___ one tiny rock rolled on his gloved palm and to the other, doing that for a few minutes as the first drops of rain of the night started falling. the night was calm and quiet -as quiet as that place could be anymore-, not many people were out and fortunately nothing big was happening for him to be doing something. maybe it was boring, but it was better than dealing with whatever was happening anymore. jason had given up on trying to understand how the world worked now. “i know you are there.” said as he turned his head to the side, letting the rock he was holding finally hit the ground. he had only been back for couple of years and spent not even seven months in gotham, but the ability to sense the bat and those trained by him, wasn’t lost. if it was dick, tim, or whoever else was part of it now - was the surprise.

___ the world wasn’t so normal since he could remember, much less for someone who was born and raised in gotham. and worse if the last years of one’s life were spent with batman himself. but the whole worlds-crashing-situation was beyond his understanding and probably, his patience. thankfully though, the universe wasn’t acting so bad and one of the only people that could make him feel welcome - like he belonged or fitted, walked down the street. the man he once was able to call a best friend. “if i try to find you, i fail. but if i don’t, you appear. funny how it works.” said once he was close enough to the other, a small smile teasing to form at the corner of his mouth.

   “ at least you still know the real brains of the operations, jay. ” she teases, greeting him with a soft smile. jason was still a delicate topic among much of the family. barbara had no desire to play into that, however. he was still jason and that was all barbara needed at the end of the day, “ glad to hear it. i don’t always get such good responses when i show up. ” she holds out a warm cup of coffee with a raised brow, “ i even brought a gift, on the house. so we have time to catch up. okay? ”

___ jason looked at the cup of coffee and extended out his arm to take it only a moment later. the only two people who he could have a real conversation with were roy and koriand’r and before that, talia. even though the last one he wasn’t so sure how honest it was, at the moment it felt right. none of the ‘batfamily’ could fit in that list so, it felt quiet weird now to be there with barbara while drinking a coffee. it felt intimate, like maybe, they could be friends after all. “good. because i wouldn’t pay for a coffee without dessert.” said jokingly. “well, i haven’t done anything too important since i left gotham months ago. i met roy harper and starfire, though. pretty sure you guys knew of that.”

Peter opens his mouth for a moment, a hand raising as if to explain a point before dropping back to his side. “This is just my voice.” He doesn’t cry in front of people often, much rather take to doing it in private instead. He ignores the fading sirens, sighing a little as he moves to plop down on the edge of the building, pulling out a phone to look at his police scanner. 

___ at the action, jason couldn’t help but laugh. an honest laugh. “don’t take it to heart. i was joking.” he laughed some more and then worked on getting his mouth mask off, feet carefully balancing his body on the edge of the building. “so, what happened down there?”

___ jason was still looking at the scene in front of him, while trying to understand whatever the boy in the... spider suit, was saying. not that he wasn’t paying attention, miraculously he was, but the other talked way too fast. and between the rain hitting his helmet, the fading sirens and whatever his brain was trying to put together, it was too much. “are you crying or is that just your voice?”

___ it had been only two years or less since he had decided to give a chance to the bats and robins again, since he took the jump of faith and put his walls down just so they wouldn’t be in a constant fight. and it wasn’t for anyone else but himself, because he didn’t want to be the one pointed at every time there was a problem. being the black sheep was something he got used to, not something he liked. but the only one he felt really comfortable with, was barbara. so, meeting with her didn’t sound like a bad idea. “leave it to the smart one of the pack to track me down.” said with a small and shy smile. “good to see you, barbie.”
