The irreparable damage shame does to young girls is an afterthought to a society built on the foundation of suffering. I was taught to sit like a lady, eat like a lady, speak like a lady. My bemused expression was a sign of fault, not my own individual quirk. I am a woman first, person later. I have sacrificed the least in comparison to my ancestors. They might as well have been slaves in their houses. They only had gold to their name, no education, no freedom. Just suffering for their family.
