I. The Awakening of Sopdet (Sirius)

Face the eastern horizon at dawn as the first light breaks.

The sky is turning silver, the darkest hours die,

As Sopdet rises brightly to claim the eastern sky.

The herald of the water, the star of golden grace,

Returns to bring her blessing to every holy place.

II. The Return of Ra

As the sun breaks the horizon, welcome the solar king and creator.

Awaken, Ra, in glory! Step forth from Nun’s embrace,

And let your golden teardrops restore the human race.

The serpent has been conquered, the bark of day is free,

To sail across the heavens in perfect majesty.

III. The Inundation of Hapi

Honoring the floodwaters that bring life back to the parched earth.

The heavy flood of Hapi is rushing down the Nile,

To make the fields of Egypt look up again and smile.

The bitter drought is over, the green begins to spread,

To fill the land with laughter, with barley, and with bread.

IV. The Rebirth of Osiris and the Crown of Horus

Celebrating the cosmic order and the victory of Ma'at.

Osiris is awakened, the king who conquered death,

The cosmos is renewed by his sweet and giving breath.

Young Horus takes the scepter, the double crown of might,

To banish all confusion and champion the right.

V. The Closing Blessing for the New Year

Pour a libation of cool water or wine onto the earth or into a sacred bowl.

The Great Year opens wide as the double doors unseal,

And all the gods assemble to bless the common weal.

May peace be in our dwellings and health within our frame,

A hymn to the ancient Egyptian Goddess Bastet, Goddess of feminine protection, the home, cats, and healing. She's often thought of as representing the gentler aspect of the fiery warrior Goddess Sekhmet. Written and translated into Middle Egyptian by AliStrnad, my friend and student Egyptologist, and phonetically reconstructed, composed, and performed by me, Siamun.
