30% voted for the Afd - a far-right party. An extremist party. A Nazi party, to call it what it is. 

And that’s 30 too many. That’s horrifying. It’d be horrifying anywhere and it feels especially so here - it feels like we are repeating history, a very very dark chapter of history. 

I probably don’t need to tell you why this is horrible news for our community, or really for anyone who has a heart or conscience. You can find the answer to that in history. 

30%. That’s a number where we can no longer shrug and say “there’ll always be a handful of bad people” or “it’s just a few uneducated people who are confused and don’t really know they’re voting for Nazis”. We learned it’s not just a “old conservative men” thing, either. The 16 to 30 year olds voted for them. 

It would be inappropriate to try and minimize the significance - and the damage - behind this number, and I do not want to do that. But I do want to throw another number out there: 70. 

If 30% voted for them, that also means 70% didn’t. And that means there’s hope. 

30 are too many - but the 70 are still more. 

This isn’t meant to mean that we can just ignore it. The opposite, actually: it means there’s still the chance to do something. It means the 70 can still stand up and be louder. 

The worst possible thing to do now would be to bury your head in the sand (figuratively) and let the 30 speak for everyone. Because they don’t.
