okay so. A little over a week ago I contacted James about being into DSMP. We've been friends for close to 4 years by now, I think? Like, shortly after Ragnarok came out. They were one of the first people to join my private friends server, and I've cherished them as a friend even if we didn't always have the same interests. Telling you all this because this is literally the only reason why I didn't immediately pull the "I'm a bitch and WILL make this a you problem because you were racist"-card.

Anyway, so like I said, a little over a week ago I made a DM group on discord with them and a different member of my server who is also into DSMP (lmk if you want their @ but they're not relevant to the rest of this story), because as the mod (and as a friend) I had gotten some comments about the fact that these two were (openly, unabashedly) into DSMP and how that was, like, you know. Bad. Because all those bitches are racist (specifically antiblack) and antisemitic, on top of the ableism, rape jokes, underage jokes, etc.

So, like, sure. Whatever. I'm not thrilled with how they handled it but because we've been friends for so long and because I'm stupid and expected better from someone who is. Literally white and a gentile. I was like, sure, okay, let's give them time "to think about it."

I still have the DSMP tag blocked btw and I rarely if ever unblock posts with blocked tags, which you can blame me for, but basically I assumed that the "thinking about things" also meant they would slow down with the posting and definitely not be uncritically posting about it, especially after I approached them about this. Like, idk, once again I assumed they were a better person than they are which is on me -- I thought maybe some of those blocked posts were perhaps also signal boosts abt not supporting those assholes anymore.

Fast forward to today, I dm'd them at 5:33pm with this:

As of writing this it's 10:37pm. I know they've seen my dms. I specifically sent it at a time when they were online, and I saw them typing, but nothing else happened so. lol. Prepare ur crytype notes app apology ig but it's a bit too late now :/

Literally I don't know how you're going to dig yourself out of this hole, James @gayarsonist. Frankly, I don't think you can.

James — 05/31/2021 [10:55 PM] for me sharing content was always about platforming the fanartists and writers who made interesting work and the fan community rather than the original content and its creators. but i do understand that contributes indirectly to supporting the content creators because they're the source of the content. i don't really want to stop supporting fan creators bc some of them are my friends but i need to be more responsible about what i do online and i haven't been. i guess if that means i have to go because i'm making people uncomfortable then i'll go and i'm very sorry i've caused that.

p2 — 05/31/2021 [10:59 PM] mcyt as a whole is just. a genre. ur allowed to be upset n not like specific creators for doing bad things, but mcyt is literally anyone who has ever played minecraft on youtube n thats a sprawling community of Very Many People, many of whom aren’t malicious bigots. its an extremely interwoven community so you just try to find the ppl who are doing good and ignore everyone else. a lot of creators on the dsmp have the only crime of being friends w dream, who in turn has done bad things i just think we disagree on the finer points on what is worth deplatforming, n i dont agree that occasionally playing among us w big creators that happens to include pewdiepie can be construed as “friends w nazis”. if u want me to leave the server bc our opinions are too incompatible thats ok.

James — 05/31/2021 [11:17 PM] i see. and i know that's not something i can fix even if i were to take everything down right now and issue a statement or something. i realize it's still an issue that i'm interested in any of this at all bc the people who haven't done anything particularly bad are still in the same community and some have connections to those who have. i should probably see myself out and say whatever people want to do (unfriend/unfollow, block, etc.) is fair bc i don't want to bother anyone further and i don't think that any course of action i take can fix this in a way that's going to satisfy anyone. i am sorry that i've made people so uncomfortable though.

UrbaneFigment — 05/31/2021 [11:23 PM] i don't think taking it down will help much considering you already posted about it so much, so taking it all down would seem more like an admission of guilt + trying to make it seem like it never happened. however i do believe that, especially considering how big of a following you have, making a statement will at least have some kind of impact. like, you're not stupid for feeling conflicted god knows ive had to let go of shit that was horribly problematic when i was still rly attached to it, but doomthinking(is. is that an english phrase) about how you can't please everyone and therefore it isn't really worth trying won't help imo.

James — 05/31/2021 [11:46 PM] yeah that's very fair. i shouldn't be doing that, i am sorry i did and it had to be pointed out to me, and i won't again. i can't justify or defend enjoying dsmp content and that's something i need to be more aware of and show that i understand as a bare minimum. i think i'm going to think about how i want to move forward with this and, however i do so, everyone can react in whatever way they feel like and i will not be offended or upset. in the meantime while i consider my behavior and what i'm going to do next i will stay out of the server and if anyone wants me blocked there or on tumblr that's fair. if you want to put me in a dni or anything that's fair. i won't make a fuss.
