I Saw the Odyssey

Here's my thoughts.

It is a good movie. It kinda has to be though, right? It was directed by Nolan, its 3 hours long and is adapting a seminal ancient text. Thats a recipe for success. So yeah, the movie was good. It had some great characterisation, it had some really engaging fight scenes, they were able to make a lot of the mystical parts of the story really visually compelling (and upsetting) at times. It does a great job of walking the line of myth and legend.

But.

There's also a lot to be desired with this film. I am not truly convinced by Matt Damons performance. Everyone else was outshining him in the film and his character was telling us his feelings a lot rather than showing us. He had a great physicality for the character but I struggled to believe in him as Odysseus. Secondly, its so long. And unlike other movies that are of a comparable length, the momentum is constantly fluctuating. I actually looked at my watch 2 hours in, hoping we were near the end. Also, i cannot wait to watch this again in 3 sittings with subtitles on so I can actually hear everyone's names.

One thing I really did like in this retelling is that Nolan introduced some historical revision. He included the Sea People and their suspected role in the subsequent Bronze Age collapse. I thought it was a great inclusion. However, I did feel that some dialogue was very pointed as it did not seem to trust their audience. There is literally a line where they say something like "this is the collapse of our Age of Bronze." Yeah bud, I'm sure the ancient Greeks called it that too??

The movie was good because it had to be good.

Just watched Adam Conover (of Adam Ruins Everything) make such a solid point that I think we should spread far and wide. Yes, having AI write your emails is lazy, sure, but people love being lazy. We need to really emphasize that sending AI emails (or using AI responses on social media, or publishing AI flyers, or or or) is rude.
