful truth is that, 16 years after that terrible day in 1997, [Diana] has died another awful death.â âThe Guardian

âThere are a number of lines you never, ever want to hear Diana, Princess of Wales say, and they include: âI love feeling your hand there,â and âYes, Iâve been a mad bitch.â Even when these lines are delivered by the fragrant Naomi Watts, doing her level best with a squirmingly embarrassing script, this film is still atrocious and intrusive.â âThe Times
