I'm so damn tired...

“Uh…” he started, trying to think if anything was amiss. He doesn’t think he forgot anything. Nor did he really have anything planned for the time being. As far as he remembered, all he had lined up for a while was just… basic repair work? Omega was due for a checkup soon, but there wasn’t anything very special about that.

His face sank. What little energy was present faded. The one part of his life he didn’t want to talk about. He would happily tell her about anything else. Let her know that he was a bad person. She had to already know that by now. He was trying his best to make up for it now, but she knew the kinds of things he was capable of. Especially after what he’d done to Eggman.

He walked over to the table, quietly sitting down, he was quiet for a few moments.

“Have I told you… exactly how all of this happened to me? How I ended up looking like Shadow? Because… I’m not sure I have. Now, just… bear with me. This’ll answer your question, just… let me get there.”

He brought his hands up to the table. He gripped the edge a little. His fingers made a soft grating noise as he applied tension to the surface beneath them.

“I was… dying. For months. In fact… I did die. For… I don’t know, a few days? Two or three? Not super important how long I was out. But… Amy was the last person still coming to see me in the hospital. My skin was peeling off. Bones crumbling. Don’t know how I was alive. I think I was just… hoping you’d all come, just one more time. But you didn’t. Nobody else did. I don’t blame Charmy or Cream. They were kids then. They shouldn’t see what I was at that time. But after them… it was Team Dark and the Chaotix who stopped showing. Then Knuckles. Then Sonic. Then Tails. But she was always there. There until she couldn’t be.”

Syphon turned to face her, taking her other hand in his,

"Well, I figured that," she shot back with a small laugh. She took his hand and let him help her out of the car. "Are you getting me a dress?"

Once inside, her eyes lit up at the sight of all the gorgeous gowns and beautifully tailored suits. A shopkeeper greeted them, speaking cordially with Syphon before leading them into a private room where a beautiful red gown was displayed on a dress form in the middle of the room.

"This is for me?" She asked, leaning in to inspect the fabric. A flush of pink rose on her face as she gently touched the silky skirt. "This is so beautiful!! You really bought this for me?"

He rested his chin on her shoulder lightly, a sly grin on his face.

“I couldn’t exactly take you dancing at a resort without a fancy dress. And I couldn’t ask you to take one with because… well that would have ruined the surprise, of bringing you here, wouldn’t it?”

“Not getting out of work that easy, kid. Hang on to me if you have to. I can keep us both above water if need be.”

Truth be told, he’d really rather not use more of his powers today, but sapping enough heat from the water could make a small ice drift for them to rest on if that damn submarine didn’t get to them quickly. Probably wouldn’t take very much to freeze this water, if it was driving his partner to shock.

"Shit! ...S-shit. ..Okay. Okay, I'm good! I'm good. ...I wasn't scared or nuthin', y'know! And I ain't need you to come save me! I just-- I got caught by surprise is all. Don't look into it, got it?!" That was the closes to a 'thank you' that the doppelganger was going to receive. A few moments later that promised submarine finally arrives, ready to receive them. "About damn time!" Once the two were on board, Flex shakes out his wet fur. He hated getting wet. Just his luck.

The shouting of the fox kept him in the present. If it wasn’t for the water they’d been drenched in, maybe he could confirm if he’d actually cried remembering. So many people died. Why did he live? Why did he always live? His neighbors, his friends…

As the sub picked them up, and let them in, his attention would finally return to the fox,

“Hm? Oh, uh… no. Just… like I said. Very lucky. Always have been. Not always a good thing. Just… glad you didn’t bite it up there.”

He gently patted his partner on the shoulder,

As if sensing the presence of both of his parents, Venice’s eyes fluttered open with a yawn. Sleepy gold eyes looked around the room, while his tiny body squirmed about to stretch.

“If you want to. I don’t really mind either way. So long as the little man doesn’t object.”

