I just released the playtest for Gas Dog VAYLANT, a TTRPG of Diesel Mecha War Horror
Gas Dog VAYLANT is a tabletop roleplaying game that takes place in a world not quite like our own, beset by the Grand War - a great global military conflict that’s brought untold death and destruction to the world’s nations over the years, all while supernatural horrors and dark sorcery lurk in the Fog of war that creeps over the battlefields.
Players take on the roles of soldiers in a military company unit, working and traveling together throughout the war aboard a carrier: a massive land, water, or air transport, capable of carrying large amounts of personnel and equipment, chief among them the huge piloted combat vehicles known as gas dogs.
The company will travel between different war-torn regions in pursuit of the objectives of their assigned or self-directed operations; they may be frontline fighters, spies and partisans deep in enemy territory, quietly doing logistical support by creating and transporting supplies, and more besides.
But no matter what, they will have to contend with the war’s countless challenges, presented to them by another player, the Marshal: enemy forces, resource shortages, poor morale, bad intel, mental trauma, and unnatural horrors of the Fog are only some of what the company will face, requiring every bit of heroism, wit, and teamwork to overcome.
Gameplay-wise, players partake in a conversation, fluidly switching between zoomed-in scenes, zoomed-out montages, and the occasional expedition aboard or away from the carrier to another location.
The Marshal presents the soldiers with a situation, and they describe their actions in turn; This may involve action rolls and pools of six-sided dice (the soldiers using their special aspects, various skills, and resources like provisions and intel to improve their odds), with outcomes ranging from hard-won triumphs to terrifying disasters, along with unexpected twists that offer surprise to the whole table.
The game also makes use of tracks to mark the status of many things in the game world, their boxes marked and cleared by player action and events that unfold in the game world.
I can't even begin to explain how happy and excited I am to have brought this to this stage. How did I do that? I still don't know!
Anyway, if you're a fan of anime like Gundam and Royal Space Force and various Ghibli movies (and not for what people usually tend to cite Ghibli for!), TTRPGs like Beam Saber and Band of Blades and Armour Astir, video games like Foxhole and Iron Harvest, the Trench Crusade wargame, or the music of history/war metal bands like Sabaton and Civil War, you might get some real mileage out of this game!
