We all talk about how we hate getting older, everything gets more complicated, we miss the simplicity of when we were young. One time I was complaining to my mom that my adult singing voice was crap. I said “I don’t understand. I remember being a little kid and people would compliment me on my singing voice! Now, I can’t hold a tone to save my life!” I remember being kind of annoyed by that, I’m not a singer or anything so it doesn’t really matter big time in my life or anything, but I just missed being able to sing in the car to a song I liked and not make everyone’s ears bleed. My mom explained that she thought she herd somewhere that “as people grow up their voices change: they get a wider range of vocals, but controlling them gets harder” or something like that. I don’t know, I’m not a musician, or some kind of scientist, but that really got me thinking: voices change and get more difficult to control as we get older; but the variety of things you can do with them gets larger. And that’s kind of how life in general is. As we get older we keep adding things and stories into our lives, just like the wider ranges of vocals we get, and then we might complain about the issues that brings. It makes it harder to sing, life seems harder to live, less simple, less easy. But what I think we often forget about is the good things that this complexity brings. For voices we gain a wider range, it’s harder to control yes, but once we take the time to learn control, our voices might be much better than when we were children. As we grow up everything gets more complicated, the whole world isn’t mom, Dad, and school anymore. It’s heartbreak, tragedies, and every single complicated thing inbetween. It’s the things we can’t ever figure out, and it’s the questions we’ll never get answers to. But with all this complication, we get more opportunities to do great things in our lives. It’s because we grew up enough to see all the complicated things life has to offer, that we can try to fix them, live in them, and even enjoy them. Even though we all hate growing up, I like to think of it just as I think of voice changes. Voices get more complicated, but if they never got complicated we would never be able to fully enjoy the beauty of high range voices like Brendan Urie, or Florence Welsh, or any of the other amazing, crazy, wonderful singers that are out in music. They all were able to overcome the challenge of voice control in order to be successful. And even if your like me, and you’re tone deaf as hell, we can all appreciate people with good voices, people who overcome struggle. And in that same way I hope we realize that we can appreciate the difficulties life throws at us as well. Life’s struggles may get harder as we get older; but it is because of that difficulty that it is all the more beautiful when you overcome them.