He brought the child to the kitchen, and sat him in his big chair. Already, he was reaching his little arms around to grasp a toy to play with, or something to toss around, probably. Syphon would supply him with a small plush, much to the child’s delight. No words yet, but it had only been a few months yet. Venice had seemed perfectly healthy so far. A curious, and happy child if nothing else. Always trying to climb up to anything he couldn’t see, or to reach things he wasn’t supposed to have. Syphon supposed that being the son of two thieves might have something to do with that, though.

“What do you think, Venice? You want mom to cook today?”

A series of babbles from the child actually managed to wring a chuckle out of Syphon, who indulged in the baby’s energy and began to gently play with them.

“I spoke to him the other day. He called me when he got planet side. I offered to meet him for dinner some time soon.” She shrugged, her back turning to Syphon to hide the hurt on her face. It was true she missed her team she missed stealing, harassing knuckles and doctor egg man, and really just existed outside of being a mother.

Spaghetti was the meal of the day. It was easy and something she could pair with the wine she had ordered weeks ago, but with recovering from the c-section that had cut open her abdomen Syphon made sure she had healed enough before alcohol was even allowed near her.

“Pasta and wine is good.” He confirmed, placing the baby in his little booster chair,

“You know… you’re pretty much recovered now. I think… if you wanted, you should be able to get back to work soon. I… wouldn’t mind you getting out a bit more. Having a bit of fun. Could be good for you, not being stuck in here all day.”

He explained some of the small differences as they drove through town. A few same-looking shops swapping places, some names a little different. A few stores that never were or didn’t come to be. But familiar enough. Finally, the car would come to a rest, parking in front of a tailor’s shop, and Syphon would step out of the car, opening the door for Amy, and making a dramatic gesture as if to present the store in grand fashion.

Amy watched as the city started to pass by. The quaint little shops, the overall atmosphere, and just the fresh air made her feel more relaxed already. While the rest of the trip certainly felt like they were on vacation, arriving here made her feel like the vacation had officially begun.

She listened as Syphon explained the differences between this Crystal Lake and the one he'd come from. Her eyes darted from one landmark to the next. She was so amazed by how beautiful the town was that she found herself speechless.

They pulled to a stop in front of what looked to be a tailor's shop. Quirking a brow at Syphon, she allowed him to open the car door for her and help her out.

"This is the surprise?" She asked, very much confused.

Syphon turned to face her, taking her other hand in his,

Curious, though, and an explanation of his motivation. Under what circumstances had this happened? Starline fully intends to find out, but he has to return to base for that.

Starline isn't above disparaging alternate timelines of himself--if he truly had died, then it must have been because he'd failed to consider a contingency plan. He could have easily died in the Eggperial City, for instance...had he failed to realize the discrepancy in Surge and Kit's behavior.

He kicked his feet up, leaning back in his chair. A satisfied sigh left him, before his mood and face shifted. Colder, more detached.

A deep breath.

"Platypus."

He shouldn't have risen to that, but when you've been hearing the same tired old line since grade school...

Starline turns away with a huff, though keeps himself on guard for potential retaliation.

Though, that last statement makes him smile.

A short laugh escapes the hedgehog. It’s cruel. Mocking. Full of pity and disbelief. It says more words than the actual sentence does.

He kicked his feet up, leaning back in his chair. A satisfied sigh left him, before his mood and face shifted. Colder, more detached.

“I mean… with all due disrespect… what do you have? A bruised ego, a series of plans that, I’d hardly say were even foiled, just… straight-up backfired. And the crushed remains of adoration for someone who thought less of you than the rocks on the side of the road. I mean… what else you got? Certainly don’t have a nemesis to destroy. You think you occupy space in Sonic or Tails’ head when you’re not directly in front of them? Get real.”

...except for the slight twitch in his eyelid when the stranger mentions what Robotnik thought of him.

"You're correct!" Starline replies, holding out his hands to his sides. "I have lost many resources, and I'm fairly certain Sonic forgets anyone who isn't in his immediate line of sight. However...Do you honestly think I would be showing myself if I had nothing at all to my name? I'm still here, after all."
